From some dutch guildwars forums i learned that a lot of hardcore GW1 players that played at Gamescom did not like GW2.
WHy?
- The game played like an MMO and not like guildwars.
- The gameplay was different from the orriginal GW
- They felt the game was dumbed down.
How do the hardore GW players on this forum feel about GW2?
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Here is the thing about that. It is a different game. They told us beforehand and so there shouldn't have been any surprises. People have to look at this game with an open mind, whether you are a GW player or from another mmo. The people wanting a GW 1.5 have known that GW2 wasn't going to be like GW at all. Those folks (and I've seen those complaints on GW2Guru as well) are just whining for whining sake.
Also, GW is not going away, it will still be there.
My own opinion? I'm sad that a few features are not being carried over into the sequel but I also know that it is a completely different game. To me, it looks good from what I've seen but the proof is when I actually play it.
i play GW's actively. its not "dumbed down". no its been changed to allow for the difrences in playstyle.
but they should get over themselves, its more intuitive yes, but it is pretty hard to dumb down Gw's when it was already a very simple game. if anything the game is now more complex! easy to pick up =/= easy or dumbed down. it just means you can get into it easy (like Gw1) but it takes time to learn everything there is (unlike Gw1)
cryiong over gameplay diffrences is their choice, but why should it feel like GW1? should it really contunue to be an exact copy? if that is the case then they might as well have jsut made anouther expantion.
just because it plays like a MMO, does not mean that it does not still contain elements from GW1. it still makes yout think GW when you play, becausr its GW1 with a major facelift.
I'm a huge GW1 fan but honestly when I was playing GW1 I always wished it was more like an MMO in some ways and now it is. I think GW2 is pleasing more fans than letting them down.. because it feels in a lot of ways like it is taking GW1 to the next level. IMO GW1 was a preview of what was possible in the MMO world.
But it is a different game so it's not going to make everyone happy, but those who aren't can stick with Guild Wars 1. There has been no announcement to my knowledge that they plan on shutting down GW1 anytime soon. Two Guild Wars games is better than 1!
Seeing as how none of us (or very very few) have had hands on time, all you see is what's played for you. Until you play the game you do not know jack about it. What they report as being features may sound dumbed down to some but it may just play out better than it sounds. So I'd tell them to get off their soap boxes and give it a try.
I am not a GW hardcore player anymore but I used to be (well, hardcore and hardcore, I played 4 hours a day for several years) and I thinks GW2 will be great.
Actually is the biggest issue I heard people talk about jumping. Some people have protested about that and wanted the older movement system. Not me for certain.
The whole thing is making a hen out of a feather, there will always be some unhappy people when you make a new game, there are some people unhappy about Starcraft 2 also.
The majority of the GW players I know are looking forward to the game (well everyone is actually but one guy I know are a bit worried).
GW2 expands and improves on what I loved about GW1.
Massive world is a plus. Larger pvp is a huge plus. More dynamic combat, hell yeah. And more races that will perform differently in combat making PvP even more diverse...Can't really lose man.
Don't get me wrong, I loved GW1. I played through the CB and OB with LotD--we managed to hold the 3rd place in the ladder for awhile in GvG. However when the game launched, I bounced because I didn't want to grind for the skills. Although, a year or so latter I did resub with a PvP Account and made a Mo/W healer called Mo Heals Mo Problems. Good times all around. So the only thing I'm eager to hear about is the skill acquisition/trait acquisition in GW2. In one of the videos...my apologies for being to lazy to dig for the link...it was mentioned in passing that there will be questions you can do to get your traits.
did you just say resub :O
This is really funny.
I mean think about it, did A-Net lie about anything that they said in all those articles and interviews? I mean, if you watch the demo, everything they said would be in the demo is there. I don't know how someone can read all the stuff, see the player skill videos, watch all three trailers, including the manifesto video, and still conclude that the game is going to play like guild wars 1. If they came out thinking that it would be a more polished version of GW1, then they didn't pay attention at all, and its nobody's fault but theirs. A-Net was very forthcoming about its changes, even at the point where they first announced that they were going to start working on GW2 all those years ago. They stated all of their ideas there, and most of those ideas still appear to exist in GW2 now.
Were they hoping that A-Net didn't mean what they said?
"Everyone dies. It is how one lives that matters."

"P.S. MAKE NO DEALS WITH THE WOLF." -Durzo Blint-
"But, there is one they fear.
In their tongue, he is Dovahkiin -- Dragonborn!" -Game of the Century-
Pretty much. Some of them want GW2 just to be a graphical (and some other upgraded features like movement) upgrade over GW and that's it. Even after everyone knew it was going to be an entirely different game, they still whine about it.
Reminds me of referees in sports, players will complain about the call for minutes after the play has been done. The ref isn't going to change the call when 5 minutes of the game from that point has already passed.
Guild Wars 2 is Guild Wars 2 not Guild Wars 1.
I do remember a long discussion over this on a GW forum over 3 years ago, both Strain and O'brien posted there. They established the basics already then and very few people were negative. So if you get surprised now you just have not paid attention to what is happening and you could actually have protested before it was far too late.
I am willing to pay a month salary to be in the beta from the start BTW.
As far as we know they are not closing to doors to GW are they?So all the "hardcore fans" can stay there and play it so what is to be mad about.Me personally I am glad GW2 is going to be more MMO like I will play it longer than I did the 1st one.
the real qustiosn is how long will those doors stay open?
I've been playing GW 1 since the begining and it was actually my first MMO. They have very nice graphics and story line but it didn't feel like a true MMO. The only time you see other players were when you're in town. Anywhere else are instanced, and you do feel like you are playing a single player game most of the time.
I'm glad that GW 2 is going to be open world which is what a MMO game supposed to be anyway. Since I've played GW 1, I have faith in GW 2 based on my experience in GW 1. It's gonna be better but we'll have to wait and see.
So in conclusion...I don't know what those "hard core" GW 1 players are complaining about, it shouldn't be like GW 1, if that's the case then why bother making a GW 2? For me, if they did make it like GW 1 then I won't be playing it.
Haha. Good catch mate. Bad habit I guess. I should have said, "I purchased the PvP package." haha. I associated buying the $20 box with reactivating a standard MMO account.
Im by no means "hardcore", but when I saw the 1hr trailer for guild wars 2, wouldn't anyone feel the "epic-ness" :P?
Well a lot of people never gave guild wars a try because it was too instanced, guild wars 2 is advertised as a MMO, so it is suppose to be played like an MMO, nothing wrong there, just a matter of taste, and I personally dun mind either. Just treat human players as NPC :P lol
They did say the demo was dumb down for gamcon so that could be one of the reason. The art style looks very unique, UI is clean and neat, it got a more 'unique' feel to the class systems with no specific healer role, which could be great or disaster
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
For as long as enough players are playing them I guess. The way they made the servers make it a lot easier to to turn down capacity and running costs of the game. But if 99% of the player quit on GW2 release day I guess they would be close down pretty fast. If many players still want to play they will stay open.
I have already accepted the thought that this is not a direct sequel to GW1 but something different. In this spirit, I will be measuring this game like it was a whole different game. A completely new game.

didn't we have this talk 3 days ago ? here!
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/288806/Anet-seems-to-be-losing-the-respect-of-the-GW1-fans-but-gaining-the-respect-of-MMORPG-fans.html
I laughed when I read the comment about GW2 being dumbed down from GW1.
I played GW1 for about 2 years and that game was ridiculously easy. Very little decision went into my gameplay. Only real decision on what template to play for certain situations. From what I read, that is pretty much going to be the same thing with GW2. Your build will be determined by your weapon choices and races (not your secondary class) but like Guild wars 1 I am sure you can have a gillion different builds and save the templates.
Now when I played GW1 I had constant questions
1. Why can't I jump?
2. Why does doing PVE feel so barren and alone
3. Ok got to level 20, did all the content in the game, wtf else is there to do.
GW2 to me looks to add the same fun gameplay GW1 had (fun, fast, didn't require a lot of time) and adding more depth into the game. (persistent world, diffrerent races, more stuff to do) It was the guild wars I wanted. When they first announced this game, I knew this is what I wanted from Guild Wars. I loved the world of Tyria, and absolutely had a blast playing GW1, but the game felt it was missing a lot of stuff. GW2 looks to build on what I loved.
If they were seriously let down for those reasons, they aren't very bright. The devs always said they wanted to to make into a real mmo world. Since GW isn't seen as a real MMO to hardcore or casual players, obviously it's gonna be different. And honestly, did they think that the demo was gonna be at the normal difficulty? I mean how much dumber can you get? Games are almost always made easier so people can get into it a bit more. Imagine trying to play any MMO as a high level char when you just started playing. You'd be reading all the skills longer than you'd actually play the game. Sounds like fakers to me.
After a certain amount of time that a game as been released, I think it just sort of becomes dumb downed. Guides told you how to do anything and everything in GW1. That makes it so much easier. There are generally alpha skills used by most classes in alpha builds.
Sure, you could use something different then those, but you were just making you and your team worse off.
Anyways. I think the title should be changed to, a couple dutch players on some forum want to keep playing GW1, since it sure doesn't seem like every GW1 player feels let down.
1. i never missed jumping in GW1, i dont think they really needed to ass it to GW2. jumping is not nessiary in a RPG IMHO.
2. not sure which way you mean, if you mean no one is around to play with. i know what you mean, people dont like to replay GWs PVE like i do, so they are always deserted and new players dont get to enjot it at all.
3. PVP :P, Titles, collect stuff.....difrent profs,
there is alot of colecting that can be done, from wepons, to pets and skills (skills are the easiest of course)
Eeehh play GW1 then you fags...GW2 is a new game, they made GW2 so it would bring a bigger audience and many wanted this features GW2 have and GW1 did not have them.
The only people who can say it's dumbed down are the people who don't see the potential for complexity. As a PvPer who recognizes how people play and what is generally demanded or needed in a match, I can tell you that there is a potential for an IMMENSE amount of complexity. From in-combat weapon or attunement (for eles) swapping to profession skill combos, the potential is there to do something great and the people that can't see that were probably just hoping for GW1.5.
Some people haven't gotten used to the fact that it's going to be a totally different game but as one GW1 player who played GW2 said; "It will grow on you ...... the more you stop hating it for not being GW1 the more you'll like it" or something to that effect.
This is not a game.
