I see that I'm not the only one who yawned at this news, and just about broke their eyelids eyerolling as hard as i almost did.
However, the difference is I'm a big enough jerk to actually post and say what's completely obvious because i'm BORED.

Thank you for posting what I was thinking. Now I can just say I AGREE. rofl
I really did not like CO.
Unfortunately, those of us whom are avid fans of the NeverWinter franchise have to continue to be haunted by this TERRIBLE company. They're the "Uwe Boll" of the MMORPG community (even worse than the korean WoW clone developers), because they SOMEHOW keep getting their hands on wonderful fan loved franchises (coughStarTrekcough).

I didn't either and I still get comics in the mail on a regular basis. I absolutely hate Cryptic's cut and paste engine. I really hope that they aren't trying to use the same engine for Neverwinter Nights. I hate that they got their grubby little hands on that IP.
City of Heroes was cool, but I think it was a fluke for these guys.
You must be a carpenter because you hit the nail on the head, though I will say had the split not happened Emmert would have gladly run COH into the ground. Champions online is the most clunky unattractive mmo I've ever played and it is a shame that Emmert still thinks this game is better than COH or that the engine they use is right for mmo's. Luckily with Going Rogue launching I resubbed to COH to try my hand at some of the new stuff so that will be filling my superhero niche until DCU launches, who am I kidding though even if I hadn't resubbed to COH I still wouldn't be playing this abomination.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I still play this game and love it. I like it better than CoX.

Those of you who are coming back to check out the free play check out Serpents Lantern. Grab some people your level and put the difficulty above normal for a bit of a challenge then grab the quest.
You can get the quest at the pad where the plane is in Mill City. From there go to UNTIL HQ which is SOUTH of the Champions HQ. Can't miss it and it is a lot of fun with a group of people. Bring your heal pots.

I for one like the changes to CO, also i enjoy STO as well
Have No Fear Cohas is here!!!
Didn't they just do something like this not too long ago, I remember reading something like that? Maybe it was just a well early announcment for this thing.
Anyway. I too can't stand this game. I did the trial run and the only thing I really liked about it was the character creater. What can I say, it was fun to mess around with. But even playing with it 2 or 3 times got REALLY boring, like everything else in the game.
Using the game's anniversary as an excuse for a free week huh? Desperite for new players I suppose. And WHY THE HELL does a game need to be $15 p2p AND have a freakin ITEM MALL? If that's not over kill and one of the best ways to make people hate your game I don't know what is. But I suppose they had to do something for the lack of paying players.

Obvious failure is obvious.
Even the lifetimers won't bother with either one of their games anymore. You can't get any more lackluster than Cryptic. As for City of Heroes. Without NcSoft hovering behind their backs, they would have probably run that game into the ground too. That game is much better off now since they have left. No more constant nerfs anymore. They took that habit with them to Champions Online.
Yep, it was a free welcome back weekend a couple of months ago. I loaded up the game thinking it would be teaming with people playing for free that weekend only to find that the top tier PvP matches were still empty. The game was promptly uninstalled again shortly after.
Even if they reactivated my account free for a month i wouldn't give it the time of day again.
This prove most of you dont know about what your talking about if you think the item store in CO give you avg. It doesnt, All its there for so you can get ahold of the model unlocks or out fit pieces. Without working getting them in the game thru perks when you kill certain ammount of of guys of a type.
You do not have to buy items off the C store you can get them thru the game, its for people who dont wanna do that. The only thing with the C-store is when you buy it its account wide. While getting it in the game is f unlocked for that character. Some perk unlocks are account wide.
But nothing esle in the C-store give you any avg in the game, you get a power repicking whenever a powerup date happen, you can get one off the C-store if you dont wanna wait for a free power repick, or hit lv 40.
I like CO alot better then I ever did COX, I cant even play COX any more after playing CO. as I like CO freedom of picking powers to your liking as well as its combat system. After years of playing COX, its combat system got old so did it choice of forcing you to a powerset.
In Co I can make my character to any way I want, Running around with dual pistols with thugs , as well as the assault franklinstien weapon was old as well.
The only person that might not go back to it is you, but to say all lifetimers will not is cant of draft. I sure some will not but those who spent that much money of lifetime of course will play off and on. They not gonna sit there and let there 200 dollar fly away and not play. I sure some of you would.
If i spent 200 dollars on life time I will play til the servers blow up in a raging fire. And get my money worth.
"Hey that's a cool new car you have, how many miles to the gallon do you get?"
"None, it doesn't work!"
"So why are you sitting in it parked in your driveway?"
"I'm getting my money's worth"
The C-Store only has account services and fluff, so you are not required to buy anything from it. There is nothing you could buy in the store that would give anyone more power. Heck, there's nothing in there to even make the leveling go faster. It's just costumes.

Now you're just making stuff up... there are tons of lifetimers posting for both games constantly. Of course there is room for improvement in both, but really... to say that the lifers don't bother is a bit of an overstatement.
in the meantime, speak for yourself, don't speak for me.

I'm a CO lifer and I still love the game. Stop lumping people in the same crowd who don't all share the same opinions.

what week is it free to play? starting Wed right? I can't wait to try it out to be honest.
Yep. The site says September 1 at 10 AM Pacific.
I'm another lifer and I think Champions Online is a lot of fun. I still subscribe to City of Heroes too, but I really like the additions in Champions.
For whatever reason, City of Heroes tries to deliver a superhero game without comic book atmosphere. Champions Online went in the other direction, fitting it as much color and as many jokes as they could. Maybe that bothers people who prefer their superheroes deadly serious.
I enjoy the "half-Incredibles" art style, but I can see how not everybody would. Love the style or hate it, you do have to have your graphics settings turned up for the game to look good. Without all of the effects running, capes look flat, the characters don't have muscle tone, buildings lose details and so on. Judging the game with graphics at lower settings isn't fair.
It's also a lot more fun to play using a game controller than mouse and keyboard. If you have a wired Xbox 360 controller (not with a charging wire, but with a permanently-attached USB cable), the game's interface will display the appropriate button icons.
And as others have said, the item shop offers the same services (like extra costume slots or character renames) and cosmetic items (costume parts) that many other $15-per-month games offer in their item shops. It doesn't sell gameplay-changers like heals or rapid XP.
@Pinebaron
you are just the person i want to ask this. "do you think DC will take over?" I loved CoH but quit when it died down. Im hoping DC will pull all those Champion and CoH players all to one game again and hopefully we can endulge in another well populated Super Hero esk MMO.
Next up, STO.
Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst!
@Joshua69
Everybody on one game? It would be cool, though I have been happy to see the investment NCsoft made in CoH, partly as a result of competition. I hope we'll continue to see multiple games trying to one-up each other.
I don't think DC will take away CoH's core audience, who like the way it plays, the six years' worth of content upgrades and the fact that it can run well on older hardware.
The Paragon team is very creative, too... I thought their crafting system was a good solution for the superhero genre, yet they didn't let it intefere in the enjoyment of casual players who choose to ignore it. And now Matt Miller is working on an endgame system. I expect them to keep things interesting, and hopefully they can somehow upgrade their character models eventually.
DC may do more harm to Champions. Champions is more of an action game, especially when played with a controller. It allows strong characters to pick up vehicles and (briefly) use them as blunt instruments or projectiles. DC is taking the use of physics in combat even further, so that may attract action gamers.
Given DC's great license, content created by big-name comics art and writing talent, and the fact that they have a console version, I think they'll have a lot of interest at launch.
One possible downside for DC will be system requirements. If it requires a fairly recent video card to run well, people are more likely to blame the game than their hardware. That'll right itself over time, but it could harm the launch. (I think Conan and Champions had similar problems at their launches.)
In other words: Please play me, I'm dying q.q

I'm just curious how do you see the COH atmosphere as not being comic book while Champions is.
for the record I see both of them as having a campy comic book atmosphere so I was surprised to see someone who thought that the atmosphere in COH seemed serious, maybe it's because I grew up reading marvel comics which I thought sometimes addressedmore serious subjects than DC which once I was older realized that many of the stories there were as serious if not more while both Champions and COH strike me more along thelines of Sunday Funnies comics than actual comic books.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
