I played over 5 years ago and for some reason I'm currently reinstalling it to play. Is this a bad idea? Will the servers be dead and I find no similar level players to group with? Or will I fall in love with Final Fantasy XI!?!

As someone who is currently playing I can assure that the server I am on (Leviathan) is most certainly NOT dead. There's even opportunities for lower levels to find parties (FFXI's job system and level sync feature help encourage this).
Will you fall in love with it? Well, that kinda depends on you. FFXI is not for everyone. There's no PvP (except for the arena-style Ballista and Brenner, neither of which people do any more, really). It is not interested in making life easy for you (although it's easier than it used to be). The interface can be described as "quirky"; at least they let you do a custom map of the keyboard now. You might want a USB gamepad; the mouse interface is hopeless. On the other hand, if you want amazing storytelling with great cut scenes, gorgeous art design (even if the graphics technology is a little dated), amazing environmental sounds and soundtrack music, an actual player-driven economy in which player crafting matters, and a feeling that you've actually accomplished something when you achieve an objective, FFXI delivers. Personally, I've never found anything that comes close.

Beta? Are you perhaps thinking of FFXIV? FFXI has been out for eight years. It's a little past the Beta stage. You can download the game from GameStop, Direct2Drive or Steam. It's $10 on any of them.

The servers are good. You'll be fine. It's all good.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.
