Unfortunately, Sony has such an awful track record that you can't help but feel Planetside 2 will totally screw up in every way imaginable, and then in a few new ways that are not yet imaginable.
Still, the game was unique and in my opinion is one of the greatest online games ever made (before mechs were added). Even if we only have a slim chance of getting an improved version of the previous game, it's better than no chance at all.
And as a final comment, I can't believe the original poster of this thread voted for a World War 2 theme. My gawd, how many WW2 titles (both films and gaming) have satured our lives the last decade? I'd say that if I see one more WW2 title I'd shoot myself, but then everyone knows your life is better spent shooting at some Nazis if you really want to throw your life away. Let's stay away from WW2, as we've probably all shot over a billion M1 Garand rounds by now and I'm already getting the shakes and sweats just thinking about having to go back on the virtual front lines.

I could not agree with you more. I doubt that SOE will win any new customer by Sequeling Planetside. I am sure that the fans of the original game will give it a shot ( pun intended) but they are not New customers.
The only title that SOE has in the works that will bring in new Customers is the DC Universe. Since that has not gone beta yet , nor has a street date and since their are those who can not forgive them for what they did to Star Wars Galaxies (like myself) I have my doubts that SOE can restore their reputation .

I suspect if this is really being developed it will be a PS3 title first and maybe a PC title after that.
I thought planetside was fun for a few months and it would be nice to see someone try bringing this type of game to the mmo genre. It really needs more than what the original planetside offers though to warrent a subscription fee in my opinion.
I totally can't wait to buy XP potions and booster packs for in-game items! just kidding :P I'm certainly interested in a PlanetSide 2, but like many others, a bit hesitant given the company involved. Cautious optimism I suppose.

While I wouldn't relate shit-filled donuts to a video game I don't ingest, I got a chuckle out of it.
I don't think there's anything wrong with being "cautiously optimistic" about a decent IP. If SOE weren't involved I would probably go right past cautious to full on "eagerly anticipating".
That said, while I make jokes, I worry that SOE will try a subscription + TCG + item mall for the game which, for me, would be a major turn off. I'm also concerned that the same management who oversaw other changes I disagreed with are still running the show. That is where my "caution" comes from when I discuss optimism about this game.

exactly.
and with the recent video and details of dust 514 and APB over the horizon, planetside 2 needs to show up big to grab peoples attention outside the vet PS community; Sans BFRS.
Amazing news, easily my overall favourite mass mmo.
The time period has got to stay futuristic, its the only way they can keep the same number of options open in an fps environment. I could see them mixing up the factions and what they focus on.
Also faction specific weapons and vehicles are great, they just need to make it easier to obtain the other side's equipment in order to reduce the amount of balance issues that may or may not exist (3 seater prowler anyone?). Greater base diversity, and more reasons for outdoor combat wouldn't hurt either.
And for the love of god no clunky and annoying BFRs!
When Mech's were added, the game became a lot worse. I just can only hope that they don't do microtransitions. I am truly excited for this game but i agree what people have said though if they keep it similiar to the previous one with just a lot more content and features it would be great. I would love to have variations of Gals or more/better tactical features for outfits/groups.
I think that this game is a amazing FPS that should be PC only. I know it would be great to have PS3 or Xbox 360 but by being PC only it would have larger server populations and they can focus more on game development rather than trying to rush the game so they have time to convert their game to PS3/Xbox 360

Although I was very excited to learn of a PlanetSide 2....I have to say that I can't really wallow in anticipation....
There are just so very many ways that it can be screwed up...and the history of the game doesn't inspire confidence....
I love PlanetSide...I followed the game from the first article I ever saw about it in PC Gamer when it was in production , maybe 2-3 years before the game even hit closed beta...Of course, I had kept myself registered and thankfully got into closed beta, then open, then played every day of my life for 2 years...And have played it a few months on and a few months off ever since....
Originally, the population locks were, if memory serves, 450 per empire...and the maps were much larger...But the REAL game killer was The Bending-Over....
The point I'm trying to make here is that in order to please many of us original PS players, they'd have to be very careful with design...and I just can't trust SOE to do that....
Basically, I'd want a Pre-Bending game, same empires, same gameplay, but with modern graphics and physics and all....But I'd BET that the game won't support well over 1,000 onscreen at once, and I'd also bet that the unique stuff like cross-country travel and roving, continent wide warfare will be sacrificed....So many complained about the time it took to get to a battle that I can't imagine that the distance factor and logistics will be a part of any new game, but that huge scale and the planning and sacrifice it entails is a large part of what drew me to the game...Having to decipher the map then arrange a way to the battle adds a lot of immersion for me...
But, sadly, I really don't expect any new PlanetSide to really resemble the old one in anything but name...and I think most old players would react badly to that, myself included.
However....With unrealistic optimism, I have fantastic hopes that somehow justice and karma will prevail and they really can and will produce a worthy succesor for PlanetSide.....
Personally, i hope its going to be fun. Im not looking for the exact same Planetside with an updated graphics engine. Im looking for a sequel, with both old and new features. Naturally i wish for the games success, but thats something beyond me.
I was cleaning my closet and found the original game with poster... I was about to toss it... but I put it back where it was. Can't throw something with so many good memories out.
I know its being made its under name Planetside Next but its not sure if they use that one, but I've already seen some wow-influence there as well. I'd almost bet they make announcement soon, World of Planetside is coming! Well-funded wow-clone gives you 100k+ subs quaranteed, like that isnt enough for them. Thats what I believe they're doign.
Hater of hater of World of Tank. Latest wargame from wargaming.net.
Its amazing to hear that they're finally producing another PlanetSide, and no matter what they do to it, I'm confident that most of us will find it enjoyable. That said, I also believe that there are plenty of ways to turn this game's phenominal potential, into nothing, and if anyone could do that, it'd be sony, so crossing my fingers to hope that they dont't trash the game to hard.

Got this email also, really hope they do a nice job with it I would love to see some epic battles happen.

Soo much negativity...
It can't hurt for them to try can it?
If they're leaving Planetside 1 alone then I'm all for an attempted sequel no matter who's making it.
If they want to try something really awesome, they could have a time-crossing shooter.
Have 2 zones per time period, spanning from the the industrial era, to WW2, to current day, to future tech.
The SOE hate is silly.

planetside 2 would be cool if they get rid of the super soldiers, maybe add cert packages as well as other ways to customize your character.
What is the other title they are expanding?
