I'm using a cheap logitech gamepad. Mouse is still a bit laggy for me but the gamepad seems to be pretty smooth and I don't 'feel' any lag from the UI while navigating the menus. But I crashed about 15 minutes ago and have encountered the lobby error so I haven't been able to get back in.
Mouse is very laggy still but i just don't use it. The reason i loved ffxi controls is i didn't need to use a mouse and i don't plan on it in this game either just the keyboard works great and I wasn't getting much lag on the UI using just the keyboard.

ty for the info about the gamepad. It sounds like it was meant to be played with a gamepad.

I've ditched the laggy mouse and the game meshes quite well with the xbox pc controller and my wired logitech dualshock-type controller.
I used both when I played FFXI because of the annoying software mouse and I have to say that the controller works/ed like a dream. Now I just need to find my rechargeable batteries....silly xbox controller using AA batts.
Game looks pretty enough, and character creation is much more robust than FFXI (not that it would take much). I'm still sticking with my CE pre-order.

I actually got a key and was able to get in and play with my 360 controller. I just need to figure out how to set it up most effectively, I was hoping they would have a default setting.
I also tinkered around with the mouse it was really laggy in the patcher but once I got into the game it worked like every other mmo. I noticed no lag then.
EDIT: 360 controller worked perfectly

awesome! I'm glad to hear some people are having a better time with the mouse than others.
I'm sure you found it, but in case others are looking, there is a gamepad configuration tool in the ffxivconfig.exe in the programs folder that helps get your pad up and running properly.
I'm happy that the 360 controller works beautifully!

I am new, but it feels laggy.
I'm new to beta myself and it's laggy for me too. I only got to play for a bit before it crashed and can't get back in now.
That happened to me, as well.
Lobby server error...
aynone getting past login server error?
lobby is broken still
As for UI lag
The mouse is still slow, but the menus are a little faster.
Since I didnt get a key and had my 360 controller ready for PC use:
anybody playing with a controller? if so hows the gameplay?
