Trion Worlds has revealed that the budget to date for its inaugural title, Rift: Planes of Telara, is already hovering around the fifty-million dollar mark. According to a statement made to Develop-Online.net, Trion's CEO Lars Buttler says that spending this type of money indicates just how much Trion wants to get into the MMO business.
Trion CEO Lars Buttler told Develop the game’s exorbitant budget - parly due to the engineering of Trion's own development platform - signals how serious the company is...
“Rift: Planes of Telara is already very ambitious because it is over $50 million in development,” he said.

Cool story, but after epic failure of Warhammer Online - ''south of 100m usd'' budget - money doesnt mean anything.
Money can mean everything actually. If they run out of it, they have to release too early, or not at all, if it's a worse case type of scenario.

They're going to take their time with this and not rush it. Anyone who believes this will be rushed can go back to their welfare epics.

Talent, dedication, imagination, experience -- these are the things that matter, not the bankroll. A big budget just means the company has put itself a lot more at risk, and the MMO market is risky enough as it is. Quality isn't measured in dollars, Mr. Buttler. Better make sure your game has the right people behind the desks or it will crash and burn along with your $50 million.
Well the budget helps, even if the people are the most talented crew in the world, if they run out of money while developing it, it can die off quick. Or not even get released.
I am impressed. Rift looks quite good so far, so I am surely trying it out. Maybe a bit too many cool MMOs now, lol. But as luck is, maybe in the end all will suck, who can say, teh.

I like how they didn't go for the too-cartoony style. As far as I've seen then.

They had/have a business strategy of "accumulating" some of the best people in the business. If they managed with that strategy, then you have dough plus talent.
Lets face it, this game is going to launch to a very competitive field: LotRO F2P, WoW Cataclysm, FFXIV, and possibly Guild Wars 2. The reality is, not all of these are going to succeed, and you have to think that at least one is going to flat-out fail.
WoW and LoRO already have their bugs worked out, and FFXIV and GW2 are from fairly proven shops so you can expect polished products.
I wish them luck, but this game's chances are very slim just based on their competition.
I'm sorry buddy, but money is what makes the World spin. You can't get anywhere without money. The budget for the development of a game is of extreme importance as it influences every aspect of development. Stop kidding yourself and open your eyes.
Hardly affects it at all, you throw a load of money at the wrong people you'll lose that money. THATS how the world works, it's how business works. Efficiency is key a talented team with a reasonable budget can achieve more than a mediocre team with a large budget. Without the talent it's just a plain bad investment. Dimping more money doesn't solve problems it worsens them.
I'm not saying Trions team is bad or mediocre but money alone means jack. OFC if you have a highly talented team with a lot of experience and a drive to push to new heights a provide them with a large budge some amazing things can be achieved but quality developers is whats important. As long as they have a reasonable budget then they can trump high budgeted fools any time.
and SW:ToR... just sayin... u know.
WoW and Lotro don't actually have their bugs worked out really. FFXIV isn't much of competition as it's a very separate game with different players (I believe FFXIV doesn't have PvP, am I correct?).
Guild Wars 2 will be quite the competition I'm sure but the separate release dates make a bit of a difference. To my belief, Guild Wars 2 may be coming out before Rift so the players that don't like GW2 or like to think 2 MMORPGs for the price of one for monthly payment will possibly stream into Rift.
Cataclysm is hardly something to be afraid about, Cataclysm goes against so much of the lore that you can tell the Devs just made up something to fit in the new races and put classes in different races. So you can tell the RPers are out and since the content is so easy the hardcore players are probably finding a new game as well. That just leaves the 10 year-olds and they may leave because their friends are going to some other game.
Their chances aren't really slim as their mechanics are looking great and the overall idea of the game is something completely different. While Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Cataclysm and FFXIV, their stories have all been done before.
The cake is still a lie.
