First Play Experience

I can say it in one word: confusion. Well, two words. Utter Confusion.

There is a lot of stuff in character creation you don't know what it does and what it means. Nameday, Guardian. Also the different stats and the numbers below that.

Once I got into the game, I'm not sure what to do. I got a quest outside the city, but hell I don't even know how to get there. I have no idea where to even start killing.

I understand why people say a controller is better. It is a bitch to move and look around. You have to use the keyboard to move and use the mouse to look around while you move.

Also, anyone else that wants to keep trying to jump? lol

Sounds like this is a game you have to RTFM... I sort of respect that after having to play so many braindead games.

I wonder if they have a PDF manual around here somewhere.  Didn't find one when I searched the client installation directory.

After a bit of searching, I did find that apparently a leaked alpha manual is out and about.  A more recent bit of info would be nice, though.

Yea me and my cousin pretty much felt the same way when starting the game we didnt know what anything was and i had to figure out how to attack those things on the boat in the tutorial for the Boat Town.  Also everyone in the town speaks pirate so if you skim through the text you usually have no idea what the hell they are saying, although I think this is mainly due to their text system being really bad.

Basically, npc dialog should pop up in a box or a new window not in the chat window, and also chat should appear above peoples heads or something, because the chat window doesnt seem to work well especially when its merged between PC and NPC talking.

Forums have a manual section with loads of information.

Yea, I was quite confused as well for some time. I spent a while trying to find the zepher gate =.=".

I thought it was a bit lame that for major npc's, the mouths moved but there is no audio to go with it, just text dialogue. Seems like wasted animations unless they add in voice dialogue, which I doubt they will do.

Using the keyboard to move..? On a PC game..? I can see why you're so shocked. It's never been done before.

Do you guys remember your first day playing using the typical WoW-type UI and your first day in Azeroth negotiating around a major city, not knowing where anything is?

That's what you're experiencing here.  It's new and different.  That can be a great thing if you give it a chance.  Also, just try to relax and read what the NPCs say.  This game has great NPC dialogue and the NPCs really add to the flavor.

Ah the memories. Sounds like my first day in EQ beta when I was just dropped into Neriak and ending up dying when hitting the "a" key while targetting a guard.

At least it got me outside to the forest!

    Good times, no hand holding!

Pretty much my sentiments exactly. More so on the fact that its *gasp* Keyboard to move AND mouse to turn!? My gods! Insanity!

So you use your left hand to move and your right hand to look?

You don't play PC games, ever, do you?

I'd like to add that, while this is quite funny, I used the L+R mouse buttons to move quite frequently in EQ and WoW

All this can be said in one word   BETA .  This is a time for people to find the problems with the game so they can be fixed before release, not to teach you how to play and give you a good time.  People who do not have the brainpower to try and figure things out for themselves a bit should not even be in the beta.   They should just wait till release so they can hold hands with someone who knows what they are doing.

Because adding in features to help you enjoy your gameplay experience is a bad idea. Did you father give you the car keys and say "Go out and learn how to drive."? If he did, you probably wouldn't be posting today. Having a in-game tutorial wouldn't be a issue if it followed the typical UI setup that almost all MMO's use today. However, it's like telling a student to do Geometry when all he's been exposed to is Algebra.

If I remember correctly, ffxi was pretty similar in the just dropping you into the world.

I got in the first time last night and I can tell you right now what your problem is. You aren't reading the dialog that are given to you. I finished the intro and started the first quest while kind of speed reading/glancing at the dialog and I had no idea what the hell I was suppose to be doing. Then I went back and looked at the chat log and actually read everything and I knew exactly where to go and what to do. For the next 4 hours I made sure I always read the dialog and I've had no problems knowing what I was supposed to be doing or where to go.

If you're on a quest you can also open up your Journal and it will tell you exactly what you're supposed to do. Also there are several oppertunities to read tutorial information on the initial quest. I highly suggest you go through and read all the options.

When I clicked on the first Aetheryte it gave me the opportunity to read the introductory tome all about physical level and classes and levequests etc.

It explains just about everything.  This obviously took me a few minutes and dollop of patience, but there it all was!

If you're mashing on the confirm button, you might miss this opportunity.

Wow, eq1, eq2, lotro, vanguard all use left+right mouse buttons to move.  I think daoc and aoc did as well but I didnt play either very long so memory fades.  Its pretty much an industry standard.

The fact is that new testers are not allowed to feedback or bug the game so your post makes zero sense.

However, these games all also offered W,A,S,D - bar EQ until later expansions. The fact that the OP is so suprised at a keyboard/mouse system like this is weird considering every shooter to ever be something on the PC has operated this way.

You know, I've been in maybe 20-40 MMORPG beta tests in my lifetime, and I have to say that I stopped giving this argument about 6 betas in.  Because I saw for myself that, like it or not, the client you're playing 6 weeks prior to release is about 98.5% the client you're going to be playing at release, and the extra 1.5% doesn't change a whole lot.

But you never know, maybe Square-Enix's processes are different than the other 20-40 studios I beta tested for.

Anywho, the way I hear it, teh wierd thing about FF XIV's interface versus other MMORPGs is that the mouselag is so bad (since it's a software mouse) that trying to scroll with your right hand is too awkward.  You end up wanting to use a keyboard or gamepad not just for movement but also to scroll the camera.

Actually thier post makes a lot of sense. Believing you are being given free gameplay without having to participate in thier testing is what makes zero sense. Whether they want to hear from you, and what your opinions is irrelivant, you are providing them with the data they need to make corrections prior to launch. This is in fact a BETA, not a trial period on a live game. If you haven't noticed, the game launcher itself is labeled BETA. Please do not be arrogant in believing that your personal opinion is required before you can be conciderd a tester. If you are in the Open Beta Test right now, then you are a Beta Tester in a Beta Test.

(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

I wasted 20 min of my life trying this.

It plays crap for PC controls.

Also in the 20 min that i played i found more bugs then in a mmo by some random 13 yr old.

Good try, maybe it's better with a PS3 controller.

  • segynsegyn Member Posts: 234

I don't understand the problems everyone is having with the controls i love them. I use wasd to move and use ijkl to move my camera and never touch the mouse navigating the ui with the arrow keys.

Yes it lacks a tutorial of like the type wow, lotro and the likes have but I'm glad i love learning things on my own it is what makes this game so fun. You just have to go out and explore and no exlamation points over npc's head is a very welcomed thing in my opinion. I have played about 10 hours since the open beta started i can't stop the story is awesome.

I have seen very few bugs personally so don't know all hte bugs someone said they were seeing. And it really isn't that hard to do combat you target what you want to kill and hit F to go in active mode or just click 1 on the keyboard and you will start attacking.

I guess everyone just wants to be spoonfed everything. I don't this is why I have ordered the game after my OB experience. The first mmo i have been immersed in a long long time.

Ahh, the virtue of youth always comes with the thought that life has always been this way...

B-thong is so very right. W A S D is the standard in PC gaming, along with the mouse for camera movement. Point, click, move was an added feature for multi-tasking. Most early MMOs never had the point click feature until later, if I am recalling correctly, because everyone was accustomed to FPS style controls (except for those pesky Adventure Gamer holdouts).Obviously the first person is a tween/teen and just a babe in the gaming world woods. I guess Tool Tips are still needed. ;)

  • svannsvann Member RarePosts: 2,230

My problem with using wasd is that I am used to being able to move and attack at the same time using 1-10 to attack and mouse (left+right click, not point click) to move.  Is there a way to do the same thing using this different type of ui?  How do I easily move and attack at the same time?

edit: hmm thinking maybe numpad works.  Ill try that next time im in.
