Open beta impressions!
ok so after rigourous fighting with patchers and torrents and flogging around finding where things were and putting them where they belong and practically haveing to ddos attack the beta key site to make it give me a key, ive gotten into the beta and played around with it.
playing on my laptop, as my desktop died last year, with 2 years left to be in use before is would have been retired, o the nerve of that thing. anyway laptop is vista 64 bit 4 gigs 800 mhz ddr2, 3 ghz e8400 intel core 2 duo, dual nvidia 8800 gtx mobile cards in sli (hopefully they add sly support to ff 14 so far no diff in single sli or dedicated physix modes)
mouse lag, had none, not sure what people are complaining about here, ive had some chopping of frame rate with high textures around alot of people, but even then the mouse moved. only time the mouse was non responsive was when i turned everything up and the resolution up higher, this caused like 1 frame per 5 seconds, like locking the pc up, and then the mouse was non responsive, ctrl alt delete force quit, reset htings via config, everything runs peachy again.
combat definitely not slow compared to other mmos, in fact its as fast at level 1 as wow is at max level, although you start at level 1 with 1 ability, get another at 2, and then every even level after that, my marauder got trunk splitter at 2, its an axe uppercut to the groin for 1k tp, which you generate faster then the 10 second reuse on it!
i did notice after a while of not seeing leves update, that you need to go to a wierd stone thing in the leve area and activate them! which is neat since you can scout and make sure you can indeed do the leve before trying (like all spawns camped ect) since the leves are 30 minute timed once you begin and failure would deny you reward, unlike some other games where you can just chain fail and not be admonished in the least!
no jumping? honestly the only reason i even noticed is that spacebar activates the chat on default key setup. the ui is different from the wow clone genre, took all of 10 minutes to get used to.
folks, the game runs, it runs smooth, SE has their shit together on this one, if you like a good pve game with flashy specials and an epic feel as you play (i wont spoil the first fight you get into, but dam even for a level 1 new fresh roll char, epic battle!) hehe
Comments
Just FYI leves spawn the mobs for you and they tagged yours (or your groups), so you never have to worry about you guildless being camped.
otherwise good write up.
I have to say its an awsome mmo way better than EQ2 this will keep me entertained till I get my x58 upgrades and till Everqest Next comes out.
Dizzam, you're making me regret I didn't get my key evne more now. On the other hand, you've rekindled some excitement after hearing about these issues.
Dead wrong man. This game is crap for anyone not in denial. Lets start from the beginning with my experience. First the key was a huge problem with the website crashing. Then the download took about 10-12 hours with that launcher which also timed out a few times. The install was rediculously long. The character creation was just ok with alot of the stuff not explained well.
At this point I was pissed but felt better after seeing the in game video and graphics which were nice. Then I got angry again when I got thrown into the game with no information or tutorials on anything. The stats, combat, leveling, questing, are never even explained upon starting the game. The combat was just bad. The first 3 wolves I had to fight started with the NPCs not even helping and the wolves walking right up to us and not attacking us. I had 3 abilities: 1 shadow dart ability (simple nuke), and 2 aoes with the same damage, MP cost, etc. except different damage types. Yes, I had 2 aoes that did the same thing. Which technically weren't even aoes cause they just hit 1 guy it seemed. The shadow dart worked fine except that whenever I use a spell the bar disappears then reappears when I use another spell. The AOE however is bugged. I use it and it says choose target even though I have a target locked and I have to click on it again to get it to work.
Talking to NPCs was slow and took forever to gather quests which werent marked on the NPCs so it took awhile. The map was crap and I have to figure out how to use it cause the controls are bad. i, j ,k , and l control the movement on the map. spacebar instead of enter to talk. etc. I eventually figured it out and it took me like 10 minutes to get to the town I needed to get to. Started the quest and started killing these mushroom monsters when the game crashed which was the 3rd time in the short time I played.
That ended my journey. I dont care if it is beta because its open beta and should be way more polished. A huge was of time.
most of your problems with the game were just because you didn't know the controls... that isn't worth complaining about.
"Dead wrong man."
Not dead wrong. Call me a fanboy, but most of these critiques strike me as being a tad unjustified.
"This game is crap for anyone not in denial. Lets start from the beginning with my experience. First the key was a huge problem with the website crashing. Then the download took about 10-12 hours with that launcher which also timed out a few times. The install was rediculously long."
Man, developers everywhere are screwed if players care more about their servers working reliably during stress tests (when servers are expected to fail) and how long the game takes to install than they do about how the game plays... but moving on, you do have some points about that:
"The character creation was just ok with alot of the stuff not explained well. Then I got angry again when I got thrown into the game with no information or tutorials on anything. The stats, combat, leveling, questing, are never even explained upon starting the game."
I presume the retail game will include a manual that will explain all this. Apparently the beta forums are your manual right now, but you're not exactly lead to them.
"The combat was just bad. The first 3 wolves I had to fight started with the NPCs not even helping and the wolves walking right up to us and not attacking us."
That isn't representive of combat. The first three wolves are the combat tutorial, they're there to show you how to do basic attacks. If the NPCs killed your targets, or if your targets killed you, you'd never have learned. What you're suggesting would have broke the combat tutorial. However, it would have been cool if maybe the NPCs were fighting off their own wolves at the time, just so they're not standing there looking useless.
"I had 3 abilities: 1 shadow dart ability (simple nuke), and 2 aoes with the same damage, MP cost, etc. except different damage types. Yes, I had 2 aoes that did the same thing. Which technically weren't even aoes cause they just hit 1 guy it seemed."
Offhand, I'm going to guess the two AOEs had different elements. Final Fantasy's element system is an important part of it - basically, some mobs are more vulnerable to different elemental attacks, and this may also be a big factor in combination attacks. So they didn't do the same thing, not be a long shot.
"Talking to NPCs was slow and took forever to gather quests which werent marked on the NPCs so it took awhile."
Of course, being at the start of a stress test is going to slow everytihng down, including talking to NPCs...
"The map was crap and I have to figure out how to use it cause the controls are bad. i, j ,k , and l control the movement on the map. spacebar instead of enter to talk. etc. I eventually figured it out and it took me like 10 minutes to get to the town I needed to get to."
You got used to it in 10 minutes, so that's not bad, just different.
"Started the quest and started killing these mushroom monsters when the game crashed which was the 3rd time in the short time I played."
Crashes aren't great. Of course, it's hard to say whether that's the game or if something else is going on like a system incompatiblity or background process.
I personally hate playing with a gamepad. as you end up having to manually input all commands to your buttons. i have a saitek cyborg gamepad. i have a high end pc. and the Ui response is slow, trying to figure out which button does what is a lesson in frustration. There seems to be a bug with the Ambient occlusion, but playing with a keyboard and mouse is almost out of the question considering the mouse lag is atrocious, this is because they chose to use a software mouse cursor, rather than use a hardware cursor, so my mouse movement response is like wading through molasses even despite having a pretty high end rig. there is some obvious issue with gamepads not doing what they are suposed to do when in game, as I noticed buttons dont do what they are suposed to do as well as being a bit unresponsive, but i think this is due to the slow UI they have coded. I won't be getting this game when it is released as there is obvious issues that need to be resolved, though I may get it , if it improves with some patches, so I figure i will let people muck through the issues, so later I dont have to worry about it. It looks good, some elements are nice, but its obvious this game was meant for a console not a PC so there are obvious port issues that are notorious with console/pc coded games. But I will have to wait and see by the sidelines to see if things improve.
so far I am not impressed. But only time will tell.
3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.
the aoe is kinda short ranged if the mobs aren't real close the aoe isn't going to hit.
I'm thining this is a troll post. Nearly everything in here spells insane and ludicrous. Being upset about server instability during stress tests and being mad about small issues like character creation during a beta is funny to me.
@panzini, The majority of your complaints stem from something that is an opinion, for instance you like games closer to wow that hold your hand with the quest markers and where to go is just handed to you, nothing wrong with that I enjoy it once in a while as well. However this game just like the previous SE mmo is not going to hand you much, you will need learn things a little more than the average mmo these days, I like this for the fact that it makes the community ask each other questions and get to know one another plus most play on one main character with one name(for the most part) you get to know each other, like if this or that person should be invited or not, if you dont like the game find something that suits your style, I consider the way that SE sets up thier mmo's is to make people talk to each other and not just tab out to thotbott or something similar to find the answer or place you need to go, they put you in a world that alot of people find interesting and enjoyable the game is set up with not alot of explaining for a reason, the tutorial is on the SE site so those that read it will possibly help those that didnt and connections will be made in game creating a community, it at least panned out this way in ffxi for me and almost all I know that played it, ffxi was not imo the best game ever but it had the best community I ever had the pleasure of playing with and i'm looking foward to this game because of that, the rest can be patched in if there is really something wrong that is not just a dislike of game design or not knowing how to set your pc to the proper settings.
btw it took me 3 hrs to download the client the first 20 minutes it stayed at 0 then steadily increased to my max speed 1.2 mbps, this is without opening ports, doing torrents or anything, so if I can do it the problem most likely is with something else
Core i5 13600KF, BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard
This is whats ruining the game for me. The UI has a delay which makes things like target selecting a huge pain.
to correct a few very flawed and wrong misconceptions that have sprung up in my post.
the ui doesnt lag, your pc lags until you set the game to settings that work with your hardware, as many people have already stated, graphics drivers and oddball setups have yet to be fully optomized and you have to actually self tune your shit (go figure a not released yet game requires you to fiddle with settings for smooth gameplay)
the bit ive fiddled with a caster, the aoe has a button that pops up in the middle of the screen, its green, it toggles area damage on and off in case you wanna use the spell and not piss off adds i suppose.
if you want to just troll the game without playing or setting it up right, then make a troll thread, thanks, bye.
As far as my impressions go, I'm perfectly fine with the game as long as I can reassign keys and assign new keys to various menu items.
As a matter of fact, if I could just change the functions associated with "Enter" to "E," and assign "I" to inventory, "J" to journal and "C" to character screen, I'd be pretty much set.
Otherwise, I'm actually enjoying the game, the software mouse is a bit annoying but I haven't ran into any game stopping issues with it. Overall the game runs pretty smooth on my outdated video card (9800 GT).
I also have no problems with the UI responsivness. I don't use the mouse though just my keyboard. use wasd to move jklI to move my camera use home to bring up menu and arrowkeys to navigate the menus. It is a welcomed set up to me as i can now sit back comfortable with my keybaord in my lap and not have to sit uncomfortable just to use the mouse. My computer is set up in front of my couch in the living room.
With this set up i can lay back with my keyboard and play it is very nice.
As far as a tutorial goes those of you thinking there will be another one in release are more than likely wrong ffxi never got a real tutorial so i don't expect this game to. But if you talk to the people that give guildleves they have tutorial guild leves and instructions you can read. When you get to your first crystal it also has a tome that you can read for some knowledge.
Over all i find the game very fun and love the fact that there are no question marks over quest giver heads helps me get more immersed in the game. This game will have a great community just like ffxi does. Because anyone who can't accept something a little bit different will shy away from this game.
I have not had any crashes or lag and i don't have a high end system not a crapy one by any means but it isn't high end. I play with shadows and everything on and the graphics set to high. I'm having fun in the game that is all that matters to me .
Guess the only reason i'm posting is to tell people don't go off these threads saying the game sucks when they lasted in game 15 minutes Try it out for yourself or you will never truly know if you like the game or not.
This game will not be for everyone. A lot of people won't like it, because it is to differnt from wow, lotro and the likes But for those who want a pve game that is diferent than the normal themepark mmo this game might be for you.
i didnt find a need for a tutorial i mean the opening strater city tutorial is kinda fun the basic is learning how to fight the rest is pretty simple i mean simple enough to have an idea how to interact where to go wat to fight haha :X the rest is like any other mmo learn as u go
i have noticed a key binding setting in game, just havent fiddled with it yet to see what it can do, i like to learn the native default ui before i mess around with things, that way i can figure out what works best for me and go from there. (sometimes the default is default for a reason, and sometimes its just assbackwards dumb!)
My impression after my first real day of playing.
I prefer grinding to questing but there are so many damn people playing that it is nearly impossible to find anything that isnt already dead Not a complaint, glad so many people are enjoying the game.
The mouse works fine on my mid range PC. Dont know exactly what my graphics are set at, but the visuals are stunning!
Good amount of challenge. Not too much hand holding. Quest NPCs arent marked, although objectives are on the map. Plenty of things that can easily kill a whole group in the newbie areas.
Overall having a great time playing, and that's what its all about.
I will be pre-ordering CE when I get paid.
awesome you sound like someone who plays like I do. Love to hear others who are enjoying the game as much as I am. The only thing i have had trouble with is fishing can't figure it out lol. I get to water the icon pops up so i select fish than it tells me i can't fish there lol.
I was able to cast once but than it told me i had no bait on my line so i went to inventory to try and use the bait and i had no option to put it on my pole. I will figure it out though or find someone who is fishing in game and ask them. May make a new friend that way .
either way i'm having a lot of fun in game too. And yes trying to grind up some mobs is tough with so many people running around. I wanna level a second job a bit but hard to find mobs to grind on to do it.
The option to change certain keybinds in there but I don't think that it works because I couldn't get it to change anything. Besides that, the option is still missing a way to assign keys to menu items like "I"nventory, "J"ournal, "C"haracter, etc.
As far as I'm aware, the only real way to change keybinds is to use a gamepad, which I have but I prefer to play this with a keyboard + mouse as I have no issues with the software mouse.
so far i am still enjoying the game, will give it a solid 7 right now
i love the art style, the graphic and the design of the city, feel / look better than i expected
combat is not slow at all, seriously i thought it would be slow like FFX!, turn out glad i am wrong
and the classes system is fun, u can mix and match pretty much everything u like, but we will see how it affect the endgame.
Harvesting is time consuming, but i am addicted to fishing...damn
Anyway, now the UI IS HORRIBLE, after 2 days of gameplay i still hate it!
managing skills is a pain in the ass thanks to the UI, and the map is quite laggy for me!
mouse lag is a problem for me, kindda force me to play with the keyboard only
If SE doesn't require securecode or all kind of weird credit card policy/regulation, i would say i will definitely give it a try before SWTOR,GW2..
Whenever I see someone talking about hand-holding, I have to wonder...
Not that I see it as being much of a problem, but I don't see how this game holds anyone's hands less than any other. Every levequest I've had so far tells me exactly where to go, and even marks it on the map. This game even goes so far as to tell me which mob I have to kill. If I get a quest to kill 3x Fungi, then I can't just go and kill one of the Fungi I come across, I have to kill the one that is specifically marked for me. How that can be considered NOT to be hand-holding is beyond me.
On top of that, the themepark ratio of this game is very high. The paths to levequest goals are very tight and reminds me a lot of the way AoC ran on rails. So many invisible walls. When you have to look at the minimap to see if you can go somewhere, as opposed to simply looking at the environment, there is a problem.
Don't get me wrong. I'm still playing this game, despite my criticisms of it. It's an absolutely beautiful game, and has a lot going for it. But, right now, I see certain intentional parts of game design that are simply deal-breakers for me. I like the overall game enough to try to get past them, but I have doubts that I will.
Finally got to play the game for a couple of hours last night when i got home from work, everything turned up to high or highest with 4xaa and running on 1360x768 and i experianced no problems with UI lag or anything at all.
The only time i actually came across anything that was a bit annoying was the first guild leve "my very first adventure" activated the quest and when i went to kill the mobs the game crashed which was fine but when i logged back in the quest had gone and i was unable to pick it back up.
Apart from that everything else seems fine from the little ive seen so far.
I just guess alot of ppl will never be happy with this game as everything isnt handed to them on a plate advising them to go to person A to get this quest to kill X amount of mobs then the said Npc will tell you where to go next. I say fair play to SE for alteast making it challenging and different and something that you actually have to use ur brain in.
Your right the guildleves do hold your hand. But after you do your guildleves for the day which are limited. Do they tell you where to go to get some quests or where to go or what to do next. NOPE. Now the zones some of them are very very railed zones the forest starting area is totally not an open area where you can go anywhere you have to follow set paths. But if you start in limsa limonsa or how ever you spell that the zone is quite different and much more wide open. And a lot more free to roam.
