For a game that is no longer on the top of the hype list, its popularity is soaring.

If you check the popularity charts, which I did cause i wanted an easy link to FF14 forums, you will see that FF14s popularity greatly contrasts with its hype score. Thoughts?

it's just because of Open beta and it's nearing launch.. nothing more really.

People thought this would be the holy grail of mmo's, and forgot SE makes its games towards a specific audience. They forgot, or they chose to ignore...

"popularity" is based on the number of posts

and SE made the whole OB system as complicated as was possible and still get people in

therefore, lots of people looking for help on the forums here

Popularity is soaring? Nah, people are just attracted to train wrecks. If by the OP's standards, this game is "popular" now, just wait until shortly after it releases and the fallout from people who bought the game based on the assurances of FF apologists starts hitting the net. It will really be "popular" then.

    FF is the sleeper MMO.

It has great numbers, a loyal fanbase and evidently good gameplay. I'm starting to think that FF11/14 fans are a different breed of MMO gamer.

    • They don't flood the forums of other MMOs to say how their game is better

    • They seem much less excitable than other MMO gamers

    • They play and enjoy a heavily group-centric game but rarely seem compelled to post about how soloing is the bane of gaming

They seem to spend their MMO time playing their game rather than ranting about it or ranting about another person's choice of game. Maybe a FF sub comes with a monthly dose of Zoloft or maybe the game is just plain amazing and they're fine with just playing an amazing game without feeling they have to sell others on why it's amazing.

Whatever the case, it seems like the FF11/14 crowd is huge, the game is successful and it completely flies under the radar of most MMO sites and MMO gamer circles.

I don't play it but I'm pretty damn fascinated by it.

I dunno what's the big hype for that game.  This is a niche game, you need to be a fan of FF to like this game.  If you never played it before, chances are you wont like it.  Personnally i cannot stand FF combat mechanic.

Thank you kind sir. I think playing FF11 trained alot of people in the art of community. Although I am not going to lie we all slip up and lose our cool sometime (anyone see that thread hehe cough cough) but I too think FF11/14 players are a different breed.

Honestly ask anyone whose played FF11, if they have though about going back to FF11 or have indeed done it on numerous occasions and they will say "yes". A good part of the reason will be their love for the community and the way that that game creates fond memories and friendships.

Charts here don't really mean anything or represent popularity.  Look at WoW which has been knocked off the charts constantly, yet is by far the most popular, successful, etc. MMO out there.

You know, I'm more curious to see how well XI fares against XIV. With so many similarities between the two it almost seems like SE is cannibalizing their own community. Although, XI might remain populated by those without the comps or PS3's to play XIV.

Wonder if they'll have a 2 in 1 sub option for both games as well.

No PvP and not end game centric.

SE have realised that soft features ruin game in the long run. Until I read the mechanics of this I wasn't going to bother now I am looking forward to it as well as a number of friends from an old AC guild.... We can try it for a laugh.

They have a deal where FFXI players can sub to FFXIV and their FFXI sub is reduced to 7$ a month.  It basically works out to where both games subs are 19.99$/month and they get an in game item and a unique name in the format of:

    FFXIName FFXIServer

It is the only way that chars can share a last name like a family.  Pretty cool.  I have contemplated starting up my sub again to do this.

"Open" beta just launched, every game gets a massive boost of interest at that time.  I'm finally downloading the game after all the hoops and different crashed pages you have to go through to get the key.  Bit of advice: Follow each link in a new window/tab, since it will only actually load 1 out of 20 tries.  If you open it in the same window it you're back to square 1.

Now my other complaint is the downloader.  It uses 100% of your upload bandwidth which everyone should know kills your connection, and limits your download as well.  I'm still getting around 250k down with 100k up so I guess I should just be grateful I'm not in the 20k down crowd.

Still Optomisitic, the graphics look great from the benchmark.  I just hope the kb/mouse controls are tolerable.  That would be a deal breaker.

i played my first character with keyboard and mouse, 2nd one with 360 controller, controller is by far the better choice, u can tell the game was designed to be played that way, K/M combo will make u wanna kill yourself, graphics are excellent and i havent experienced any gameplay lag, gathering is fun, but the killer is the wall u hit around lvl 8-10 and left with nothing to do but "grind", would be nice if there were more than 3 mobs in each zone

  • alkrmralkrmr Member UncommonPosts: 236

also the hype chart is just a total of hits of this forum, most are from people trying to figure out how to download, install get keys, the rest is from people complaining about how bad the beta is
