Does the Star Wars mythology still excite you?

I know when I first came into contact with Star Wars I was amazed.

It was the second movie I saw first, Empire Strikes Back that was run on TV, and I was absolutely engrossed by the great story that was being told. It had story, drama, all kinds of great action, scifi that impressed... in short, I was hooked.

And that feeling became only more when I saw the other 2 movies, the Star Wars universe had something magical, some X factor that could incite a sense of wonder.

Then came the other 3 movies and even if they had lots more action, impressing scenes and more overall drama (the betrayal and fall of the jedi, the rise of the sith), they didn't touch me as much as the first three had back then. And even the first three, when rewatching them, only stirred a mild nostalgia in me, not the overwhelming sense of wonder I felt the first time I saw them. They feel even dated, although Empire Strikes back is still the best of them and a great scifi movie in itself.

But it is now more a Blade Runner, Aliens and The Matrix (only the 1st) that I favor as my scifi classics, more than a Star Wars.

Bottomline is, I don't have that same excitement for Star Wars anymore that I had, to the point that if Bioware wasn't involved I'd probably even skip this MMO title. And even then, knowing that Bioware was involved, it took seeing the first video and reading up on the setting and what Bioware devs had to tell about SW:TOR that got me interested in it.

I loved Mass Effect 1 & 2, and I sense something of Bioware's touch with the ME series also in SW:TOR. If anybody can make Star Wars in SW:TOR a deep, rich and compelling story, then it's the Bioware guys; I think they're even better capable of accomplishing it than a George Lucas himself. So I wait and see, and in the meantime I just keep following the news.

For me, the prequels ruined the Star Wars mythology and feel. George Lucas changed far too much since he worked on episode 4-6 and his episodes 1-3 weren't very good. While I like certain parts or certain characters(Darth Maul) basically the dialog didn't flow right, the pacing was off, Anakin Skywalker was incorrectly written and cast. Based on the prequels, Darth Vader is now some whiny kid who didn't get his way and misses his Mommy instead of being that cold, sadistic villain we grew up thinking was the best villain ever.

Because of that, Star Wars is tainted to me. However, SWTOR, thankfully takes place thousands of years before all of that and hopefully the situation can be rectified via better writing, directing and gameplay.

I don't think the mythology ever excited me but I loved the movies.

You have to remember, that when Star Wars came out NOTHING around was like it.

    It really was a phenomenom.

I saw it 3 times which was unheard of in my family.

What I loved was the story and the characters.

I concider myself a "general" StarWars fan. For me, knowing that there are books upon books after stories of random happenings and continuations of the StarWars Universe, kind of ruins it for me. It makes me feel like, "sure, I may enjoy StarWars but I really don't know it".

I completely agree. George Lucas gutted this franchise. Its bad enough when IPs you love get handed over to morons for a bad sequel, think Highlander 2, but for the actual creator to screw things up so badly is mind boggling.

Empire Strikes back was also  the first of the movies I saw and the only one I saw on the big screen. I was more of a Trekkie than a Star Wars fan which is why i think I enjoyed the prequel movies more than the hard core SW fans did or do.  I would like to say I enjoyed KOTOR but even with the last patch I still cannot stop the error message crashes and cannot deal with them and enjoy the game. However, other SW games I did and do enjoy and look forward to SWTOR.  My thing is, I tend to burn myself out on things over time but again SW isnt somethin I have overendulged in over the years so I still find the game, books and movies enjoyable.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

It is absolutely still exciting to me.  One of the best stories ever told.  Of course it is old so it doens't have that same mysticisim that it had, but I still love it.  And the 3 prequels were fantastic IMO.  Could of been better, but I'm just glad they turned out the way they did.  It could of been a disaster, in some people's mind's it was, but I strongly disagree.

Sure. Tbh, my SW love was more on 2nd glance. Back when the First Trilogy was new, I liked Star Trek and Galactica more. (Hey, I was a kid, ok! ^^) Actually my real interest began with the New Trilogy. Even tho I didn't like everything, it was my start to delve into the depths of the EU.

So yes, it doesn't change. Why should it. The only gripe is that they are so focussed on the past, and the future is quite dark. It seems to me often that all the brave actions of the Old Trilogy heroes were in vain, given how the stories continued, which I find unfortunate.

Considering i get all excited when the original trilogy happens to be on cable when i'm flipping around, i'd say yes.

Rofl, well, I said it that way because, lately the actor has been doing movies that actually don't suck. He's getting better the more he does and grows. But yeah, nice analogy! lol

The problem with the Expanded Universe is that it includes some very good books like Timothy Zahn trilogy, but majority of novels lack any literary quality. Pretty much the only reason I have kept reading them is because I do like to know how the story continues.

I also like the TOR period more. The setting allows more artistic freedom, as it does not carry as heavy lore baggage in comparison to the OT.  Many novels do suffer from the fact that authors are not familiar with all of the history. Luke's powers, for example, vary greatly from book to book - in some novels he is portrayed as a near god-like figure who can move mountains and in others he can baraly tie his shoes with the force without becoming exhausted.

It is also good to keep in mind that Star Wars is really more science fantasy than science fiction, which is also a reason that makes it more appealing to the masses.

I love star wars, the new movies, novels, the extended universe, I love it all.

The true SW universe gives me shivers. Some of the books are incredible. I enjoyed the Darth Bane series and the Han Solo trilogy. The movies were great, but the collaborative universe created in the books are incredible. If a game could capture that (thought SWG did briefly), I'd be "game!"

To an extent it does, not like it used to when I was young. I've always felt the EU was a tad more exciting than the movies were. When I was a teen I loved SW comics, as I grew older I really got into the novels. Out of all the popular Sci-fi/fantasy I.P's out there, Star Wars is by far my favorite. Followed closely by the Alien's movies/comics.

4 & 5.  Eyes closed and fingers in the ears during parts of 6.  Perhaps 10 minutes total from 1-3.

Have you noticed, that you are almost willing to forgive him the Ewoks because of Jar Jar?  I mean, all you have to do is watch Jar Jar for a few moments and you forget about how bad the Ewoks were.

The stories in the prequels were so rushed and butchered, it was impossible not to feel robbed when the credits rolled.  Yes, everybody cheered when Yoda spun around like a possessed cuisinart...but do you even remember which movie that was in, what happened before that - what happened after that?  The first three were just that bad...

And to be honest, how many folks would prefer to have the original three as opposed to redone three?

SW is like remembering that first kiss with your ex-wife while trying to forget the years of Hell leading up to the divorce.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I loved the movies, more so #4-6 and then #3, followed by #2, then #1 :-). The cast of #4-6 seemed to fit better. Love the music, use one of the songs as a ring tone on my iphone 4 lol. Love space, always have, equally to a fantasy environment. Never read the books. I'll miss magic since thats what I always play so here I come force lol.

The originals and the Old Republic setting: yes!

The prequels and all that (except the Jedi Knight series) which comes after the movies in the expanded universe: no!

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

The last thing Lucas created that was worth a crap was Willow, since then it has been half assed and rushed story lines / character direction.  I can only wish the IP gets handed off to someone with some talent in the future to give what was a fantastic inspiration for a generation.

For me I wasn't all that disappointed by the prequels, simply because I knew GL had lost the magic after releasing the digitally enhanced original trilogy. That is by far the worst thing LF has done over the years, IMO. TBH I'd rather wach the Christmas special than those.

As for the Ewoks, I loved The Battle for Endor made for TV movie when I was a kid.image

Unfortunately, I think SWTOR is not aimed at the people who liked Eps IV-VI - 16-21 year old males - or even the audience of Eps I-3 - 14-18 year old males. Instead, it's going for the audience of the damn cartoon Cone Wars - 12 year olds who will swallow anything Lucas and his proxies shovel down their throats.

The rail shooter certainly is. It's little better than the one in Clone Wars Adventures.  I'd venture that similar systems like PVP, crafting and raiding (which we know little about) have all been similarly reduced in complexity.
