It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
I've been playing this for a while now, I had my open beta key the first day it went up.
The UI itself isn't bad... And the menu system isn't bad. However the controls and navigation are terribad. Especially with a keyboard and mouse. If they'd implement hardware based mouse support instead of having it linked to the FPS, it might not be so bad, but as it stands now it takes forever to select things with the mouse, and about all its good for is holding right click so you can move the camera while you walk with WASD.
You can remap the keys in the config, but first you have to set them to use keys that aren't already in use. There's no way to replace a key with one already used for something else. (For instance to change how I and K move my camera, I had to set them to Y and U first.)
The second issue, outside of how bad the controls are, is the combat system and targetting. Right now its laggy as hell, but then again my ping goes upwards of 2k ms. I can only hope this is because the servers are all located in Japan right now and its part of the open beta stress test... That aside, trying to fight more than one mob is just pitiful. There is no way to "target next NPC" - this is probably due to some useless attempt to stop botting. Because of this, you have 2 opens to try and attack something once the first mob is dead... try and tab through your entire party and everything near you until you land on the mob (and hope you don't tab past it) or try to click on it with the mouse... And with a slow laggy mouse this is super hard. The end result of this is, of course, that people die. A lot. I will not be playing a tank in this game. Or a healer.
Aside from the controls and combat system though, the game is actually quite decent. It has some rare depth to it, and forces you to read and explore and actually become involved in the world to get things done. It also doesn't force you to quest like most recent games. Guildleves are MUCH better when done in a group. You only really get a bit of extra cash, so you're really just as well off grinding, but the psychology is different.
The gathering and crafting professions are very well done, but I have no idea why there isn't a recipe list in game... Forcing people to check third part fan sites for pretty much any and all information, and then preventing people from alt-tabbing seems like one of the stupidest design decisions that could have been made.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to buy it... I really WANT to like it... But we've had so many advances in UI design and control design since FF11 came out. You would have think they'd learn a thing or two... If I don't buy it, it will be solely because of the control system.

Im having a blast with this game so far.
But...crafting
THE HELL
The fact that you need to craft 20 different things just to create the back of a robe (you need the front and some craps too) to be able to craft a damn robe is already hard.
Im ok with that,i like the challenges.
But NO RECIPES? i have to check in other webs the recipes, and a lot of them are wrong, probably since the beta 3 had different recipes.
And i cant alt tab
Oh,and magic classes are so underpowered...lvled a lalafell conjurer to rank 8,the spells don't do a lot of damage, and the mobs 3 hit me,so i have to spam spells, wasting lots of mp.
I kill 3 mobs, recharge mp with my spell, kill 2 more mobs, and then run 5 min to camp rock.
To kill a green mob i use : Stoneskin,2 dmg spells,heal,dmg spell,heal,dmg spell,mob dead,i used 30% of my mana.
And if a mob crits me,im dead,no matter what i do.
I am doing something wrong?
After getting tired of being killed by green mobs,or getting crited by 240 when i have 360 hp,i started a Highlander Marauder.
lol,i never rest, the mobs die 10 times faster,i have more skills (conjurer animations and spells are all the same, but with different elements),and its much more fun.
I agree with everything you said kelarcanus, dead on seems you have to work just to lock on target and fight, graphics and music 10/10 but due to mouse being on hardware it trully is sluggish even on high spected PC. and the crafting... well I think you got to be hardcore to enjoy there crafting system lol. but yes also like you, I WANT to like this game, but will see how the offical changes from this.
I am wih you OP, though the graphics are a bit confusing, settings go lower, to nothing yet fraps still shows very similar numbers. The only thing is there is a little less stress on the CPU.
Lmao, you haven't playe XI have you? Silly goose. /snicker
This game is by far not like WoW, which is so easy mode compared with both of the FF MMOs. It's definitely slower, and you need to take your time, not just breeze through everything.
I have to admit, I have gotten a bit soft myself, after I've switched to WoW, but I'm getting back into the FF spirit a bit, though not completely yet. It's a lot like beer, an accquired taste. Just takes some time.
Alas, I don't think they have any plans to change the control system or the mouse or add a target next NPC feature... ever.
The fact that you have to craft 20 times to make a single item is nice. It means there can be an actual economy. Not knowing what you need to craft those items though.. is yeah.
Whats the point of drinking if you are not able to choose what to drink?
The Game was made to handle multicores, the more you got the better, if you got 3 cores you should be more then fine even with a lower end video card, but its VERY dependant on the multicores, was actually recommended that you have a 6 core lol
