One to select enemies (mouse) and controler to move/menus etc.
The graphics are VERY amazing (players mobs... are just ok), But players look AMAZING.

Regardless of the (usual) ob problems can the people that did get in shed some light on how the game behaves.
We are all anxious to know about the controls, the ui, the combat speed, overall playability, etc.
I know it's a bit early, but is it the pos that alot (before ob) made it out to be or is it a gem in the making?
Keep it civilized,
Thanks.
Sorry mate I'm not posting anything decent here it's not worth it ,the general hate to anything posted here regardless again is not worth it. All i can say is bloody fantastic and I am someone who plays all spectrums of games, including Darkfall , MO ,Eve so I aint a PvE geek...
For the first time since "AC" I think I am going to really really enjoy a game.
I have posted on fansites try here as one example:
This game is going to be niche, many will be disappointed. I found myself fighting the controls and UI as much as I did enemies. Too much menu scrolling for things that should only take a single key stroke. Targeting is like FFXI but worse. I played XI for like 4 years and I can't stand the controls, probably because I'm too used to more modern mouse+keyboard controls these days, they really fail in this aspect. Small UI tasks just seem like a hassle to me. I asked my friend who also played FFXI what he thought and his response was, "too bad you cant download 13 gigs in the same amount of time it takes to delete ".
SE said they wanted to bring in a more casual audience but I just don't see it happening. It will probably hold about the same amount FFXI did, SE really had a chance to expand their user base but they are just so set on doing things a certain way, and those ways usually just don't cater to the western market well. Needless to say, the reviews for this game are probably not going to be very good when the game releases. For people who cling and long for the old days of MMOs this might be a good game but if you want something new keep waiting.
If you have an old PS1. Get Riven or Myst and control those games with your controller, that gives you a good feel for how the mouse behaves in this game.
If you're open minded about FFXIV, try the following:
1) Use a controller and set it to the recommended setup on the beta website. If you hate the "idea" of using a controller for an mmo, then use only the keyboard, forget you have a mouse. If you cannot do either, try another game.
2) Be prepared to read the quests to know where to go. You will never see "?" or "!" on any npc.
3) When you open the map, you can use either the ijkl, right thumbstick, or mouse to move around the map. Everything is clearly marked on where you need to go. For example, a quest says, "check out the blacksmith's guild." On the map, it marks where the "Blacksmith's" guild is.
4) Your first guildleves are obtained IN TOWN but activated at a designated Aetheryte cyrstal. For example, you get leves in Limsa Lominsa but can only activate them at Camp Bearded Rock.
5) Take time to explore, the game is designed for it. You will be very pleased.
6) Take time to read the dialogue during the Story quests, they're well done, funny, and quite immersive.
7) Think of FFXIV more as an FF game rather than an MMO. In that regard, using the controller to navigate the menu is a lot of fun. It's very old school, and quite frankly fun to do.
8) When you die, open up the menu and select either return or Teleport.
9) Because this is an old school type mmo, be prepared to do a lot of running. This is important because you will never feel immersed in a world if travel is too easy. If you can go from one continent to the next, it doesn't feel big. If you have to run from one corner to the other, and it takes 15 minutes, then it feels big. Yes, I know you can teleport to any aytheryte you've been to, but that's limited, once your consumable runs out, you won't be able to.
10) Join a linkshell asap, one that has vent. You can play the game on controller while chatting it up on vent.
11) The UI may "seem" slugish but once I got used to the controller, I could sit and stand with only two clicks. I could acces the aehterite in two clicks of the controller button. Pressing x on my controller automatically targets nearest mob, and pressing X automatically puts me in combat. You can master the controller and this game becomes such smooth sailing. Modern mmo's have placed a big mental block on people.
I really really believe the UI complaints are more about how different FFXIV is compared to modern mmo's vs. whether or not it's bad. I never felt once it was bad during my 5 hours of playing. In fact, it was as though I never left FFXI. For those of you who want to give FFXIV a sincere chance, do so, you won't regret it. First time in a long time we truely have a different mmo on the market. No more carbon copy paste job from UI's found in WoW.
My 3 cents (longer than I anticipated posting).
EDIT: THE EMOTE QUEST. You have to target the NPC and THEN use the emote. If you do not target the NPC, it doesn't work. Apparently, for some people, this was a game breaker (lol).
Edit 2: In ffxi, i used keyboard/mouse for a year. Then someone told me you could use a controller witha PC... I thought to myself, wow, there's NO WAY a controller would be faster/smoother/easier than a keyboard. Well, I tried it and never looked back. Since then, I've wished other mmo's had a controller feature. I was hoping AoC had a controller feature.
If you don't like using a controller, then that's fair. If you choose not to use a controller based on principle, i.e. "this is an mmo, using a controller is STUUUUPIIIIDDDDDS," then just move on. Your loss.

Just use the mouse for running around. Right mouse button controls the camera then use either w or 2 on the numberpad to move forward. I havent found any way to do that using keyboard only.

Keyboard only:
WASD - Movement
IJKL - Camera
TAB - Targeting
That's pretty much it.
I knew about ijkl but the first time I tried that it worked so poorly I thought it wasnt intended to be used like that. Went back and tried again and I can see that technically you could run around using just wasd + ijkl, but using the mouse is still way better. Using the ijkl keys to control camera causes the camera to scroll in about halfway, plus it isnt as accurate as the mouse. It tends to overshoot on turns.
My only question is about the UI: is it still slow as hell (adding an ability to the action bar takes like 3-4 seconds to respond, map randomy wont 'unfurl', etc)?
Thats all I need to know. A game that is menu driven as much as this should have a top shelf UI, and the CB made me cancel my pre-order it was so bad.
and all the good factors are washed away by the fact that the UI makes the thing damn near unplayable...yes, even with a controller...
Strongly disagree, I use a logitech gamepad and have had zero trouble using it.
Calling the game unplayable because of the fact that you, personally, have difficulty configuring a gamepad to use with the game is quite ridiculous. There are even diagrams available to help you configure a gamepad so that the control scheme is as simple as humanly possible.
I have to wonder if some of you making these absurd claims have even played at all, and I don't mean that to be offensive to anyone (nor I am infering that anyone in particular is a liar), it's just my personal perception of things after some of the statements I have read today on these forums from people who claim to have played. The negative experiences I have read about are sooooooo far off the mark compared to my own experiences that for me not to call the legitimacy of them into question would be quite foolish indeed.
Sure, different people like different things, but this is getting old quick.

Control pads do help a ton and the game is playable. But the ui is not good. Its managable. Which is fine. But i just have to point out stuff like this. He exagerated and you gigged him for it.... and then you exagerated....

Really? What people are talking about is that when you click on a menu item and it opens a new menu it often takes 5 seconds for the new menu to appear. Are you saying this doesnt happen to you?

I have no 5 seconds of lag between opening menus. There is a 1-2 second lag depending on how the game is handling in the said area. But I have not experienced a 5 second lag myself.
The only time I do experience any issues with the UI is when accessing shops and the game has to wait to get the shop data from the server. That generally ranges from about 2 seconds up-to 10 seconds depending on the load / any lag at the time.
1, 2, 10 seconds. It doesn't matter. Almost every MMO made in the least 6 years has an INSTANT response from the UI. And I hate when people blame it on some of us not accepting that the game is 'different'. New ways of playing a game is 'different', slow is slow.
It is just a game made for Console and PC. Doing this requires a different interface than most are used to. Is it really that hard spending a bit of time and learning a new interface? It takes at the most a day or two to get it down.
They said that hardware mouse would not be in at launch, but if needed would be added later. They also said that UI sluggishness including mouse would be greatly improved in the launch version and is worse in beta due to logging and debugging issues.
None of the MMO's you guys have played could support a controller or be played on a console. It is actually a lot of fun playing an MMO on console so dont' be so close minded. Console games where a controller is all you have requires nestled menus. If it is too much for you to handle though this just won't be the game for you.
As far as confusion, mystery, unmarked npc's, etc. this is key to making FFXI and XIV a much more immersive world. Talk to NPC's, explore, it isn't that hard. Not everything needs a ! and ? to show you exactly what to do and where to go. At least for me it is just an insult to intelligence.
Everything in XIV is not going to be handed to you on a silver platter. You won't be told exactly what to do or where to do it or be given a clear line from point A to B where B is end game. It is just the way the game is, and the devs refuse to change it to be more like WoW. If you can't get past that it just won't be the game for you.
Don't be so quick to judge. You might be hurting yourself with early judgment and letting a unique game pass by in the sea of clones we are stuck with. Try to be a little open minded and maybe you will find something great like I did. Maybe you won't but at least you will have given it a fair shot.
I'm in Beta as well and I will agree that the interface takes some getting used to. I do think that Bureyku is right tho you just have to get in there and figure it out. One thing for sure is a fair number of people will get fustrated and quit very quickly come release. I'm looking at you all you WOW clone players LOL. One thing that could help is a tutortal to get people used to the interface sense it's such a bigh change from what people are used to.
Ff14 is not a bad game if you want that style of mmorpg however, despite any minor issues.

No it dosent happen to me at least not 5 seconde, maibe 1 or 2 max. The most hilarious thing is i tried the game with a ati radeon hd 4200, yes you heard me a piece of crap internal graphics card, at low setting of course but still i dont have the lag you claim to have.

Wait, is it still possible to get in OB by refreshing the application page? Or isn't it?
Waiting for: Archeage, Darkfall 2.0, and Planetside 2.
