Some people are seriously overreacting about community...
I've never understood such fears and complaints when it comes to populations. I mean, for crying out loud we ARE trying to play MMOs here, right? In MMOs you come across jerks, and you come across potential friends. Thats the nature of the term "online". It reminds me of how people complain about WoW's population, as if they just magically have a worse population than the others. The truth is that they just have a larger population, thus increasing the chances that you will come across someone you don't like. I played that game for a long time, and it had its share of idiots, as well as awesome people that I wouldn't mind hanging out with in real life. And stop acting like age is really such a huge factor here. I'm 27 years old, but I've had the privilege to develop some really cool online game relationships with players from 13-55 while playing games like WoW and other MMOs.
Personally, I don't want to just have one niche, or category of players in this game. I want a large population of various people, including the losers and no-lives that so many people are running from. That way it feels more like a real world, and I like that feeling. Variety in the population is important to MMOs in my opinion, because it increases the feeling of authenticity . It makes me more likely to appreciate real friendships when I find them, and even more likely to be protective of my guild's order, respect, and maturity. More people mean more money for the devs I love, meaning more content and more support.
If you don't like how someone is acting, MMOs have awesome social mechanics set in place to keep you enjoying your game. You are not forced to play with a jerk because like most MMO's, you can just go somewhere else. You are not forced to have to listen to a jerk in vent or voicechat, because you can turn off the speaker, or just block that individual player. Or you can just leave vent, or voicechat. You are not forced to have to continue reading a jerk's posts, because you can put him on ignore.
Also, I have to admit that some of the immature kids make me laugh sometimes, either because they are so silly and dumb (they're kids for crying out loud!), or because they may have said or done something that is legitimately funny (sorry guys, but I was one of those adults who actually laughed at some of the Chuck Norris jokes at times). A diverse community teaches you to learn how to deal with people who are not the same as you, and helps you develop a very important social skill that is essential to fun online gaming. And that is tolerance. Many adults have yet to learn this.
I want an extremely large population that is multifaceted, and colorful, not just a group of like-minded adults who spend their time congratulating each other on being like-minded...

With the pricing scheme every kid out there in the world will probably be able to save enough money to buy and play this game.
And its actually my biggest worry that this will kill a lot of the experience for me.. even if we have unofficial addult and roleplay servers announced these rebelous kids will come there (as it will be very easy to switch servers) with the sole reason to grief other players.
While i am sure that i can find a great guild and make many friends and even do some great roleplaying, i am almost sure that these kids will find ways to use the public event system to grief others.
I am not even blaming these puberal kids for their actions, as it is in their nature at that age. I am just forseeing some troubles ahead of us.
(((I think i might even join special servers that offer nothing else then just a place among likeminded people to play game. Imagine paying 5 dollars a month to play the game on a server tagged "RP" or "Addult". If it could keep the grievers away i would surely pay it... No extra content, just a safe haven.)))
It's as simple as ignoring them in PvE. But when you actually fight one of those kids in PvP, make sure you kill them. That's how I dealt with jerkoffs in GW1.

I'm probably one of those people who just get wet.
Maturity comes from a persons willingness to accept societal norm and etiquette, not their age. I am 24 and have been playing MMORPG games since I was 15. Did I do some immature things on the game then that I probably wouldn't do now? Sure - but the problem comes when some dick my age starts attacking the kid, and the kid without knowing how to give in counters until the entire chat is involved. Intolerance is certainly the root of all "age debates" and should be done away with.
This topic to me is about intolerance, and not age. GW1 was full of, and still is full of people 16 and younger. Know how I cope with that? Ignore them, and go my own way. If only everyone could be so "mature" - see what I did there?
People think it's fun to pretend your a monster. Me I spend my life pretending I'm not. - Dexter Morgan
Adults need to grow up then because their "wisdom" isn't helping them at all. I make friends of all ages, heck..I'm Pagan and I have Christian friends. I don't drink or smoke but I have friends who do. I am a "good girl" and I have friends who could be considered bad people.
Like-minded means close minded...and that is not helping the world nor the gaming world. It is ruining communities and places. Why don't you talk to those who are younger? I bet you will find you have some things in common with them.
Agreed. Idiots and crappy players exist in all ages. People do tend to get wiser generally when older but some don't and some gets worse.
But I do have one thing against kids: "My mom say that I have to stop playing and eat now" is something I heard a time too much.
No, just have the right difficulty so that the worst players get nowhere no matter of their age. I were in a guild headed by a retired guy and who had 2 16 year old officers (out of 5 including me) and they all were great, we were doing hard stuff together and no one felt out of place due to age.
Acting like a child and being young isn't the same thing. Neither is being old and being mature.
And I am not just agreeing with you because you are a female pagan
Lol, I'm 23 years old and if my mom says it is time to eat, it is time to eat..XD No really...I'm usually the one who is cooking 95% of the time. I agree that some younger people can be annoying and some adults can be annoying as well. People just need to realize that it isn't just the "younger people" ruining what they have.
I had to deal with a guy who is much older than me(I mean much older..like 50s) completely go crazy because the game he was playing had a Facebook account and telling me Facebook is the devil and they give out your information to everyone. That was the most frightening thing I have ever had to deal with.
Lol, yeah...I mean if we are going to who is going to ruin the community, what about the foreigners? Those who can't speak English or speak broken English..are they going to ruin everything for us?
ABout the dinner part...
Everyone and their grandmothers know in advance that dinner time is comming up.... Just don't start any big adventures/dungeon runs where other people count on your presence for the whole ride. Thats responsibillity. Most well educated people do understand this and wayt till after dinner to start these things. Tough in this case an MMO is a place where many youngsters learn about responsibillity to other team mates because the MMO communities are a pretty good but harsh learning school for this.. Leave you guild a few times for things like this and you get kicked for sure by most of them.
(May I write in blue here? Okay) I had to deal with the same 50 year old drop out of the party because his wife said dinner was done..it is on both sides, while it might be normal for younger people to do it, older people do it as well.
About the dispute with the 50 year old...
The problem you described there after is just as much his fault as it is yours, and those problems are mostly caused by the age difference. A man from 50 has a totally different view on things then a girl from 23. Your interfaces didn't connect on that subject and you both tried foolishly to convince the other of their mistake.. People like that can't be convinced they are wrong and discussing things like that in guild will lead to heated heads on both sides. I personally woul;d have led it be, if the moron wants to beleive such things, just let him or don't feed th trolls. Did you know why that man was convinced that Facebook was the devil. He could have some real life experiences with people abusing facebook and other information in job interviews and such. Which would have led him to beleive that facebook is the devil instead of the people abbusing the information.
All in all this could have been a dispute caused by the age difference and obviously different points of view comming with it.
I didn't say anything to this man, he went on about how he quit WoW over them having a Facebook account(he was playing LOTRO now) and I said "You do know LOTRO has their own account as well" and then another like 40-50 year old woman jumped up and down on my case with him about how Facebook steals stuff. I just explained (As I am an IT major) that if anything is stolen from you, it is usually your fault for putting it up in the first place such as your cell number on Facebook..it will only appear if you put it there in the first place. The old man(and old woman) never been on Facebook, don't have accounts. They hear from other people of what supposedly happen to them. I'm an IT major and I try to help people with things they ask and I usually have to explain things. I mean I do it with my grandma, I can do it with them Lol.
About foreigners speaking bad english...
Thast why i mainly play dwarves and orcs I am dutch and even my German is better then my English gramar. I try but not hard enough to type some reasonable English gramar. Most of the time i fail at that. But people talking other languages then English on a European English language server in General chat have allways been an annoyance to me, espescially if i knew those people where also able to communicate in English too.. I allways try not to really irritate me on things like that as i allready know that i will not be able to change things like that, so in my life i try to only put effort in things where i know that my effort helps. Its a good thing that on the GW2 dynamic content people can work together without the need to communicate in English
I am also a roleplayer at heart and i allways roleplay in /say /shout /emote. A lot of roleplayers (of any age) are allways whining about other people on roleplay servers not roleplaying in general channels like /say but allways chatting OOC. I have found that people can not be convinced that way. My solution is simple, allways roleplay in general channels and people will join in and it will be fun... (and by the way, its the younger people that roleplay way more then old ducks like me, and when roleplaying age does not matter at all)
I'm American...and people automatically hate my guts because they ask where I live and I say the U.S.A. I have no problem with broken English from people who speak any other language than English(it only makes me angry when your main language is English and you speak like it is a text message). I have even gotten to the point I ignore those who are speaking another language, I can understand Spanish...so I get what they are saying.
Oh don't even get me started on roleplaying...I am one of the original role players(since the times of AOL)...and...I hate how it has become and refuse to roleplay with people, I don't talk to people unless they ask a question in normal chat or talk to my guild members.
In my opinion, it will come down to whether or not the game's mechanics facilitate and encourage players to work together and foster some loyalty and camaraderie, or if the mechanics encourage the selfish, apathetic behavior found in most of the popular online games today.
Of course, the game could have the best community bolstering mechanics of all time, but if most of the players themselves are arrogant selfish jerks, then the rest of us are screwed.

That does make sense. I believe many adult players play online games as more of a hobby (like building model cars) rather than just a video game. I think that is where a lot of the contention comes from. It should be fun either way though, in my opinion.
I started playing online games fairly seriously when I was around 19. Before that, playing video games was always just for fun, a way to pass the time. As I grow older, I find that I enjoy building and detailing my characters more than just killing stuff, using my imagination to enhance immersion rather than flying through the content to get the next shiny reward, and caring about the community I am a part of rather than just using them as if they were NPCs.

Hmm, since they announced that moving servers is going to be much easier compared to what is the current MMO norm (read free, possibly on a reasonable timer) I guess the following is going to happen naturally:
You know, I already heard this a long time ago but just realized that we have no idea how this and guild will work together?
Can you hear the guildchat even if you are on another server than your main guild? Can you change quick enough to join a siege or a group with your guildies? Will people change servers until they find a group for the right dungeon?
I think you might need to abandon your guild when switching servers....
Hmm, doesn't have to be so.. They might well prepare for all the eventualities and guild transfers might be possible too. WAR allowed guild transfers, along with all the guild XP and achievements but it was a cumbersome affair.
And besides I've read somewhere, way back when this last wave of hype started brewing, that you'll not only be able to change servers permanently (like for keeps) but also "temporarily". Meaning you go for a visit to some other server but your char is still based on the old one. Hmm.. I guess the permanent transfers will be on a pretty long timer and you won't be able to move to the servers your old one is at war with. Temporal transfers might work only for PvE parts of the game... Hmm.. I'm really curious how Anet is about to go with this because it is a pretty innovative way of looking at the whole "multiple servers (WoW, WAR etc) vs world server (EVE, GW1)" thing..
Most intriguing...
As for the guilds, it might even be that guilds are "game-based" rather than "server-based" and may span multiple servers. Anything is possible really with the way they're approaching things.

Good info and thoughts, I know they confirmed there would a time-limit between transfers to manage the frequency of changes that people do (so it's basically manageable!).
They have closed discussion on Guild topics to date, so I'm sure they have some of this to work out before as is becoming their (good practice) habit, telling ONLY WHEN IT IS IN GAME (more or less). I think they are taking the Guild side of things seriously. I could foresee them swapping Guilds especially for WvWvW purposes and like you say, on either a temporary or more permanent basis.
Can't wait to find out more!
As for community, if the game is great, that will make people on aggregate be better and happier in game that, "Damn, this is guuuud'!"feeling.
You know, I have always held the philosophy that the reason younger people often act inappropriately is that Adults abandon them to figure out socially correct behavior all on their own. Their sub-communites are often like "Lord of the flies" situations accentuating the elevating the most primal instincts. Adult communities are not that immune to such behavior either I might add. The young deserve the oppourtunity to try and adapt to social situations that include adults.
Simply call out the socially inept behavior as such. Do it publicly. Do it respectfully and without an air of superiority and most everyone else in the community will support you. You will sometimes get a response filled with explitives. Amonimity + public chat makes people, young and old, very bold with their words. Ignore or Report those. Simply remain the "Adult", and continue to talk like it. People tend to respect those that remain in emotional control no matter the context. Provide the positive example for all of those "listening".
Think like a 13 year old who is actually interested in learning the socially appropriate way to interact. Who would you rather be like: the loud obnoxious smart ass that everyone hates, or the wise clam emotionally in control person who pointed out teh innappropriate bahavior (respectfully)? The attention starved are the exception here (they don't care if the attention is positive or negative).
It won't change overnight. But overtime the communities will get better and better. Now admitedly I am a tolerant, patient optimist, but life is better this way (the only real "wisdom" I have to offer this conversation) ;-).

Don't know what to say other than I disagree. Unless you have help from the company itself and do the above it won't happen. Too many games don't do enough to help the community.
AHHHHHHH... i want to play this game so bad its physically painful
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
It isn't the youngsters that bother me, kids will be kids, but the grown-ass men that talk like little babies, "iz kittenz madd?", that talk, disgusts me
I couldn't care less. You have no idea how many adults out there that's so immature that they're worse than kiddies. Adult or not has nothing to do with behavior.
Here here! What is with so many people going "Kids are going to ruin it" I've heard it in LOTRO...I think everyone who complains about a "child" ruining a community should actually look in the mirror and realize that in the end, it will probably be them that does it. They are ruining the game for themselves by thinking this way.
why do you think that most older people don't get allong with younger people to well in real life ?
Mainly because they have acheived a lot of wisdom oer the years that just makes them see theirs and others action differently...
When i am in a bar, i don't go to the place where the youth hangs out, i go to the place where i find more like minded people. That feeling i'd love to find back in my gaming community, and thats a good enough reason for me to have different servers just the way that there are different types of bars.
Don't get me wrong tough, i don't say the youth is evil, they are just different in their expectations of things, things they see as fun will iriitate a lot of addults.
Old people are jelous of young people...
Comments like these are what gives people the impression that young people/teens ruin the community. In EQ, UO, SWG, etc I found immature people of all ages and backgrounds and those are the ones ruining game community not just the young. I've grouped and been in guilds with many younger players and the vast majority of them were very cool and good gamers. A few jerks can give the rest a bad name. As long as people play the game without trying to annoy the rest of the players-griefing, arguing, etc-then all different sorts of people of all ages will form a strong and fun community.
With the pricing scheme every kid out there in the world will probably be able to save enough money to buy and play this game.

Relax man, you sound like you think the entire game will be PVP. Like any MMO it will be mostly PVE with coop. Just make sure you roll on a PVE server that's all.
While i am sure that i can find a great guild and make many friends and even do some great roleplaying, i am almost sure that these kids will find ways to use the public event system to grief others.
See, there's your mistake. Putting the idea into their heads
I don't mind playing with kids, not all kids are jerks and lots of adults are. I myself used to play MMOs in my early teenager days in the late 90's and older players would often think i was very mature, "no way lol i thought u were liek 18+" they used to say just after finding out about my real age.
However, kids are definitely more inexperienced in gaming than us (not sure about this nowadays though haha), so they could be a problem in a hardcore game, which GW2 won't be.
Playing: Starcraft II. Played: Tibia, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft. Wanna play: Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Final Fantasy XIV, Diablo III.

As for community, if the game is great, that will make people on aggregate be better and happier in game that, "Damn, this is guuuud'!" feeling.

Hats off to you Vesuvias. The world would be a better place if everyone had your mentality...
"Everyone dies. It is how one lives that matters."

"P.S. MAKE NO DEALS WITH THE WOLF." -Durzo Blint-
"But, there is one they fear.
In their tongue, he is Dovahkiin -- Dragonborn!" -Game of the Century-
Don't know what to say other than I disagree.
Relax man, you sound like you think the entire game will be PVP. Like any MMO it will be mostly PVE with coop. Just make sure you roll on a PVE server that's all.
Kids gonna play a video game? NO WAI
I just laugh at the people that expect other people to be mature in the internet, its not gonna happen.
See, there's your mistake. Putting the idea into their heads
Well, i guess every kind of person will play GW2.
