Which MMORPG To Play?

Hello everyone!

I am taking a semester off of school and aside from some beach fun I have planned, I was wondering what MMORPG game, in your opinion, would be a good one to try for me.

I have a regular computer with 768Ram and a GeForce FX5200 video card. I have no plans on upgrading so there ya go haha!! I like to solo for the most part and if I do group, prefer that it be when I want to not because I'm forced to. I do tend to like playing wizards or mages but I'm not limited to only D&D type games and I like roleplaying.

Any good advice or opinions is much appreciated. I'm looking to find something to get addicted to during the 4 months I will have off.

Thanks so much for you time.

I got 1gb ram & GeForce FX5200 video card, its good for mmorpg:s (just avoid AntiAliasing & such). My recommendation is Anarchy Online, its sci-fi & free until jan 2006 (no expansions, if you buy a expansion monthly fee kicks in).

Runescape is also free....I dont recommend it.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response and recommendation. In terms of monthly fees and such I don't mind to pay and I have no problem going out and buying a game either. I do plan on upgrading this weekend to 1GB so I probably should have mentioned that haha!

Anyways, more suggestions would be nice. Thanks so much again!

If you want something different (not just the same old kill-get xp and loot- level- repeat) try EvE Online. There's a 14 day trial, and it's only 20 bucks to upgrade to a permanent account.

Great community, and a very unique, thinking type of game. Well worth a look.

    I reccomend World of Warcraft.

Yes, it sound cliche, but this game is your best bet especially since you dont mind paying for it. It will consume your life however and I doubt you will stop playing after your vacation period.

On a free game note, I reccomend Knight Online or Xiah.

KO is already out of Beta and is free, its decent, but experiences lag due to those annoying player in europe who hog the bandwidth. I wish they would kick them since KO is an American game and europe has their own games.

Xiah is very anime-ish and oriental and is still beta although with a good PC, the visuals are crisp and absolutely stunning.

Anyways, about your vacation, the games will likely carry on back to school and you'll find yourself playing everday after school for at least a month or two until you finally get bored.

Here's one you could try. It will work fine on your comp, and it's a pretty fun game. Expansion pack comes out on May 4.

I reccommend Everquest or World of Warcraft. They are my favorite mmorpgs yet and they never get boring. The only major issue with them is how addicting they are image but are by far the best of the best. They are both fantasy and yeah im pretty sure you know about them just check out the major info at

    www.station.com look for everquest image

    www.worldofwarcraft.com

both games offer the wizard and mage class selection. EverQuest current level max is 70 and World of warcraft's is 60 btw. World of warcraft is in my opinion realy easy to level your characters. On Everquest it is not as easy but both of the games are equaly fun image

hi! WOW is also great 'coz i used to play that game but i found a new one called RYL: Path of the Emperor & it is pretty much greater than WOW for me. it has a 14 days free trial wherein you could see if that game is really for you but i tell you guys if you're really a gamer, this game is for you.

give this a shot guys, there's nothing to loose trying out  this game, right?

You guys are mostly suggesting the most popular games. What about Ryzom, Ultima Online, or Asheron's Call?

These are games that I think you may like, but I don’t really know your tastes so I may be wrong. They are in descending order on how good I think they are.

    World of Warcraft
    City of Heroes
    Eve Online
    The Saga of Ryzom
    Everquest II

The last 3 games also have a trial, so give the trial a shot; you may like the game and buy that. I suggest you check some reviews, screenshots and also the requirements of any game that is mentioned so that you may also get as close as you can to having your own opinion of a game and not that of others.

If soloing is your thing, I suggest you make sure to try Eve Online’s free trial. You will spend most of that time alone doing your missions and you would not find much reason to need any help. In my case, in a month I had only teamed up with somebody who needed me to haul ore for them(they paid me like 1mil per hour so it is a very rewarding career). World of Warcraft is also a safe bet because you do not depend on a team unless you try epic quests or just those odd really hard missions. City of Heroes would be something you may not like unless you are willing to change your style to that of being in a team.

Next to the others I have found The Saga of Ryzom to be the most complicated and also hardest. If you fight a monster and manage to kill it, you may still get killed in the next battle. Also I had not seen anyway of running away unless you are close the town and a guard will help you as any creature can outrun you (while attacking you) ending up with your death but since the only penalty can be fixed by a little rest it also isn't much of a big deal.

That leaves Everquest II. This game I only played the trial that arrives to lvl 6 and I can safely say that it has wonderful graphics and that alone would make me buy the game if only I didn’t have World of Warcraft in mind. Not much for character customisation… but I have seen worse.

Wow! I can't thank you all enough! I mean you guys have just been so incredible and generous with your advice and suggestions! I basically have two weeks before I have 4 months off so I'll be deciding between now and then which game to get sucked into. I'm liking the ones with the free trials so I can give them an actual try before deciding so I may go with them first but I'll definitely be going to all those games websites!

I had no idea so many existed. I mainly want to find a game where RP'ing isn't rare and as I already mentioned before, grouping isn't a mandatory thing. You guys are awesome for all your advice and I definitely have plenty to look into now.

For the games with the Free Trial: Eve Online, Everquest II and the others, I'm assuming this means you don't have to have the actual game CD? Thanks again so much, I had no idea so many people would be nice enough to help. You guys are awesome!!  image

Most of the free trials are downloadable through the games website, and others like Dark Age of Camelot you can test out by being a member of MMORPG.com. Some require you to submit credit card information because they want to know that you are serious about playing the game. As long as you cancel your subscription before the trial is over they won't charge you anything for testing the game out.

You could also give the beta of Guild Wars a shot. You can get the beta pre order of the game for about $10 and it lets you play in this weekends (April 15-17) beta event, which will be the final beta weekend before the game is released April 28 2005. You'll then be starting a brand new mmo just like all of the rest of us.

There are also quite a few free mmorpg's out there that you could try. Most of them, from my experiene, arn't very good, but there are two that I recommend... Knight Online, and ROSE Online. They are completely free, and though ROSE probably doesn't fit the D&D Genre you might be looking for, Knight Online might.

I recommend WoW, at least until Gods and Heroes comes out. Then ask me again.  image About the other ones with free trials, if you like space and economics go play EVE, if you like twitch go play Jumpgate, if you like sci-fi and fantasy go play Ryzom. If you like old games, go play UO if you can get past the dated graphics and AC if you can't even though by now its not much better. Still think WoW will keep you most entertained. I wouldn't recommend trying a brand new MMO right when it comes out unless you're used to them, they tend to be real frustrating at first and buggy when they launch, no matter how long they've been in beta. Let us know what you pick.
