Which City is the best!!!

NadriellNadriell Member UncommonPosts: 197

Just got done playing, created a character in each city and i have to say the tree hippy in me came out... I really like that forest city, what the hell is it called again. Gradania, or whatever..

Played FFXI for years....... beaten every FF game from 1 (accept the japanese 2 because its evil) - 13... you know what got me.... when i did my first leve and i heard the victory music, I really like this game, because i am a Final Fantasy Fan... been a Fan of 11, and the whole series for that matter.

I can see myself settling in this game for quite some time. Call me a fanboi, i don't give a damn.... Go play what you want to play and troll someone who gives a shit..

Anyway, back on topic, WHICH city do YOU like..... hmm?

P.S.

I will be glad when all these haters, and bitching people drop off this forum, and go find some nother new messiah to hang onto. ITS A FUCKING GAME..... go outside sometime k? you shouldn't base all your hopes in life on a digital world, its not healthy......

I played a good chunk of time tonight, and i can honestly say, i hit lv. 6 physical lvl and 3 archer.... and i got a hempen robe.... the sense of REWARD for getting that robe after doing the story arc for 20k sold the game.... FINALLY a game that can give me a sense of achievement,.

Gridania is my favorite, as was Windurst from FFXI, and both have that aura of similarity, but with enough differences to really set them apart.  Plus I love the sounds of running water, and there are streams and waterfalls everywhere...yatta!

    Gridania has my vote too.

WARNING! mild spoiler of the first cinematics in grey italic!

It kinda reminds me of FF VI (my favorite one), especially with those very "special" encounters you make within the first 10 minutes of play (the mo.. and a tr....); further in the city in the NPCs dialogs, all those references to ghosts, phantoms. The score is also very much akin to the introspective parts of FF VII, if you know them well you'll recognize some of the themes re-arranged very subtly by Nobuo.

The forests in FF are always of a mysterious kind, they seem to be a place where nature always exerts its powerful yet benevolent influence, if you're on the good side of the fence. To find out where lies that fence (both tactically and philosophically), and what would be the "right" "path", is often the very point of one's team/character crossing that forest in the first place, from a scenaristic standpoint. In short: I love'em. Best video game forests if you ask me!

But Uldah is nice too, in a very different way--reminds me of FF XII's capital (desert, trade, culture, accent, etc). I think we'll all spend some time there at one point or another. Depending on what the empire will do next...

Apparently there's a bit of tree hippy in all of us.

this should be a poll, and Gridania is the best

I'm torn between Gridania due to the story and Ul'Dah, due to the setting, openness and MUSIC.

I found the forest a bit to tunnel like for my taste yet I'm loving the story and atmosphere of Gridania.

ARgh....where should I start at launch. Maybe I'll just make 2 characters and have one start in each city. Yeah, that's what I'll do. This way I can focus on a melee character with one and a caster character with the other. Yeah, that sounds good. I did the same in FFXI and it worked just fine.

Poor Limsa Lominsa, I NEVER want to go over there again, rofl.

The desert city because its compact and the area outside is nice and open.  The forest is by FAR the worst for the exact opposite reasons, its rediculously spread out and the tunnels mean you stumble over some other player every 2 seconds and since that causes a jerk in momentum its extremely irritating.  I thought the entry cinematics and such were pretty good for all three cities, its purely by design that I've aquired such animosity.

I started gridania this time because I liked the intro best.  But one complaint is that it is so far to run from the one newb site to the other and alchemy has L1 levs at both of them.  Also, cant find a place to buy conjurer staff.

Carpenter guild sells the conjurer weapon, took me forever to find.

    Limsa Lominsa

    Pros:

    Most developed of the three.

Low to mid level mobs seem more plentiful.

    Fairly open map.

"Emote Quest" here is the easiest to complete.

    Cons:

    Most confusing city lay out.

    Least attractive city.

If you've run the benchmark, you've already seen the intro, maybe multiple times.

    Gridania

    Pros:

Good looking city, well laid out.

    Best looking wilderness zone.

    Most entertaining intro.

    Cons:

Wilderness zone is a narrowly constricted maze, very closed in.

Low level mobs are most sparse.

Easy to wander into an area with aggressive mobs that will one shot you, very near to areas with lower level mobs.

Very frustrating "emote quest". Mistranslated and the kids you need to mimic lack the proper animations.

    Ul'dah

    Pros:

Best looking city. Well laid out.

Desert theme (some will love it).

Most wide open wilderness zone of the three.

OK availability of low level mobs.

Also a good intro. Best combat element of all the intros.

    Cons:

Desert theme (some will hate it).

    Least visually impressive wilderness zone.

"Emote quest" almost as frustrating as Gridania. Learning the emotes a little easier, using them in the next step of the quest was frustrating though.

One leg of the main quest line falls back on the very, very cheap mechanic of not allowing the PC to win, under any cicumstance. Having your opponent at 2% health, while you're at 65%, then having all your attacks for the next minute either miss of just not register, frustrating BS!

Maybe some others can add some more.

Each one has it's own unique flavor, pros and cons, etc...

One thing to note, during OB, I could not find any way to travel to another capital city, so if you plan on focusing on a craft, or anticipate needing crafted goods for a combat class, you might want to pick a city with the given craft as a focus. For instance, Gladiators will need to buy a shield from a crafter, but woodworkers can only learn the proper skill for one of the ingredients in Gridania. So, even though Ul'dah has the Gladiator's Guild and colleseum, you may not have access to a shield for quite some time. (If city to city travel is easy in retail, this will be of almost no concern).
