What is this game's target audience?

LienhartLienhart Member UncommonPosts: 662

Alright so this game already alienated a large portion of MMO players becuase of the system requirements. After alienating that portion, they decide to piss off anyone who doesn't want to use a controller and force them to adapt to something besides K&M (I came from FFXI, even I find the new controls...well, strange). The targetting is a mess and...oh my, I feel like it's APB/Global Agenda all over again because they screwed up on the target audience.

Right now, there BIGGEST target audience are those from Final Fantasy XI....however, they managed to kill them off too with the exp and quest restrictions to force casual play, so my question:

Who the flaming hell are they targetting? FFXI players are all hardcore, this game doesn't allow that. System requirements are too steep to allow the average computer to run AND the controls/gameplay differs greatly from what is generally accepted in the MMO world.

Someone explain? =/

People who like ff11... and a bit more who didnt like it for small quality of life reasons, so they tried to fix that.

My brother and I have bought every FF game since Final Fantasy 1. This is probably going to be the first one I don't buy.

A friend of mine who played FFXI up until now has told me he won't be buying it either.

And for those who will buy it, hope their computer can run it. Not everyone has an e-peen as big as mine in terms of computer specs (and it still lags lol)

what are your computer spec? And a lot of the lag comes from ambient occlusion and depth of field, turn that offf, along with AA, and there is no lag at all.

I think the target audience is fans of previous FF games and yah, that's about it.  If anyone tells you running for 20 min to go kill Mr. Mushroom is great fun then they're idea of fun differs from mine.

Then you are not the hardcore FF fan you claim to be. Have any posters, resin statuettes or moè body pillows?

That's the kind of fan that will buy this regardless of whether it will play on their comp or not.

Well, there's the niche mmo crowd that considers "exploring" and "working" in a game fun.

Dunno about them, but when I come to play a game it's after a midterm or something very stressful. The LAST THING I want to do is work. I suppose, running 20 minutes to killl Mr. Mushroom makes those who don't have a job or school have meaning in their life?

Granted, I was the same way in grade 10 when FFXI came out...it made me feel so good about myself...!!!!

(Until my ex dumpped me becaues I was overweight and fat then I woke up and stopped pretending to be a Mithra).

I noticed that....and that's why I've made 2 topics on whoever coded this game needs to get shot.

You make a lot of assumptions in your post ie "they managed to kill"  FFXI players off, "FFXI players are all hardcore".  I played FFXI for over two years, never played any other FF game, and I'll be playing FFXIV.  So, I guess that makes me part of the "target audience".  I have my controller set up 99% the way it was set up for FFXI and it works exactly the same.  If you used a controller in FFXI then FFXIV with a controller should not feel strange.

It will do fine with it's core group which is FF fans, and it will do well with those who are looking for a complex PvE game. That gives it a potential Target market of millions.

    You're a minority.

Most people who I played FFXI with were jobless or out of school. Every time we logged on, it'd be at least 6 hours..you can't get anything done in less than 4 anyway LOL

Yes, the people who'd actually be interested in this game are a minority - but they think they are majority - it's funny. The only way you'd like/enjoy this game is if you're willing to throw away your real life - just like FFXI.

There's been times when I felt like I threw away my life for a game but I don't think that will be an issue with this one.

I wouldn't say that. The amount of commitment you would have to put into this game seems small. It seems like this MMO will be more of a social thing? Or for casuals?

See this is why I'm so confused as to who the hell they're targetting. FF fans is a pretty damn vague term. I've bought every FF up to XIII. XIII pissed me off so badly I wanted to destroy the disc (had my gf not given it to me as my bday present). It just seems like the Japanese can't make games anymore.....siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Or maybe they're happy with just the Japanese market? Perhaps they don't give a rats ass about the Western market? I'm pretty damn sure this game won't be very big in Korea, China or Taiwan =/

Where did I infer (because I definitely didn't say) that I was in the majority?  I manage to have a family, career, and life while still playing MMOs.  It can be done and lots of people do it.  If someone has so little will power that they can't balance real life and a game then they should get help.  Some of us can enjoy a game without having to be max level immediately (took almost a year to get my first 75 in FFXI) and have all of the best gear.  My wife, kids, and job are first priority.  I play games in my spare time.

Actually this game works very well for players who are in the one to four hrs per day ball park. You don't have to play an mmo game 12 hrs a day to enjoy, complete, or be good at it...half a brain is min sys requirement for XIV.

The target audience is people who want to escape any traces of the bad part of the WoW community. Which is a pretty big chunk of that  community. And this game certainly does not appeal to someone who wants a game similar to WoW.

  • IllyssiaIllyssia Member UncommonPosts: 1,507
I think a lot of people who play WoW simply get addicted to its simplicity, and it makes it very hard for them to enjoy other types of mmo. Blizzard gives their games a very low learning cue, and they are all point and click mouse games of one sort or another, with even the same cartoon graphics present in games like SC2 and WoW, and links it all together with battlenet social networking.

Considering that their are over 6 billion people on the planet. I would say most people that are interested in any video game are the minority.

And a willingness to throw your life away sort of goes hand in hand with mmo's.

You're onto something here.   Let me start off by saying that I played FFXI for 2 years and played many other FF games.  I would consider myself an FF fanboi.  I was really hyped about this game, and still am.  But, after playing OB for the last three days, i'm left with a lot more questions than answers.

I completely agree with you that this game has an identity crisis.  It appears to be attracting FF players based on the use of controller, same races, etc.  BUT, as you stated, FFXI was a hardcore game.  It required a lot of time, and committment.  This game is designed to be casual (fatigue system, etc etc).

The only only thing I can think of is this game is designed for japanese console gamers who no longer want to have the time committment required in FFXI.  This is sooo confusing because this creates a niche inside of a niche.  It's not like they're trying to bring all of FFXI members into FFXIV, but rather, the casual ones?  Guess what, casual players did stick with FFXI, they moved onto something else or gave up alltogether.

The game's identity is schizophrenic.  It alientates its hardcore base but also alienates casuals based on the UI design/difficulty curve/ etc etc.

I will keep my preorder, but I'm really wondering what else they have to offer.  If it's 8 guildleves every 48 hours.... then this game is FFXI's ugly sister more than anything else.

    Finally, someone who isn't stupid.

Honestly, the whole reason why I see things the way I do is because I'm an investor...and with SE's decision, just what the hell are they telling their share holders?

And worse yet, if you look at their stock price...it's just been dropping. Now normally I'd advise for one to buy a stock when it drops, but because I actually know about SE and their idenity crisis (Final Fantasy XIII, NIER, and now Final Fantasy XIV) I'm really beginning to question their abilty to create games with a target audience in mind =/
