Ok, I started in uldan or something like that. Went to a camp that had a blue crystal in the middle. Got a levequest. Talked to every npc. Here's my questions.
1. Are there no npc given quests, or just none at this camp, or just none at this camp at level 2?
2. Do people group? I saw no one asking for a group, received no group invites etc.
3. Why can I put points into fire, water, wind etc, but the two spells I have that list damage types have umbral and astral?
I guess that's enough for now.

Game is in beta. Only a few quests are available for testing purpose.
Grouping is probably going be an important part of the game. But currently its beta... most people are busy messing around and trying to learn how to go around to start grouping. (And usualy its pretty rare that people groups at very low levels)
The points you can put into elements dont have anything to do with the spells you have : they are the resistance to those elements. (everybody, including monsters, has them. Whatever you have spells or not)
I hope you don't seriously believe they wouldn't test stuff before release. I assure you, whatever is in the game now is all you will get at release.
However, thank you for the answers. Still don't know why you attack with elements with odd names bearing no relation to resistances you can get. Seems overly complicated, but at least now I know it's not related to attack.
Just to make a correction to above.. the points in elements do boost your spell damage in that particular type (by a reasonable amount too.).
Did anyone reached the 4th city, the one that is for players of higher level ? I didnt try very hard but each time I tried to go into the very remote part of the maps, I ran into aggroing monsters that were 1-shooting me. So I dunno if that city is actualy in the OP or not. If it isnt in the OP, they you got your answer : The devs announced long ago that there would be 3 starting cities and at least a 4th one for higher level.
You dont need a public beta tests to tests quests, monsters and so on. You only need it to test the game mechanics and multi-player part. SE never beta tested any extension for FFXI, even those that were adding whole new systems to the game. Is Blizzard beta testing their WoW extensions ?
As for the elements.... well in FFXI there was more than the 4 standard ones : earth water aero(wind) fire blizzard(ice) thunder(electricity) light and dark....
everything gets tested. everything.
so how do I boost umbral and astral damage since that's what my spells do?
Are you supposed to be able to boost anything before, let say, level 20 ? lol
Give me my "ultimate dragon slayer sword of doom+10" now!
u srius?
Leveling gave me points to put into elements. I'm just asking how I can effectively spend those points. my god...
