Need a new game... sell me on one.

Ok so I just finished playing oblivion (i know im way behind)... I have played a lot of mmorpgs but have had a tough time sticking to one with the exception of Atlantica. I'm in college right now so I don't want anything thats real heavy on the grinding. I want a good community with plenty of people. I'm picky...this is obvious to me because I can't find any mmorpg to really keep me interested, I played Atlantica for two separate time periods, about 2 months each time, but then I just got bored with it. It can be p2p or f2p. Like I said I want a good community with plenty of people and a good clan system.

I'm not being lazy I just haven't ever found a game that really drags me in and im hoping someone can convince me that there is a good one out there...

A list of some games I've played, there are plenty more...

WoW (like 5 years ago for about 2 weeks)

Knight online

ROSE

Atlantica

Flyff

2moons

sword of the new world

florensia

So ive bascially played a lot of f2p games, maybe that's why I never really got into one... but I am certainly open to pay to play ones as well now.

No better time than now to check Aion out. Expansion went live yesterday, reception is great, lots of new content and items, plenty of stuff to see and do, the population is seeing loads and loads of new and returning players back for the expansion, too. Really good time to try checking it out if you haven't, or if you have and it's been a while.

Game has made a great turnaround recently and is going to continue moving in the same direction, hopefully.

Try something like World of Warcraft or Warhammer online. Or from the end of the week how about some f2p Lord Of The Rings action? Demos available for the first two. Try before you buy.

Thanks, gonna check out Aion and Warhammer....I haven't tried either before. I would be a little weary of playing Aion with a brand new (literally) expansion comming out. I have heard a lot of things about Conan, some good, some not so good.

The expansion is the reason you want to come back, trust me! Population is great right now. What you have to keep in mind with Aion is while the expansion is brand new for us, the people out east have had a bit longer. The good thing about Aion is you never have to worry about expansion launches and such, they iron all the bugs out before we get them for the most part!

Expansion launched yesterday, performance is great, no ground breaking bugs, no memory leaks, nothing scary like that. Just a bunch of added polish and content; a really good time to check the game out! Hope to seeya around.

I've played a lot of those games also.  Funny to see someone else remembers the Rose and not many have played Atlatica and  Sword of the new world.  So it sounds like we have similar tastes.  You might find Aion and Conan to be cookie-cutter.  After playing an epic MMO like EQ or the single player Oblivion other games just feel like copy cat games.  This type of game leads your every step on each quest with pointing arrows of where to go and big flashing neon lights saying "here here this is where you need to go". image

Oblivion is a great game, and Conan and Aion are ok but watered down versions of a really good, in depth game.  You'll get maybe 2/3 of the way through the areas and stop, thinking "wait this again".  Gah been there done that.  If you couldn't get into WOW, I hate to say it but Conan and WAR will not be any better.  They are different, but I've played all three for at least 3 months and they are just to similar to other games and nothing to get excited about.

Many have commented on the forums about this phenomon.  The first MMO you play within a certain genre will be the best you'll ever like.  Maybe down the road your tastes will change and you might like a type of game again.  But there's no replacing that first great MMO you played and fell in love with.  For me it was in RPG setting EQ.  Even sci-fi RPG games like Anarchy Online, apocolyptc games like Fallen Earth, comic games like City of Heros, or pvp games like WAR didn't hold my attention for long.

So maybe something more unique you'll enjoy.  If you are into pirate themes, Uncharted waters (5+ year old asian game being released soon for NA) or Pirates of the burning sea offer a dynamic and interesting challenge.  EVE also if you like more pvp oriented space games.  These games are also player economic based.  Do you like games that are more player crafted oriented?  They might work.  You might get into Dungeon and Dragons Online.  It is a typical RPG game but the combat and group dynamics can be pretty fun, and a lot of it can be played f2p.

I'm looking for a new game my self and like you I just can't find one that keeps me interested for more than two months. Usually is the community that kills the experience for me, I can do solo, but eventually that bored me too.

I would suggest DDO if you don't mind the repetitive quest instancing. Having to do the same quests over and over for every character killed it for me...you know after playing for a while you'll be able to do the quests solo and with your eyes closed, but the game is still fun and the character builds are interesting. I wouldn't say the community is the greatest but it won't be difficult for you to find a guild if you know what you are looking for. These days the game is free to play so you don't lose much by giving it a try, not playing for a while, and then getting back to it when you feel like playing again.

For a more open free world I would say try Ryzom. This game is very unique and you have to go in there with the mind set that it's something you've never tried before. The world is big, beautiful, dangerous and definitely not easy to explore alone (at least in the early levels). There are many reasons why I liked the game; for one classless character, purely skill base, and the crafting system is another game within the game that is very smart and rewarding. The community is unlike any other, they are friendly and helpful, and can equally be very mean if you turn out to be immature and a troll. You will soon find your self alone. Ryzom has a 21 day free trial, and subing is very cheap, I think 10 US dollars per month, cheaper if you buy other offers.

I'm currently playing COH/Going Rogue so I'm going to recommend it too. I like the new powers and the expansion but it just feels like is all the same to me. Teaming can be easy and also hard at times. The community is helpful and there are some quality players in game, but there are more idiots than anything else. Maybe I'm just getting old and don't have the patience anymore, or maybe I'm just having a terrible experience this time around. I still recommend the game because it is pretty good, the archetypes are interesting, lots of fun blowing things up and the combat is pretty smooth. It is all instances though, but not like DDO, you have more choices as far as what missions you want to do. The game is enjoyable, and you can solo too, as well as PvP. But start in a populated server, like Virtue or Freedom, where you can easily find a team and make friends.
