What's Wrong With Rags?

MithiosMithios Member Posts: 271

Lately indy companies and distinguished MMORPG companies have been pumping out games that your character starts out looking like they've already saved the world and recieved thier crown. What I mean by this is that in a great many games, you start out at level 1, and even your starter set of armor (or peasent clothes) looks like they were handcrafted in the depths of the sacred Elven forge of eternity. OK, so maybe I'm being a bit over dramatic, but I rememeber when I first started playing EQ.

You start out in a simple robe of cloth armor. As your character grew, so did your armor, so to speak. I remember the first time my character finally got thier first leather vest. I felt like the hero of the day. When I finally got the last piece and had a full set of leather, I was king. Nothing could be better than this. When I got my first chainmail, again, I felt the awesome acomplishment of upgrading. But when I finished off my first set of chanmail, it was as if the heavens themselves had opened up and bestowed to he the holy armor of divinity.

I liked the visual feeling of accomplishment that came with all my hard work and patience. Now as time goes by, more and more you see games whee you start out, or very soon after with gear that appears as if it should be worn or used by someone that fought countless enemies and saved countless lives, and would sit at a table with kings. Yet, with all that visually flashy gear, you're lucky not to get stomped by a rabbit having a bad day.  When I see games that start you out already looking like the hero at level 1, I am immediately turn off. Anyone else?

A tiny mind is a tidy mind...

agreed, devs have forgotten the importance of having all those guys playing female characters running around in worn out barely concleaing anything rags.

I'm not much into Aion, but i think instead of proressing out of the rags in most cases the rags could change or get worse depending on the the character.  Almost like the invinceable begger.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

  • I know what you're saying, but I'd rather start out in decent looking armour than play well into your level 20's or higher before getting anything that remotely looks good.  LoTRO and AoC are examples for me where I had this feeling.  I'll resist naming games I felt got it right attempting to prevent being flamed, if I haven't touched a nerve on some already....(I did enjoy my time in the two mentioned games, but have moved on.)

I think maybe you are just used to WoW's standard here. You started out looking like a bum, and still at 70 you looked like a bum that had found 20 bucks.

It was refreshing not hating how you looked in Aion, even at level 1. Its not like you wont get even more shinier armor as you level up. It becomes quite apparent at 30ish. And theres a really distinct difference between a level 1 character and a level 30+ in abyss armor.

Yeah that makes sense to me.  At the end of the day you want a feel of progression gameplay + visual-wise.  Going from the begger look to the Knight in Shining Armour is a great example, simple but effective.  But it all falls down on what players want these days, alot arent that big on look and more on the stats of the character/armour/weapons.  Don't get me wrong most players want a nice good looking game, but I personally feel in the end they dont care about that type of visual progression...thus the devs act accordingly.

Unless you play a female toon, then the difference is fully armored to naked....lol.

Lets compare the armor coolness transition from early -> mid -> end game:

WoW: Shitty -> Good -> Great!

Aion: Good -> Great -> Awesome!

Of course you can use any type of skin for your high-end gear/weapon later on, but that's something else.

I know what you mean, though I think there is this "visual feeling of accomplishment" in Aion as well, but it's simply on a different scale! xD
