Getting a new GFX card. Opinions welcomed.

PhifePhife Member Posts: 229

Currently running an EVGA 8800GTS 640.  It runs the game.  That's about it.

I'd like some shine and sparkle!  More FPS would be nice too.  Therefore I'm going to be buying a new GPU in the next few weeks/months.  Any reccomendations?  At this point I'm leaning toward the GeForce 200 series, maybe the higher end of those cards.

Any recommendations from other gamers out there?  How are the 200 series cards handling this game?  400 series a better choice?  Abandon nVidia and go with ATI instead?  Opinions welcomed.  Flames are not.

I still enjoy my 4870 HD from ATI.  I was going to upgrade but there is absolutely no reason to.  The performance increase is paltry at best, and the power consumption/heat is just off the charts for how little performance gain you get.

My opinion is to get a 4870 or GTX290 range card real cheap and wait for a reason to drop a lot of money on a newer card, because as of right now that reason does not exist.

get a 460 off of newegg they are down to 180 or so

    edit after reading 2nd post*

the 400 series does less heat output, and out perform the 200 series.

I've been following this thread Link and cant really come to any conclusions.

I think this game is more CPU bound than anything. That being said, I use a GTX 260 at 1650x1080

with all options off I can run ~20 fps.

    I would check Tom's Hardware

My personal opinion is go midrange on the ati 5xxx series or nvidia 4xx series.(not sure your price range really)

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Most of the higher end graphics cards require 40 amps or 42 amps, do you have a power supply that  has the amount of needed power? Thats a big consideration.

I have a gtx 285 from nvidia and it played ff14 just fine. Anything higher then that is just going to be better.

I run a 460 and it renders beautifully.  With max settings  I average 30 fps.

Something to consider is the benchmark program is complete garbage and no indication of how a peice of hardware will perform while playing the game.

I got like 2700 something and I can run dang near full graphics with 30+ fps.  Don't trust that crappy program.  Also, being a cross platform game for ps3 it will be heavily CPU intensive.

A high 2XX card or ati 47XX card should run the game fine.  You can get these cards for 100 bucks or less in some places.  Also as someone else mentioned.  You need a beeeeeeeefy power supply for the newer cards.  You can seriously damage stuff if you don't have poper power output and the power supply is a bad one.

I say a Nvida GTX460 and above or an ATI 5830 and above will run the game just fine. Anything below you might start runnin into issues now and then.

I'm not looking to spend big (200 dollar range), just bump my system up to play the game more smoothly.  Considering I can eBay my old 8800GTS for a few bucks that might help make the price even more reasonable.

In the past I've done full upgrades in anticipation of a release only to be disappointed.  For this game I'll upgrade my GPU, because I need to anyway, but beyond that I'm trying to be realistic. A 460 card might be the way to go, cheap upgrade that packs alot of punch.

Running on a 5850 TOXIC 1 GB atm, it's pretty slick, although I can't test it at these newer mega resolutions my older monitor don't support em (only run on 1680x1050) but it's plenty good enough for me..

I surprised nobody asked you what the rest of your computer specs are and what resolution do you plan on playing at? Theres no point throwing out recommendations when he could have parts that could bottleneck  his new video card.

i think it all depends on whether you want DX11 or not.

Lets face it, how many games utilize DX10?

Take a look at the Tom's Hardware Graphics chart, it gives you a good idea of what to get.

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/graphics-cards,1.html

I would be tempted to spend the bucks on a couple of 4870's in crossfire. or if you can go that little bit further, two 4890's :D

Every single post forgot what PCI-E slot he's on. He's on a x16, and on a graphics card that was near the pinnacle of the end of PCI-E X16. If you want a new graphics card, you'll need a PCI-E X16 2.0 slot unless you have the 2.0 motherboard but bought a last generation card (which seems unlikely).

Costs soon get crazy. $200 for a Graphics card, $100 for a motherboard with a 1156 LGA, which means you need a new CPU, and possibly new Dual Channel Ram.

He who keeps his cool best wins.

That depend of your budget, so can you give use more info?

My gaming screen's resolution is 1680x1050.  Still using XP Pro so I'm limited to a max of 4G of RAM atm.  Intel duo core 2.5GHz overclocked to 3.2GHz.  Giga mobo is PCI16 Express so it should be able to handle PCI 2 Cards albeit with a small bottleneck.

Certianly not top of the line anymore although it was pretty mean 3 years ago when I built her.  Again, I'm not looking to completely revamp my PC.  I've done that before for other games and I always get burned.  Mainly looking to upgrade the GPU.  Anything above and beyond I dunno...  So far OB doesn't exactlly make me want to drop a grand or two on a new rig.

Also keep in mind that the GPU upgrade could be matched later with new mobo, RAM, etc, etc. at a later date that is PCI2.

Crossfire/SLI will give you excellent results for much less money than a single high-end card, especially since it works asymetrically now (you can use two different cards, set up one for graphics and the smaller one for physics).

I just works great, and it's a good way to upgrade one card at a time, but always for less than $200 value while getting some of the best benchmarks results.

However don't forget when ugrading your PC that MMOs are usually more CPU-intensive than typically GPU-intensive as most games are. When it comes to lagging because of dozens of players on screen, your GPU is just fine usually, however you CPU and sub-system (northbridge/RAM) isn't. At all. Keep that in mind, MMOs require very good CPUs to perform well. Better get a good quadcore @2GHz+ than the latest in GPUs for MMOs.

I plan on buying a new motherboard with crossfire to support the next card I'll buy (currently owning a HD4870 which runs the game at almost max settings @1080p, so I'm in no hurry to upgrade). However my Core2Duo@1.8GHz clearly is the limiting factor on my PC, at least for MMOs, so I'll buy a new CPU (and 2 more Gigs of RAM) before I look at graphic cards.

unless he got a really old computer that will not be a problem and if he have a old grany for pc he will not play FFXIV........
