I could go with an AH/broker type system being added as long as it allowed for a both direction exchange of both good and money like the current retainer system allows. Right now I can sell my goods for money, or trade them for other goods. I can also buy goods for money, or offer to trade what I want for something I already have. The problem with almost all AH system in games today is they only do the simple one way sell of goods for cash. And if you do that here you take away an important aspect of the interconnectivety of all classes.
Oh and to the one comment of how finding another player is more diffficult than learning all the crafts yourself...you honestly think so? I mean how difficult is it to ask for an invite into a linkshell? How hard is it to accept that invite? And once your in that linkshell, how hard is it to switch tothe 'Merchants United' linkshell and ask if someone has some rubber soles for sale? You make it sound like you would have to track down someone by travelling hundreds of miles up hill, in the snow, barefoot...every single time you needed something. Seriously, its switch active linkshell to....'HEY, ANYONE GOT SOME RUBBER SOLES FOR SALE?!?!"..."COOL, WHERE SHOULD I MEET YOU?". Yeah thats about it.
Do you see it yet? Go past the mechanical aspect of the game, go past the number crunching, get to the community, the communication, the teamwork...finding it yet? Is it really that bad of a concept? Afterall, that is the driving point behind every MMO out thee isn't it? Community, communication, teamwork, friendships...looks to me like they just want to give us tools and nudge us into what we have been telling them all for so long we want.

or, instead of trying to do everything yourself, you could simply buy the other things from players that actually make them. You know, like an economy is suppose to work which is the whole reason why FFXIV doesn't have an auction house and what SE is trying to accomplish? I swear, you people ruin Economise in MMOS by trying to be completely self-sufficent. You aren't meant to be.

I dunno. This kinda made me laugh (Sorry, don't mean to be rude). You got your "Go out and do it yourself people" and now you got your "Join a guild and work together" People.
*sigh*. I don't see any reason not to be self-sufficient. It builds character, and it allows you to have greater control over the design of your character, as well as open possibilities with linkshells/guilds that you normally wouldn't have.
Being Self-Sufficient doesn't mean being a lone wolf.

Have to agree with Xpiher, Auction Houses ruins economies. FFXIV has potential to have a really in-depth crafting system where crafters are more than just a name on a AH board. It also promotes a lot more socialization amongst the players. FFXIV ain't a solo MMORPG, many people seem to forget about this.

My point is, if you want to be completely self sufficent, then you should be willing to grind it out. If you are too lazy, then buy the stuff from other people. Thats how real life works.

I likes me some lazy people, they buy lots of stuff.

I tried searching for linkshells but most are already set with who they want and everyone else is so quiet. You dont hear a thing from anyone.
Been farming for hours now to get the wind crystals and thats only 5% of the one level 9 item. Doesnt matter though, I do get experience and lancer skill experience.
I dont think it is complicated. Just time consuming(aside from the UI).
Again I have no problem with depending on someone else to make the product so I dont have to spends days training up another skill. Its just that no one is selling or I cant find anyone selling what I need.
Auction House is seriously needed for this and other reasons as well. Player run shops in other games are chaotic at best. They cause lag, confusion, and plain old server stress in most the games I played. I remember in some games we hoped the server would crash to clear out some of the shops sitting there for 18 hours causing a queue to log in or blocking other shop signs all while creating more lag.

Its either that or be a name on some message board. Just because I buy some oil from and Alchemist doesnt mean I will socialize more than that. But It may lead to more interactions because I know he/she sells it and I begin to create a list. I find more people with other skills and after a few months I have a list of 20-30 names of people I know can make certain things.
Thus their names just become something on a list.
As a crafter myself I think an AH is perfect for me to get my name out and my products sold instead of spamming chat channels or hoping someone will click me and find the item they want. Some may want to just have their name out while some will just want to rip people off. If its a system of who you know your game experience(good/bad) will greatly depend on if the other players are nice or not.
Linkshells? Player Interaction?
Well if you think about it, this will drive more and more people to join Linkshells and not even bother with the interaction outside the linkshell beyond recruiting. This will create an enviroment that is harsh to anyone joining the game world say 4 months after release.
Its not a soloing game?
Well honestly I am soloing here much easier than I had ever did in FFXI. And that game had an AH. And again this is punishment for those stuck without a linkshell.
Communication barrier...
These servers have people playing from all over the world. Your characters hope on a good communutiy of traders/crafters could depend if people in your country chose your server or not.
One funny thing about my hardship of finding someone to buy products from is that I can speak enough Japanese to ask for these things to Japanese speaking players as well.. Still no luck :-p

No one is selling things and interaction is stiffiled because its OB. Most people are "testing the game" or are playing with guilds to figure out the best way to reach the top. I'm not just saying this about FFXIV, but all OBs I've been in have been like this, very little player communication except to smack talk in PvP.

Yes I understand that. I have seen in many betas on varying degrees. However I have seen AH full of sellers and people atleast chatting in all of hte OB I have played and I have played a lot. This is by far the worst I have seen communication really in any beta test. It was much better in FFXI but then again when I played that on the PC it was already a year after its original release.
I guess I can hope that its just because that its open beta that no one talks/helps/interacts with anything outside the linkshell. Hell Im sitting in Camp Skull Valley with about 20+ people in the area and not a one replies to a question or a simple "hello" hehe.
This compounds to problem into the current system of buying/selling.
