Crafting Sucks!

My milder titled threads just got buried, so maybe this'll work.

My main three points about why crafting sucks:

1. Long Pauses.

Open Menu, Select Synthesize. Kneel. Pause 10+ seconds. Select Ingredients(through sluggish list scrolling) Long Pause.

Craft said item (or attempt to). Long Pause. Rinse repeat.

2. Why so fail?

Sit in any crafting area, watch the botches scroll past. It seems to me there is very little player control over a fail and complete. Even with harvesting, the player has a significant amount of understood control(select the correct point twice=win)

Lvl 1 fighter fights level 1 mob...probably going to survive. Lvl 5 blacksmith attempts to create lvl 1 item, 50/50 chance.

3. Gear wear.

I need to look further into this, but crafting wears out my gear much faster than actually fighting monsters. I don't mean just my tongs and needles.

---

I really love the attention to detail in this game. I like how you can see the jewelry you are wearing on your character. I like the way the cities look. I really want to like the game. The utter frustration caused by crafting disallows it.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

It's lag. There's also lag when buying/selling at NPC. So no, Crafting doesn't "suck", it's actually a very great crafting system that actually challenge the crafter. What you experienced is lag, and has little to do with the actual Crafting.

hahaha  My friend is the same way.  He tried some crafting and rage-quit so hard.

    I'm a filthy crafting addict though. :)

    To each his own.

Isn't that really bad though in an open beta a month before release?

lagging menus this close to release is something that bothers me, but the lag has already gotten alot better and in time will be fixed.  will it be fixed at release?  I would like to say yes, but more than likely it will be better but not totally gone.

Will SE get it so the lag is totally gone? yes, the question is just when, and when it does come crafting will be fine.  I truthfully think within a few weeks of release little issues like menu lag will no longer be an issue.

On point no. 1, I don't believe it's lag per se. I think they have some sort of check built into item creation/selling/moving/trade.

I'd like to know if anyone has any success with point no. 2? It doesn't say much for a crafting system if it's significantly more luck than skill.

The available details on crafting is very vague at the moment, and so far there have only been theorycrafting. But it is more luck than skill, in the way of understanding all the different colors and sparks during the crafting process. But you have to ask yourself however, how much "skill" do you expect a crafting system to require? Knowing when to wait and when to use the different synthesis options is as skill based as it's gonna get.

I think he mean the skill level of the craft. Not player skill...

I didnt crafted much but I nearly never failed crafting something if the receipt was  of the same or lower level than my crafting skill. If you fail 1 item on 2 then you are doing something really wrong.

Oh, and just for info, the level of an armor/weapon has nothing to do with the level of the craft receipt. Dont just assume that a level 1 sword is a level 1 receipt.

I tried crafting and the whole Standard, Bold, Rapid, Wait thing confused the crap out of me. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I press Standard and I lose durability, the I press it again and gain progress. Bold is suppose to make you gain durability but I lose it. Rapid is suppose to raise progress but it barely does anything.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I've been trying to make a straw hat for over an hour, and wasting all of my earth and wind crystals in the progress, but I still do not have a staw hat.

Hopefully, there will be a strong crafting community on release so that I can just buy this stuff. Let someone else, who likes it, get aggravated.

This is completely wrong. You should read up a little on crafting though. Everything you do lowers your durability, Standard raises quality and progress at a regular/standard pace. While Rapid has the most progress but lowest quality increase , and Bold is the opposite of rapid with a big decrease in durability.

So it's completely random? I mean if everything lowers durability, how do you make something? Is it all based on pure luck?

I'm just really curious because I spent about an hour trying to make a straw hat and failing every time. If SE wanted to make an interactive crafting experience, they should look in on EQII. At least in EQII you somewhat have control over the crafting process.

Just read up on crafting. There are many factors that affect the outcome of the craft, wether it is the color of the "gem" when crafting, from the quality of the items you use or from your Crafter Level. It's a very in-depth system that rewards good crafters.

Well, I never liked crafting in any MMO I've played. Just wanted to try it in this one just to see how it is. Like I said before, hopefully there will be a strong enough crafting community within the game so that I can avoid it.

I am going to read up on it either way.

From my experience of crafting in ffxiv and reading posts, durability is like a counter on how many attempts you have left to craft. The whole idea is to hit 100% progress before your durability runs out. I'm guessing the higher quality the item, the better your item will be when it is completed.

If you choose rapid, your progression will go up faster, your durability decreases at a slower rate, and your quality will go up at a slower rate.

If you choose bold, your progression increases at a slower rate and durability decreases at  a higher rate, but quality will also increase at a higher rate.

Standard is the inbetween of rapid and bold.

Your chances of success is dependant on the colour of the orb. From what I've read, and done (although i haven't crafted much due to lack of shards/crystals). solid white (with the exception of the starting one), means a good chance of success. So choose bold for quality, or standard.

Flashing is average, so you can wait to see if it changes to a solid colour, or try rapid, because if it fails, your durability decrease is minimal.

I've read that red/orange means that its low chance of success, so you should try wait it out.

The sparkles means elements becomes unstabled. And you should try a standard to stabalise it. A heavy sparkle means it close to breaking, so usually another failure or two will mean it breaks and you are unsuccessful (no matter what your durability is)

crafty actually is very fun in FFXIV if you got a good pc with good internet connection. all call dynamic. everything is dynamic. your quest reward is dynamic, the item you craft is dynamic. you can get very good reward if crafted high quality item.
