It is funny that you mention SOE, because they have (or at least did when I was still playing) the best spam filter in EQ2 I had ever seen.  Virtually nothing got through.  SOE could make a fortune selling there filtering portion of the program to other developers.  You know, developers like SE.  :)

Anywho, to answer your question, there's probably two things Square-Enix plans to do with the spammers:

    1. When the game goes retail in a week, they'll need an account with a registered key to get in.  This isn't a F2P game, there's no trials that I'm aware of, so this alone should cut the spam dramatically.  While beta is going on, however, you can get as many keys as you can register accounts for.

    2. This won't eliminate them entirely because the spammers wil still hack accounts with registered keys of people whose passwords suck.  Those accounts will be banned by GMs as fast as they can.

Because, really, what else can they do?

As a player, there is one thing you can do.  /blist and add their name to it.  Viola, problem temporarily solved.

Well being able to communicate in a language is a bit simple, so its likely SE will add an encryption mechanism.  You'll need learn the cypher to be able translate what everyone says.  Game's so hardcore ;)

Seriously though, the only way they'll be able to deal with spam is to moderate.  So expect it to continue, as no MMO has solved the problem, at least long term.

Whenever they start up spamming I do a /blacklist, and they I do a shout "slash blacklist".

The problem here is that you are assuming the gold farmers are honest people.  They aren't.  It is my understanding that what they usually do is purchase the game with stolen credit cards, so they actually do get a registered game.  This is one reason it makes them so difficult to ban.  The developer has to be absolutely positive the purchase was fraudulent and the account holder is indeed a real gold farmer.  They can't just ban them on suspicion.

If you look at point #2, you can see I was well-aware they'd get their accounts through less honest means, so how you took that to mean I assumed they're honest people is whacked.  (In fact, I'm as anti-gold farmer as you can get, to the point that if there was a bill to have gold farmers' hands cut off at the wrist IRL, perhaps threatening world peace if this involved trespassing into China to achieve, I'd probably vote in favor of it.  Not even because they commit crimes to operate, just on the basis of overzealous gamer purism alone.)

However, even knowing that they'll be getting accounts through dishonest means, you'll still see a reduction of accounts because using stolen credit cards is considerably more risky and tricky to pull off than just signing up for more accounts through the beta or trial page.

Good news is the /shout isnt' a very large area of effect, so it keeps those spammers to very small areas where they need /blist. Another good point is the 3 characters per account, that means the gold farmers will not be bale to market to entire game worlds on one account, more like 3 base camps per account. The use of linkshells for communications helps even more (noone I know is going to knowingly invite a gold spammer to thier linkshell). SE has at least done thier homework on ways to design the game to make this problem have an extremely minimal impact.

Now to the quesiton of will they stop them from playing?? Well, SE will be getting payed every month for every account the farmers use, call it an advertising fee. :) And as long as fools dont go around buying like crazy from them, they wont stick around long. With the fact most of the 'hardcore' or instant gratification players aren't planning on playing this game, I'm going to doubt much will be sold. I mean come on, whats more important in todays economic times 50k gill so you can buy a new shirt in a game, or gas in your car for the next week? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the expected community of FFXIV would probably go with the gas and spend the week farming thier own 50k gil in game.

(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

S E will just tell you to black list them. Thats pretty much why we have the feature and was their main defense against in in FFXI for over 8 years.

I just hate having to type every letter for a first and last name. we need a simple feature to click the name and choose too report and black list them..

the main source of gold seller accounts are bought using stolen cc numbers when people use their cc to buy in game currency.  do you really think people that break the game contract by selling you something they arent allowed to arent going to take your cc number and screw you over that way as well?  they also load keyloggers on your pc when you visit their websites and click things like the checkout buttons, this gets them your login and password, and they can loot the account and use it to spam.

remember rule number 1, supply and demand, if you stop buying what theyre selling, theyll move on.  anyone caught buying in game currency should be banned for life, have their isp notified so they lose their internet.

Remember the Aion launch? This game is going to be far, far worse. It wont surprise me if the chat servers crash all day due to gold spam.

Yeah, sorry about that.  I wasn't meaning to imply that you weren't aware of it.  I got fixated on point 1 and after I posted and reread it I realized it sounded kinda dumb.  I was more meaning to imply that in general, I don't believe people are aware of the kind of damage they are doing when they buy from these guys.  They are not only supporting fraud, but they are costing the developers / publishers money from the lost sale of the box or download and possible credit card backcharges.  Not to mention all of the costs associated with paying their own employees to battle this problem.

    Turn off shouting. Problem fixed.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Just FYI, for the retail version it is actually only 1 character per account.  Each extra character costs $3.00 each up to a total of 8.  It is 3 characters for OB only.

    This.

    Also, black list them.

Isn't it great this game doesn't have a general chat or a trade chat they can spam too?

Dont' forget folks SE has a Special Task Force dedicated JUST to combating RMT, the only company that actually cares enough to do something about gold selling.
