Nice Recap of the Event Panel from PAX. There is also a video of that panel on gwguru.

Hmm does this only apply to events?

If i was to kill a mob without being in an event will I get loot or Karma?

You will get loot from normal mobs, dont know if you would get karma rewards from it though.

But killing a mob which is chained to an event will give you karma rewards. Basicly any kind of participation in an event will give you karma, xp and gold.

This game keeps sounding better and better with every tidbit of information we get. Anet also seems to be holding up on their promises to so far which is encouraging.

I think you will only get karma for events because it reprisents the quest reward. Like when a npc remembers that you did something for him and he gives you something in return.

Thanks for the article; gave me a more detailed description of how these dynamic events will actually work than I've seen so far.  Like others posting here, I am really, really looking forward to this game.  I love the public quests in Warhammer Online, particularly the way I can log on and immediately feel part of a group effort without having to do the whole lfg thing.

The karma system sounds good, too, and yes, it might be similar to Warhammer's renown system, but I would prefer to receive rewards based on my actions in game rather than doing an instance and hoping for stuff to drop.

Arenanet seem to have thought long and hard about these dynamic events, it was particularly interesting to read that they started off with this idea and GW2 developed around it.  I'm sure the game will have some flaws because nothing is perfect, but overall the developers'  focus on fun, community interaction and dynamic immersion in the gameworld is exactly what I (and lots of other people, it seems) are looking for.

p.s.  Thanks for the video link, really interesting.

    • The need to heal an injured solider, cure poison, etc (to move into the next phase of an event)

That right that is the first quest in the demo they showed off. After you left the main city an NPC runs up to you and states the Centaurs are attacking the villiage and that some of the villagers are in danger. At that point you go find 4 frightened villagers and tell them to head to the Inn. After thats done you head to the inn to check on them and an NPC talks about the Centaur attack and encorages you to help killing some. Later in the event you are told that they are attacking the fort. You go to the fort to fight some more off and then fight the centaur champion. The champion, after taking a beating runs off with you in chase and summons a gigantic earth elemental. You take down the earth elemental and it releases an explosion knocking you out. You then wake up in the main cities clinic.

So yes the events seem to start off small then gets bigger and bigger as you work your way through it.

I hope that there is some benefit in both outcomes of events. Doesn't sound like much fun if you only get rewarded for doing things one way. Why would anyone ever choose not to help the villagers and let them all die.

  • The mathematician in me is still trying to understand the range of behaviours the underlying event network is capable of. It sounds more and more though as if some of the event chains are connected some of the time, which implies complex and unpredictable patterns of event "states" are possible. God, I'd love to be privy to some of the discussions taking place at Anet as they play test their world.
