WASD

I have a great idea!

I was playing Final Fantasy 14 beta and I got this crazy idea. If you're a FF11 fan then hear me out before you go off hating on me because this is a bit out there...

What if the devs added the OPTION to use WASD and the mouse to control character movement? This is hard to explain in a forum but what if W made you walk forward, A made you walk (or strafe!) left, S would be backing up, D would be moving right and then the mouse would control camera angle... or maybe even let you turn if you did something like click the right button.

I don't know... I just had this crazy idea and thought I'd see what other people thought about it. I know that the game is pretty far into its development phase but this could be the feature that makes FF14 a WoW killer.

Any thoughts or ways to improve on this?

While I appreciate and enjoy your sarcasm, imo, the sooner you put both hands on the keyboard and get used to it, the better.  Initially awkard, yep.  Big deal after you're used to it, nope.

Analog controls with my 360 gamepad are much better and allow more precise movement.

There are many ways to control the way you can play a game.

Keyboard only has advantages in that you have so many keys to press, but it is actually not a true gaming device as it was designed to be used to type, not to game, it sucks for movement since you can't have analog control or 360 degress of control like you can with a thumbstick, etc.

Gamepad has much better controls in terms of moving your character around and the camera. Also most of the time you can hit keys faster on a gamepad as you don't have to reach for any keys.

Mouse allows you to zoom in and click things quickly, precision when moving around inventory, etc.

These are just examples, but my point is, you have OPTIONS, choose the way you like to play, none is the right way or ONLY way the game shoudl be played.

    GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

I don't know what you've heard or how you've been playing the game, but it's already in and works exactly like thisHere is a link that shows the official control diagrams.

W forward, S backwards, A turn left, D turn right.  It might even strafe on left and right if the right mouse button is down, as is standard in other MMORPGs, but I don't readily recollect at this time.  Holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse will move the camera angle.   Take one guess what using the mousewheel will do.

The complaints you have heard about the mouse mostly have to do with accessing the menus with them, which is very cumbersome and problematic with the jumpy, software mouse, but apparently the devs say hardware mouse will be in at release.  In the current state, you will want to use keyboard or gamepad for menu manipulation.  However, even in its current state, the mouse works quite well for scrolling your camera while moving about.

Honestly, if you're going to be a wise ass, at least do your research first.

Now if only they let us zoom out a little bit more, that would be super. I feel like I'm a little too close behind the character when I'm using my gamepad.

Zoom can be changed with either mousewheel scroll or the PgUp/PgDown keys.  However, maybe you already know this and are saying you wish you could zoom out even further than the maximum zoom out.
