Happened upon a Square site tonight - got to thinking

Initial thought is borderline OT... but it's Square related so maybe it will get by. Tactics Ogre re-release for PSP coming in Nov.

Has the title music from Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen - ahh nostalgia :)

Anyone remember Ogre Battle? What was your first platform? SNES, PS or N64?

I had it on SNES originally and picked up PS version as a collectible must have.

One thing I would really like to see in an online game like FF14 would be a Ogre Battle/FF Tactics style minigame played against other players. Something kind of like Legends of Norrath on a much larger scale, with observation ability like Guild Wars.

Sometimes I feel MMORPG developers are not pushing the envelope with what's possible or wanted. It seems we could have so many more types of gameplay than current staples. Why don't we have cooler gladiator arena types of gameplay? (sure WoW has arena but I want something with spectators, voting, risk.) Add PvE arenas like a team of 4 players versus waves of tougher monsters, spectactors could be placed in raffles or given some other kind of bonus for watching (participating).

Or how about a functional Battle Chess board in a tavern? We have a shopping mall nearby with a large chess board on the floor, pieces stand about 2 feet or so. I always see lots of spectactors just watching the players. Not like I chat with everyone but it sure gives a warm community feeling while we watch.

How many folks would run by a active chess match in a game tavern and think "that is cool!"? Maybe stop and watch for a bit, stop and play a game of chess. Feel immersed in the world. Feel like you were participating in different ways than just casting fireball or provoke.

In a game downtime to observe can be nice - thinking back to SWG cantinas there was downtime just watching the entertainer's and shooting BS with others. It was fun - an enjoyable snack so to speak. Yet, added so much to the overall experience.

I agree with a lot of this.  The thing is cost of development without sustaining it with a released MMO and healthy playerbase.  Things like this can be added to a core game like FFXIV after release.  FFXI added chocobo raising/racing, monster catching and arena battling with those monsters, companions, etc.  WoW added Battlegrounds, Arena, etc.

Hopefully we see a lot more innovation with features and things we can do to have fun.  It doesn't look like any on the horizon are doing much different from the norm besides FFXIV, and hopefully World of Darkness.

I would love to see an in game trading card game similar to what is in VIII.  I would love to see an in game PvP sport like Blitzball too.  I am sure we will see some interesting features in this game, and hopefully in a few more MMO's in the future.  A tactics chess like game would rock.

While I like the post might want to bring it up on the main board because this is just a small forum for a good pvp topic (yes chess in game would be pvp) and since FFXIV has none its pointless. But yes your ideas make sense to me too chess or not mini PvP adds to the game. Somthing like what you are suggesting doesn't sound bad at all the only major issue is getting developers to put in that type of  perk. Alot of times it seems that with all the other things they have to do they forget about some of the really cool simple hings they could do to improve their games.
