Often CGI movies attempt to display gameplay elements in a story scenario. WAR, WoW come to mind first but seen it occur in others as well.
Now based on that. How accurate do you think the CGI trailer is in terms of gameplay?

Not thinking at launch but down the road of course, no MMO seems to contain everything the dev intended during planning.
Guild leve examples, which is funnny as previously when they showed snippets of trailer I thought they were tarot cards or something.
I see battle regiments - Conj casting fire buff on archer. Staple Tank, Melee DPS, Healer, Magic DPS examples. Limb damage, which is documented as in.
In the video you also see flying. What do you think? Crafting is confirmed to have boat creation so... are they thinking airships?
Hmm my own airship - perhaps as a housing choice.

It's significantly overblown, of course, the quasi-turn based gameplay is no ultimate visceral combat experience...
However, it's nonetheless an awesome representation of what the developers would like to do.
To the point where if you didn't already write this up, I was going to post a thread titled, "your argument is irrelevant: the opening trailer is awesome." Somewhat tongue-in-cheek, of course.
I really like the official trailer, it's gorgeous!
I can't wait to see the improvement in the final product & experience the vision SE is giving us of a world called Hydaelyn.
It's an awesome trailer indeed which makes the reality all the more bitter because as much as i'd like the gameplay to be even remotely like the trailer, it's quite the opposite really. If i didn't knew the game already and bought the game because of this gorgeous trailer i'd feel seriously cheated.
Ah so you see CG trailers and expect games to be CG then? This really isn't the game for you. There are some games that do trailers with the in game engine entirely maybe that will make you have realistic expectations.
One cool thing is the way they fight that Marlboro and attack parts of his body applies to the combat system in that fighting a Marlboro allows you to target parts of its body and disable parts of its offense and even remove limbs. Very cool
How could you have tryed it if theres isnt half the content or the working mechanics right now on beta to try thins at this scale ?
And im not talking bout the graphics, im talking about game play.
That my friend is how is going to be down the road.
My feelings exactly.
I honestly felt shivers down my spine when i saw the malboro fight and when the guys were just siting around discussing what guild level to do.
Of course not. But i expect trailers do give a slight reflection of things that i'll actually be doing once i'm in the game. It's not about CGI, it's about the viscerality the trailer suggests, which is exactly the thing FF XIVs battlesystem is sorely missing.
I liked the trailer, its was pretty. But I thought it would explain some of the story to me, hehe. It might have, maybe im just slow. Anyone got some story ideas from the opening CGI? What happened? Did he go back in time or get teleported? Or was it just like ....ummm... an "epiphany" , where he just foresaw what it could be like?

The 3 nations battling the empire in a huge sky battle and awoke Bahamut during the battle? And then the massive explosion of the Empire airship caused bahamut? to break into all the avatars we know and love.
What be your theory?

Oh man. It is embedded in my brain, but damn was it nice watching it again. Thanks for that.
I believe time travel may be involved. The dragon crashing the ship is a landmark in the game. Ishgard, the 4th city, is a dragon fighting nation where I believe all 3 nations will converge. The dragon fighting ships and fleets are likely from Ishgard.
The leve he goes on is likely a path that leads him to his destiny, and it may be in the past leading to those events or a flashback of the past. There will be Marlboro's in game and the ability to target different parts of their body for a more strategic boss like battle.
I see hmmm. Yah the dragon blowing up into other summons was interesting. I guess im just lost. Ill have to wait and see.

Sorry, but this point is clearly just nagging and wanting to talk negatively about FFXIV: if you see the CGI trailers released for WoW, GW's Nightfall, EQ2, FFXI, Tabula Rasa and other MMO's, they were equally just moodsetters for their respective MMO's, with a disconnect between CGI and the actual gameplay.
i have a general question, the scenes pictured in the trailer, are they a presentation of situations that we'll encounter in FFXIV (like the battle between the dragons and that army) or was it a part of FFXIV's world history, things that happened in Eorzea's past?

That is yet to be determined, but I believe it is the past. That big Galka that is fighting the Marlboro I believe is the captain of the ship in the Limsa Lominsa opening, but older and later in the story. I would have to compare to see if they were exactly the same and showed aging in one or the other or a scar, but I believe it to be the past and we will come across these adventurers throughout the store, or possibly travel through time.
I have this feeling or prediction though. I think maybe the main guy changes after the video, and goes on to lead the Garlean Empire or become a main enemy.. maybe. Just my mind wandering.
The only thing I know for sure is the dragon wrapped around the ship is a landmark in Eorzea so that event is the past.
Ah, it has become a location? Can you point out where it lies, or do you have a source link?

All of the stuff in the trailer is in the game.
1. Guildleves
2. Effing huge Marlboro mobs (yes they are that big in the game)
3. You can sever limbs, cut of heads of undead (to get a special item) and much more depending on positioning and weapons used. Tactics are important, VERY important.
4. You can combine skills just like the mage put fire on the arrows. This is confirmed and working. The effect these combo's will have are essential to winning battles. (eg. defense down, magic defense down and many more)
5. There are airships and you can build boats and many more huge projects like cannons. Thats what the new "Mega Guild" called a Company is for.
6. The crashed airship and the dragon are in the game in a high level zone. Here are screenshots for you:

Would you kindly stop trolling and get your facts straight?
The closest we got to that was Dynamis and then that lag infested besieged lol.
@taus01 - I think the trailer gives you a good idea of all the things included in the game. Just like the list you posted. The trailer covers all the basics that are included.

However, no need to bash the other guy and accuse him of trolling. He was just stating his opinion. If you expected a literal translation into gameplay you are not going to get it. Meaning, you are not going to run up the limbs of a marlboro. You aren't going to jump up onto a rock and cast a spell. You aren't going to dodge visibly on your screen. You aren't going to get picked up into the air by a marlboro either. If someone was literally expecting to do all of those things based on the cgi, then yes they would be disappointed. So this guy does have a valid point.
So to recap, if you expect to be able to jump, dodge, run up marlboro limbs, and get tossed about based on the video then yeah you would be disappointed. (How many people take cgi combat literally...that is another question)

The only past game that I know where you could see similar things was Gods and Heroes. Your avatar would get picked up and tossed about. Too bad that game died in beta. I know a new company is trying to bring it back, but I think it may be past it's time. The closest game to this type of combat gameplay offered now is Vindictus which entered OB today.
