Does anyone know if it will be possible to use a PS3 controller to help navigate your character as well as menus while also using a keyboard (or mic set depending) for communication for the PC version?

I use this: http://www.motioninjoy.com/download
So you gotta connect the controller to your computer with the usb cable (gotta take in mind that you have to boot the computer with disabled driver signature in 64bit in order for it to work tho, to do this you gotta press F8 after the BIOS screen).
I use it myself and it works flawlessly, the game actually plays alot easier with controller than with mouse and keyboard.
I hope that helps
EDIT: oh and obviously you gotta set up the controller in your FFXIV config, just in case you didn't know.
And also remember to set up the controller in the driver as a controller with analog sticks enabled.
Driver Signature Enforcement. You can reboot the machine and press F8 for the boot options menu and chose to disable there or you can disable it permanently in the OS. I think the WIKI page gives you instructions. If you don't disable you see the motioninjoy device as a ? in device manager. It does work reasonably well after correctly configuring.
Thanks, I think alot of people would really benefit from this if it got out there that you can use a ps3 controller on the PC.

I got a Nyko Core PS3 controller offbrand from wal-mart to work right out of the box on windows 7.
I have also not heard of anyone having problems with a 360 controller, I just don't like 360 controllers.
You do have to set up the controller using a separated config program outside of the game. It should be in your start menu.
All die, so die well.
A $15 logitech dual action works out of the box as well on the pc. I use it to play my ps1 and 2 games.
