I am not talking about the walls that mark worlds end but the ones that prevent you from going to close to a cliff.
In FFXIV for example you can have beautifull panoramas but when you approach to close to a cliff, BAM ... invisible wall.
There was a case where I saw a mine in a valley, but there was no way of getting there EXCEPT by using a predefined pathway SE designed for us to get there. Only 1 way. Other games give you the freedom of exploring the world and looking for alternate ways to get to a certain point.
In AOC for example I would jump of cliffs, 1 rock at a time, even using trees, and find another way down. Sometimes I would get hurt, or even die, but I did find other ways of getting somewhere.
I like this freedom, I like to make my own choices in how to reach a certain point. These walls seem to treat me like a child, force me where to go in the world. It also feels like they make the world smaller.
There are people who say, but yes those walls are there to protect you, it prevents people from suiciding down a cliff. They went as far to say that people would even complain that they were not protected from running over that cliff. That it's the designers fault if they would die by not implementing them.
I for one think that this is bullocks, coz in real life your not goin to run blindly into a cliff either. But hey everyone has an oppionion, so what is yours?

If you're used to something in one game, it is sometimes nice when this feature is there in another game. Personally I do like to have the option to jump around/crawl down large cliffs when out exploring etc. - I mean in some games you even have spells to assist in slow fall from heights (featherfall etc.) but in other games this may be there for a reason, design/aethetic so I appreciate the designer's rules for a game world and go with them. Whilst it would be nice to have a fully explorable world in place, there's probably a valid reason from the game creator's perspective so it's not a deal breaker by any means.
Imo, invisible walls and lack of freedom, predefined paths, no jumping etc etc are developers laziness, choosing the easyest fastest cheapest way of coding the game...I HATE IT.
BUT BEHOLD! in the FF14 trailer they had this girl just jumping and hopping about on horse wagons and shit, it was like "a look it here, you cant do what I can do hahahaha... hmm I be so mean buhehehe bye bye" just pure bs!
If we can not jump in game don't show us a trailer with a charater jumping with flowing ease and then wave.
This IS something that caused me a small twinge of annoyance. It's an open area and I want to go THERE....but can't. GRRRR! That said, it's not a game breaker but rather a grumble issue.
Necessary or cramping my style?
Both.
