Update on the new Build from Epic Games
As described on our forums we have just merged into a new updated build from Epic Games China, including the latest build of Unreal Engine 3.
What we are doing at the moment is extensive testing of the new build before we are going live with it. So far it’s been going pretty smooth and it’s a much easier merge than our last major merge we did before release. This build is vital for our game as it solves a few issues players are experiencing today.
What this new update gives us is the following:
• Updated visuals overall in Mortal Online
• New trees and vegetation including SpeedTree 5.2 support. (We need to evaluate this some more before fully going over to ST, to see how it impacts the performance.) You will still get new tree models even without SpeedTree enabled.
• Better server stability and performance, we can now support a few more thousands of players simultaneously.
• A fully working prediction/interpolation system which will make player position updates and combat moves much more accurate
• A new lightning and shadow system which should look better than what we use today, and the performance should be much better
• Flash support. The old GUI will eventually be phased out and replaced with a new one. This will significantly increase the speed and response time, it will enable us to make it much more coherent and informative, not to mention it will look a lot better.
We will also add a few things included in the above patch such as bug fixes and the next iteration of the fishing system for instance. It’s still hard to give an exact date for this patch, but we aim to test it live within 2-3 weeks. We will update under development section as soon as we have a bit more accurate date.
Overall status report
We are going to have one last patch on our old build before we go over to this new build. This patch is supposed to solve any skill issues we have had once and for all. For you who are suffering from any skill bug, please take the opportunity to login to test to see if it’s fully solved, we plan to do this test tomorrow and it shouldn’t take more than one hour. Look on our forums for more information on this. To solve the rest of our current issues we have to move over to the new build.
It’s been two months of struggling and hard work for the team, but we believe you will notice the difference in the game in a positive way with our coming patches. We are as always grateful for your patience and support of our game. This has of course also affected you, the players, in terms of bugs and some annoying moments. We want to thank you again for the great feedback you are giving us. As soon as we have this new build in place and solved the issues we have left we will also start marketing for the first time in a larger scale. This means you have got a good head start before the masses of new players starts to enter the world of Nave, which is a great strength in a competitive sandbox game like Mortal Online. It’s too early to say if we are to compensate the first players in any way, we do what we can with still limited resources. And like we explained there were not many options for us to choose from when releasing the game. We wanted to stay independent and deliver the Mortal Online game core we have promoting since the beginning.
Dev blog and video
Our Creature Artist, Erik Lindgren, was supposed to write the new dev blog. Unfortunately he’s ill so Mats is writing in his place this time. Erik has been with us since day one and has built pretty much all of our creatures, and the blog features a short video where you’ll be able to see a few of his pieces in their original, highly detailed versions. This is how all our original in-game models look like before we convert them into low resolution models and put them into the game. We will be able to show the details of our models in-game a lot better when we enable high resolution textures, which we will be able to do very soon with this new build. Hopefully sometime in the future we will also have some time to enable and utilize DirectX 11, also included in the new build, which supports the actual high resolution meshes (models) at very close range. DirectX 11 supports dynamical adjustment of the resolution of meshes depending on distance. This setting would of course require a DX 11 card, and overall performance is the factor that will determine if this will be possible in our game or not. Read the blog and check out the show reel here.
Don’t miss tonight’s Q&A on IRC since the last weeks’s House of Commons chat did not occur!
Today at 09.00 GMT +1, Henrik Nyström (CEO) will be on IRC to answer your questions!

So the Epic patch is coming with Epic improvements The predicition system will definately have a huge impact on the larger scale PvP combined with better graphics will be win.
When the regulars have nothing bad to say here or @ the official forums you know it's good.
No. It just means they've left, don't care anymore, or both. Starvault blamed everything on "waiting for Epics patch". Well, now they have Epic's patch. So let's see what they blame it all on next.
All this is, is a way to stall for the next 2-3 weeks or longer before they have to think up the next excuse.

Yes, this is very good if they implement it correctly. I am really interested to see the improvements that are made with this new build.
Exactly... besides.. what is linked above is a "wish list" of what the "plan to do"... very similar the the previous 100 "wish lists" that came before promising to fix everything in the game. If anyone doubts this they need only go back to last year. People were saying the exact same stuff in Dec that they are saying now. "The game just needs 3 months", "The next patch will fix XXX"... Now we are 10 months later and we still hear "The game just needs 3 months", "The next patch will fix XXX"....

Are they going to offer a free trial when the update comes out? With all the bad PR about this game it would seem in order.
Except this is not just a patch. This is a totally updated and new build to the engine itself. Meaning this is not just little fixes here and there. This is a HUGE make or break patch. Also this build is from Epic and in my book Epic is a trusted company that I like a lot.
And as I said.. if you look back.. this is not the first time we have heard this about an "Epic Patch"... The last upgrade to 3.5 was similarly touted as the savior..

I really hope this goes well for MO, indie devs making sandbox mmo's should be praised, f*ck these big corporation theme-park mmo's!
No I am not calling this patch an Epic patch I am talking about the company Epic. From my understanding this latest build came from Epic China which is said in the article. Basically Epic people helped fixed whatever was wrong and also updated the Unreal 3 Engine. Then they sent it to SV.
Do you understand what I am saying now?
Yes.. I understand EXACTLY what you are sayng.. however.. I think you are not following ME...
This is not the first time SV has told us they are getting an "epic" patch from Epic Games. If you looks back a few months... This exact same situation accured around launch. It was delayed so that Epic Games could get them their wonderful new version that was going to fix "whatever was wrong".
If this was the first time such a thingw as promised I could see where you were going.. but it's not.. this is the same stuff that was said months ago...

It did? I have not heard any complaints about the dsync or whatever it was that was making the server crash every couple of mins. That is from my understanding what the patch from Epic was to fix. Also it is to my understanding after that patch came out the game was much more playable then it was so with that trend in mind maybe this new Epic patch will make the game even more playable. Yes, the game is in a horrible state but it is in a much better state then it was at release. You gotta see past all the crap that needs to be fixed and see how it used to be and how much it actually has improved.
I want you to take note of the current state of the game. Once this patch comes out, I want you to pull out those notes and compare. If there is no improvements then you can troll about this game as long as you want. However if there is an improvements visually and also gameplay wise. I want you to make a new thread saying that you were wrong to judge this game and that you think this game is a great game for sandbox players.
So if they slightly improve anything visually and gameplay wise it would suddenly become "a great game for sandbox players"? Umm... I don't think that's right but I will make you a deal. If this patch comes and breaks anything you can take note of this thread.. and make a new thread saying that you think it's the worst game ever for sandbox players. Sound fair?
And if it doesn't break anything I will do as you suggest!
Deal?

I am not talking about slight improvements to the game. I am talking about noticeable improvements to the game, but from how you talk should not be a problem because that never happens with each patch even slightly. Also the deal you are making is impossible to win. Every patch released in any newly released mmo breaks something else. It is like common sense that something is bound to break with a new patch coming out.
Don't make a deal with the devil...
It is VERY common for a patch in any mmo to create a new bug. It's a simple part of MMO gaming.
What the OP is posting about is the tremendous improvements that are going to be implemented fairly shortly. Basically every gripe that was in Saraphinas hit piece will be addressed and fixed.
Mortal Online only gets better with every patch.

And this is the same stuff that was said 3 months ago at launch.. and 3 months before that with the March delay... and 3 months before that. You can honestly go back and look through these forums and you will find thread after thread (months and months) of people praising the "next" patch from SV and how it's turning the corner and getting better etc...
The only difference now is that the folks making those posts have given up and moved on to other games...
So yeah.. on topic.. it's great to have a new list of promises. You know what they say... "Hope springs eternal..."
Guess we will see if the next patch really fixes the game this time...

And with each patch my statement you quoted only gets confirmed....
There have been players that left to play other games but as you can tell by the fact there's 130 people in a SURPRISE house of commons chat right now there is still a avid following for mortal online and one that grows with the game, much like Eve's playerbase. There are more people in this surprise chat with a developer than any other games irc room.
In terms of population Henrik let this little tidbit slip out in a news post.
"• Better server stability and performance, we can now support a few more thousands of players simultaneously."
http://www.mortalonline.com/news/newsletter-september-2010-09-16
Sounds like a bit more than the 75 concurrent players on the mortal online server that some people have reported on these forums....

The last Epic patch promised to remove the desync. It did exactly that. The Epic patches are made by an external 3rd party company whom SV pay a lot to use their engine. So yes they will deliver good just like they did the last Epic patch, Mr Nystrom has already confirmed their on the testing phase after merging it with their current version.
To claim they said the last Epic patch would fix anything this one is going to would be pure lies.
Wow......130 people = an "avid following".
Okay, then.
And please, stop insulting EVE by trying to associate MO in any way to it. That's just disgustingly wrong.

When you're given a few hours warning it's hard to be there. Try throwing a HUGE party but telling everyone a day in advance. See what happens.
Eve is the absolute best comparason out there, Eve too struggled upon launch.
You kind of remind me of the idiocy of Derek Smart, MO is and never will be a perfect or awesome game, but it has the opportunity to do what DF failed to do. You think EVE was perfect at launch? NO I was an alpha tester, beta tester, and played the game after launch for 5 years, I watched that game go from total shit, to good, to crap, to utter shit again where it sits now. I guarantee if MO is still running within a year from now you will be playing it or giving it a chance. Stop being such a troll and see what SV is trying to do.
...and no I do not play MO.
loved that one ! my ribs still hurt from how hard I laughed.
I wonder if anyone actually asked a question about that one in the Henrick chat today. That would really be "Epic"...
