I had assumed that the servers for the NA release would be located in NA, but I read a thread yesterday where someone said they were all in Japan.
Is this true?

All the primary servers are located in Japan. All nations play on the same servers. However, there are "hubs" in America that link directly to these servers. Hope that helps.
Yes, it is true, although I believe the same was true for FFXI and I never had a problem really with latency.
Connections in general seem pretty bad in beta but I believe they'll be able to fix that using stress-test results from beta.
Connections during beta for the patcher were horrible, but once you got in game connections were fine.
only reason I mentioned it, was today my casting on my thurmaturge was a pain.
Id cast an attack spell, cool down drops, I cast again, it says its not ready. Or, I click cast, nothing happens, mob instantly dies.
First bit of latency I've had with the game, but was a concern.
That has been going on a good bit with the stress testing. Hopefully they will have it fixed for release.
