Rift: Planes of Telara: The Kelari

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Rift: Planes of Telara devs have revealed the latest race and the lore behind it. Called the Kelari, this group worked in secrete amongst the High Elves for a long while, seeing the devotion to Tavril as a burden. As the eons passed, the Kelari represent the Defiants and see themselves as equal to, rather than beneath, the gods. Check out a bit of lore and a couple of screens about the Kelari.

The Kelari are no friends to the High Elves or their Guardian allies. Truth be told, they had not traditionally been friends of any other race, and many Defiant protested trusting the Kelari. The Bahmi were particularly vocal in this regard, until they were silenced by a reminder of their Oath of Hospitality. The Kelari bring to the Defiant a fitting sort of spiritualism. While the Eth explored forbidden technology, and the Bahmi honed their bodies to physical perfection, the Kelari were making pacts with mighty magical beings, trading services for power.

This spiritual fervor has easily transferred to a passion for magitech among the young Kelari, who have proven valuable in magitech workshops, despite the grousing of older Elves. Of course, a Kelari is much more likely to simply try out “what might work” than conduct careful experiments, so the Eth grow somewhat nervous when their Elven allies handle machinery.

Find our more about the Kelari here.

I like to play elves...but then again if a game comes along without them I won't shed many tears!

Hey look more elves. Hopefully they are getting more creative and original with other races since right now it's just three different types of humans, 2 types of elves and creepy looking dwarves.

    Found my race.

    Elves are boring u_u

I see alot of people talking about being creative with "their other races". People, the Kelari is the last race announced. All 6 have been announced. There will be no more for launch. Maybe in an expansion, but 6 is the number of the counting, not 5, not 7.

I still don't know  which I'm going to play from the Defiant side. All of them have nice racial bonuses.

At the risk of being called a troll, I'll say that I wouldn't expect this game to reinvent the genre.  This game seems to be designed and marketed toward people who believe EQ1 was the zenith of online gaming.

I wouldn't call you a troll for saying that. I'd say that it looks like you are trying to spin a neutral into a hit against the game (in the context of how it is used most times on this site). *shrug*

Trion never said they were trying to reinvent the genre. That said, they are doing one or two things that are unique to their game and that if done right will be fun. Indeed, most folks who have had hands on with them have said that are in fact fun. So with a full beta phase of testing to further refine a highly polished  alpha build we will hopefully have an MMO that was made with many of the genre's early adopters (i.e., your EQ1 crowd) in mind.

Would be a nice change from the "accessibility is king" product that is on the main conveyor belt, for sure.

What's wrong with Elves? In a game that contains a large amount of magic and fantasy, I would expect them to be a part of the lore and world.

nothign wrong, but as the other games like gw2 try to atrack people with something "new" (not really new, just a well done verison of "wahteverumaycallit") Rifts keep with a quite BORING update as other try to "innovate".

Hope they come with something interesting, but till now just their 3 class systen seam apealing while other games have more features.

Been excited about this game for a long time and I still am (would still give it a 10 in the hype meter) and although I have no problem with elves it would've been nice to see something different.

But like I said I have no problems with elves and this race certainly won't make me want to play this game any less... hell I may even play as this race on release

I'll definetly be playing a Kelari. And I don't see why many people say; O look, another elven race. The Kelari are wholly different from the high elves... both races are humanoid and their ears may look similar, but that's really it. I prefer 'old races' over 'innovative races' like the Charr in GW2. An evil dog race, wtf?

No kidding. Creativity and originality are fantastic, but novelty for novelty's sake is just obnoxious.

Bahmi aren't really a human race. They are a large race that resemble genies.

Been following this game for a while and like what i am seeing.

Oh my, it's just a race and people think it's a total let down. Honestly, I can't compare this elf (Kelari) to many others, it has its own unique spin to it.

I like how this game is setting their races. If you are more understanding you will know they aren't doing this to get people to play just because they have a bunch of 'humans'. If they were creating races because people liked them they would put halflings/gnomes. Do I see them? Nope. People adore 'non-human' races such as orcs, trolls, cat people, do you see them? I don't.

Reinvent the genre? Is this all people want? Why does it have to reinvent the genre to be good? =)

The cake is still a lie.

Because platypus-people and giant robot pirate ninja aliens who are also zombies are OMFGAWSUM.

    Or something.

Charr were the antagonists of GW1.  I don't think anyone claimed they were innovative >.>.

Why are you hating without knowledge of the race?

The race is more than meets the eye and they aint even a dog race, they are a cat race. Those furry buggers have more depth than an oil well in afghanistan.

    This is not a game.

Get used to people throwing around this fallacy to hate on GW2.  It's called the 'fallacy of composition'.  It attributes the property of an individual thing within a class to the whole of the class.  For example, "People call Guild Wars 2 innovative, but (x specific aspect of the game) is not innovative, therefore those people are wrong and Guild Wars is not innovative."

The counterpart fallacy, 'division', would come to a similar error in a slightly different way: "People call Guild Wars 2 innovative, therefore they must mean to say that every aspect of it is innovative."

  • twruletwrule Member Posts: 1,251

And Saerain was using a false cause fallacy - assuming the Charr were placed in GW2 purely for novelty and no other reason (such as being a main force in GW1's lore, or the fact that any game is going to have races created specifically for their IP, and have no reason to include the traditional ones like elves besides player familiarity).
