This thread is for you fantasy music lovers. You know, the kind of people that can still remember and hum/whistle tunes from RPGs that you haven't played in years (FF7 or Secret of Mana, anyone?). For these people, it just takes a quick reminder of one of these songs to put you in one of those nostalgic moods, and wisk you back into your past years of gaming...
Okay guys, say whatever the heck you want about WoW, its mechanics, its art, the grinding...whatever. One thing that nobody can diss is its sountrack. Its put together by a team of composers who know what they are doing. If you have never played WoW, and know nothing about how good they do music, then take a quick stop by this thread here (upcoming music updates for the Cataclysm expansion:

Epic right? After I listened to these songs, I was reminded of why I respected Blizzard's soundrack capabilities. It then led me to wondering if GW2's soundtrack will be able to pose a real challenge to WoW's music. I mean, its obvious that A-Net's art, dynamic event system, personal stories, dungeons, and gameplay mechanics are really going to give Blizzard a run for its money, so to speak (and I didn't say WoW killer, so chill out), but what about the music?
For those of you who may share my concerns, I suggest you look at the name JEREMY SOULE. Look at this man's track record for video game and movie soundtracks. This guy knows what he is doing too. Heck, he's doin the soundtrack for Duke Nukem Forever! And he's the dude who composed the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe title theme. Also, for you Oblivion and Morrowind lovers...yeah...that was him too. This is the guy who did the GW soundtrack, and he's doing the GW2 soundtrack too!! WHOOHOO!!!!
If someone wants an idea of the type of music that we are likely to expect in-game, in addition to the video's we've posted, take a look at these two concept art slideshows. This is probably just a snippet of what we will hear. The music seems pretty good!

Well, I definitely appreciate soundtracks. And in some cases can be very turned off of some of them.
My degree is in music compostion. It's really nice to listen to the details, the changes in orchestration. I'm sometimes surprised at some of the sounds used (when they don't use an orchestra) as some of the samples can be really horrendous. LOTRO is sort of guilty of this from time to time.

Yeah, LOTRO does get on my nerves in that department too.
The thing is that there have been so many good Fantasy movies that have come out in the years like Lord of the Rings or Legend (bet not many of you remember that one, eh?), that a half-hearted attempt at soundtracks won't cut it anymore. Even now, players factor the music into their sense of immersion, which is a quite interesting phenomena, because in real life, you don't have music playing in the background while you are in combat or exploring. Regardless, its important today.
So far, I think I"m going to be pleased with GW2's soundtrack...

I listened to some of the WoW music and all i can say is that Guild Wars music is much better! every song Jeremy soule does is a masterpiece. Those who made it for WoW is not far away but their songs is so....soft all through the song, nothing happens and many of the songs are like the other.
My vote goes to Jeremy Soule, defentivaly.
GWs soundtrack is excellent so no need to worry.
Only game with a better soundtrack would possibly be AoC, I am not sure which one of those 2 that is best...
Wow is ok but below GW.
Guild Wars soundtrack really catches my attention. In fact to be honest having played WoW for a year or so I cant even hear the music in my head, but I can still hear GW music and visualize each melody that goes with each location.
Listen to this and imagine pre searing ascalon, run in the woods were the light seek through the three tops and warmth your cheek, animals run there harmlessly and it,s o beautiful it can be.
It,s so beautiful, really i want to live there
I agree here, both about GW and AoC's soundtrack. I've heard some of the soundtracks from the new WoW expansion, it's pretty good as well. Music is so subjective though, everyone is going to have different tastes. I'm not worried in the least about GW2's music though.
lol, not only do I own Legend (and saw it in the theaters when it was released) I also own the director's cut which not only restores footage, it also restores the orginal orchestral score. As opposed to the Tangerine dream score.
I used to have heavy discussions wit my film teacher about the use of music.
quite frankly it can be over done. I've watched movies that were way too overscored.
As far as the comment about the wow music regarding "nothign happens", I do think they are going for more mood pieces as opposed to actually composing themes which develop over the time of the piece.

This is one of my favorite Guild Wars pieces. Also one of my favorite areas. I created a character whose sole purpose was to only be in that starter area.

Also note the in-game music from the 50 minute demo I posted here. Especially when your get into Divinity's Reach. Beautiful. Sounds just like Jeremy Soule's style.

Pretty good but I believe TERA's music will surpass it by a long-shot.

Anyhow, a good soundtrack on an already good game is still a plus.
High elf and Castanica is really good, reminded me of Guild Wars music

The WoW composers are good but they aren't Jeremy Soule.
OH yes !.. I totally forgot about that, its extremely amazing soundtrack as well..
Ah.. when first played GW this was obviously one of the first tracks I ever heard.. amazing.. Just amazing.
I allways loved the login screen track in the original gw. Just listening brings back so many good memories.
Did you even read the OP? The link is already there.

Wow, not bad. At first, I didn't like the fact that each song sounded totally different from each other. But then I remember how dull the music can sound if all the song sound too similar. Even though I love Jeremy Soule, I do feel that Oblivion suffered from this a little. Some of the songs started to sound a little too much alike. Still loved the soundtrack though!

But you didin't link it - I bet over half didn't even bother to copy'n'paste the URL - now don't make we do your work for you again.
Well, if people are that dense to totally overlook the address in the post, despite the context of the paragraph above it (it would make no sense without it), then thats their problem. Its not the first time someone just put the address instead of the link. Anyways, thanks for linking it.

As a fan of gaming music....heck I used to just play games for the music bits back when Nintendo had their Nintendo Famicom and Super Famicom. I remember playing Donkey Kong just to finish the game, loved the ending part to death!
Epic indeed is Seiken densetsu (The Secret of Mana) released on the Super Famicom. I bought the soundtrack in Japan and still have in my collection. The opening theme is epic, the rest is good as well.
I love WoW music, especially the Vanilla opening music:

It's still regarded as the best openings ever, as well as:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1j1GzGO2w&feature=related (Nightelf starting area)
GW 2, I haven't heard much of it but I think the Sylvari music sounds pretty good.
GW music is epic, especially:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FBuxs6oxZ4 (Pre Ascalon)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mc0OSVrhoE&feature=related (Ashford Abbey, love the strings)
I really appreciate both of the composers and their music, for me it is not about which game the music comes from but the music itself.
GW definitely!
Lineage 2 also had a good soundtrack
Very memorable themes there, including the Secret of Mana Opening theme, and the Vanilla WoW opening theme. Music is very important in the RPG genres. Half-hearted attempts at a brilliant soundtrack don't easily pass these days.

I remember quitting City of Heroes for one simple reason: there was no music. I'm not the type to play my own music (when I listen to my music, it's MUSIC-TIME). CoH had an intro-zone theme, and then stopped. No CoH for me,
Both WoW and GW were up-and-down when it came to their soundtracks. Some zones in WoW were amazing...others, not so much (most of the undead regions).
GW had a different problem. Yes, the music was great...but it wasn't memorable....it was just kinda...background. I want Soule to go Inception-style with GW2, giving us some REALLY memorable zone music.
I'm surprised this thread got to 3 pages. I thought I was the only one that really loves game music (cmon, Chrono Trigger).
*edit*
I don't play Aion anymore, but damn.....THAT had a good soundtrack.
