What will be your starting city?

I'm not terribly familiar with FFXI or FFXIV but I've noticed there are faction related quests. I also noticed each city only has a few battle class guilds.

So my question is:

Does your starting city affect much of anything?

Secondly what city will you start in?

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

It may affect a lot, it may affect very little.  If there are tons more quests coming you may be able to do quests for, let's say, the Marauder's Guild and get a special weapon, clothing, emblem, something.. eventually.  Speculation of course.

It may simply be the atmosphere you want to surround yourself with.

I'm going Limsa Lominsa simply because I like the pirates, the sahagin and the Musketeer's Guild.  I want guns.  Give me guns.  Damnit.

I have yet to try Ul'dah though.  When the lobby server comes back online I'm going to give it a go, likely.

Objectivity is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.

The class and crafting guilds are split among the 3 cities.  But I think you cant earn guild marks till L20+ anyway (I think) so by that time you should be able to get from one to the other no problem.  Probably you should pick based on which one you like better.

The first thing I will do on Sept 22nd is run from Gridania (my starting city) to Uldah and Lima.  The run can be done safely enough just make sure you pick up the teleport points at the camps along the way in case you encouter a nasty hostile.  That way I can easily teleport to any city and pick and choose the best leves and buy equipment unique to each city.  Particually I want the leves that award equipment when I am starting out.

Your starting city only affects what storyline quests you get.

I tried running across a zone or two, died rather. Is there a map online with pathing?

Ul'Dah! I love the npcs. Being called a poxy whore easily made my month.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

Probably Limsa Lominsa. Not because I actually like the place, but because the monsters there are incredibly useful for grinding the first 10 or so ranks and gathering a ton of wind/earth shards, which I desperately need for crafting.

Then I'll probably stick to Ul'dah the vast majority of the game.

    Gridania!!

You know deep down you crave getting lost in the woods, running into moogles, morbols, and monkies!!

Just play the "Lost Woods" theme from Zelda Ocarina of Time and you will be so immersed in the woods you'll have a little fairy orbiting your char.

    Limsa Lominsa

i simply like the city, even the design is somewhat irritating

and the quest play a major role as well, i like the theme of pirates, justice, all other sutff

Gridania is beautfiul, but i am not a big fan of whole element fantasy theme

The storyline in Ul'Dah is my least favourite, it is just WEAK!

I'm probably going to start in Gridania and then find some way to Limsa Lominsa. I love Gridania's story the most, but I ove the coastal feel of Limsa. In beta, spending that much time in the forest got on my nerves after awhile.

Going to start in Ul'dah, although I will run to the other two cities and get the teleport points. In my opinion, Ul'dah is the most efficiently laid out. It's not a maze like Gridania and not as confusing as Limsa Lominsa.

Plus, I kind of like the way the zone looks. The sandstorms looks pretty sweet and atmospheric. Although I love all weather in this game, it's really well done. Except when it rains inside caves...

Edit: also, it's the zone I'm most familiar with. I want to get done with the newbie stuff fast in order to avoid some of the mob zerg that's going to be happening.

Everyone played the poop out of that in CB. And saw the intro thing a million times in the Benchmark. However the population will be higher there when the game goes live. Just like how it was the most populated in OB.

Hahahaha, the raining in the caves yeah, I caught that one too.

Ul'dah for me as well, for my combat toon. Probably because I know the most about the mob layout around that area the best. My crafting alt will most likely be started in Gridania just because the resource nodes are more frequent and easier to move between (the forest canyon does have a nice benefit on resource nodes - you walk past them all eventually).

Having started in Gridania in OB, I will say this much- there seems to be a "hole" in player ranks where you're too tough to get decent EXP from Funguars but you get annihilated if you try to fight the monkeys or Lone Wolves. There's simply nothing else to fight. It's frustrating as hell and basically requires that the player go to Ul'dah or LL to fight Dodos and level up.

Gridania was my frist choice in the beta, and I've decided fro sentimental reasons to make it my first choice in release too.

I agree with those wo have said that Ul'Dah is a lot more efficiently laid out.

I could see Limsa as being a bit intimidating.  All those suspention bridges!  Lucky you can't fall off the sides, or the ocean would be strewn with as many player corpses as Greater Faydark below the wood elf town.

Gridania. See my avatar to know what little event triggered that choice in-game.

Those creatures will save the world, I'm telling you. Because they know better than any of us humans.
