Bethesda had have a MMO department for 2 years but they have yet to announce a game. There were some buzz on this forum at the time because they were hiring in people for it.
So I wouldn't call it a awesome surprise, more expected announcement. But an elser scroll MMO should be 2-3 years away, MMOs usually take 4-5 years to make unless you throw out some unfinnished junk alá Cryptic and I think Bethesda is too professional for that.
The other rumor is that it is a fallout MMO but Black isle currently have the license and is making one.
Because they are really bad coded and released in bad shape? Or maybe he just doesn't like full loot.
Maybe he wants a PvE sandbox? There are many other ways to make a MMO with those points that DF and MO.
My problem with those games are that the programmers just weren't good enough, but that is me.
It is Bethesda, they are well funded so I think we will see a release.
As for if it is Elder scrolls, here is their complete reumé:
The Elder Scrolls
Oblivion
Morrowind
Daggerfall
Arena
Pirates of the Caribbean
IHRA Drag Racing
Sea Dogs
Star Trek: Legacy
Fallout 3
That means 4 out of 9 games are elder scrolls so I would at least give it a pretty good chance of being that.
Even if an elder scrolls mmo was released, I can't see it capturing the best parts of the single player games. The true fun/uniqueness of the series was the freedom. You could go in, steal random stuff, kill people who would stay dead, mess with the world, etc. You wouldn't be able to do that in an mmo format, because the world would be annihilated eventually and there'd be nothing left to interact with or advance the story. I can't imagine it working unless they heavily instanced everything to the point that it's basically a single player game anyway. No thanks, I'm happy with the franchise staying in it's current form.
Right now I'd rather take a new elder scrolls single player or co-op game. I don't think the technology is ready for what we really want. Give it 5-10 more years and we'll have the worlds we are craving.
Either that or the bastard AAA developers will continue to push the limits of graphics in MMOs and hold back the interesting worlds that some of us really crave.
WoW everyone thanks for the comments!!! the problem i mostly have with df and mortal online is that DF for some odd reason lagged like hell but mortal online was decent, i would like a sandbox type thing, i've gotten into this game called minecraft which is a sandbox single player game with multiplayer thats being updated, its just that minecraft has NO MAGIC, it might be added later but idk, I was searching online before i made this post and read about that Elder Scrolls MMO which gamespot pedicts at least an announcement like next year (cross our fingers) i love pvp its just that the f@#$ing hand to hand combat in DF is thirdperson, not to mention again it lagged like hell, and i just wanted to see if i could get a game that might be cheap and somewhat what im looking for, so thanks for the ac.tubine.com website, i think ill try that free trial and see if i can afford to play it, but if i cant find anything guess ima just stick with the singleplayer experience of elder scrolls and the magicless-ness of minecraft! But thank you all once again!!!! i would apreciate it if you all tried Minecraft at minecraft.net (sorry for promoting them i just really like the game) its a one time pay of $15 bucks and you get an awesome randomly generated world to explore!
Thank you all once again lol!!!
