Star Wars: The Old Republic: Becoming Obi Wan

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Bioware has released the latest video developer diary for Star Wars: The Old Republic. In it, devs discuss 'designing the light side' and how they are working hard to represent the classic Jedi experience for players. Citing Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and others as the basis for the design, devs also acknowledge choice in SWTOR, choice that allows for deviation from the light if and when necessary.

Guided by the Light Side of the Force, the Jedi are the ultimate defenders of peace, justice, and the Galactic Republic. The developers of Star Wars: The Old Republic are taking great care to ensure that Players can experience the classical Jedi fantasy represented in the films by such iconic characters as Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Yoda.

At the same time, choice is at the heart of The Old Republic and Players can also explore many other ways they can take their Jedi characters. Whether that means walking the path of the Dark Side like Anakin Skywalker or simply adopting a unique combination of fighting styles, a variety of options will be available.

Watch "Designing the Light Side" here.

It definitely looks like they are dropping the main heart of an MMO to make way to KotOR content. While I myself don't mind this, it'll piss off a lot of modern MMO players.

As for SWTOR's approach, they seem doomed by naysayers no matter what they do. If they try for anything original they get bashed by someone, somewhere. If they try something unoriginal, they get bashed by someone, somewhere. It is a catch 22.

I will be playing this, no matter what. I am not a Star  Wars fan, but I accept the fact that MMO's are not just "Click and Kill" anymore. My hat goes off to Bioware for a mixed approach of generic and fresh ideas to the genre.

The more I read about this game, the more I feel like it will be a single-player RPG with a chat box that I have to pay a monthly fee to play.

and this video about how they went about designing the class relates to that...how?

Read Karnage69's post. He pretty much summed it up there.

All this single play style content is great as long as they implement a good MMO endgame. If their idea of an endgame is just re-rolling for more adventure, then they will not keep the interest of many MMOers IMHO

Every single thing I see or read about this game makes me want to play it more. I can't wait for spring 2011!

You feel like you have to pay a monthly fee to play?  That's where you're wrong.

I'm a Star Wars fan, and I'll be playing this game regardless.

The more i read the more i wanna play swtor. It seems to me people who think its just gonna be a single player rpg havent been paying attention. Some of the demos have shown group play at work. Group quests and play do seem to exist in swtor.

They are given people companion pets to allow them to solo if they want. Most games give u this option if u want now a days. Soloing is a huge deal in alot of games today. if u arent solo freindly u wont succed as an mmo.

There is also so much we dont know about this game. End game content being a huge one.

Then don’t play it.  I will never understand all the people attacking this game for not being something it’s was never in envisioned to be.  I’m sure this game will have a ton of multiplayer content included (high level group quests, group dungeons, raids, etc.) but people seem focused on the single player experience.

It’s simple market economics.  If games like this do really well then it will encourage developers to make more like it.  Likewise If more “sandbox” MMO’s do well then we will see more of those.  Support the style of game you want to play rather than attacking the style you don’t.

Given that it is a game in development would mean that they may be open for input...it would seem that a good amount of input does lean towards sandbox styles. It also seems that "some" seem desperate to silence that side of opinion. Almost everyone I know and have played with for a decade now would prefer a sandbox style MMO vs being funneled through an NPC story line.

Personally I think a mix between the two styles would be a nice change (if executed well). I believe it is a possible to develop an MMO this way.

Meh, still looks like KotOR 3,4,5,6,7, etc with a monthly fee.

Not a write off until I some reviews of the game after release, but I'm definitely not impressed with what I've been seeing so far.

Alright this game isn't a single player rpg, it never will be and there is tons of information avaiable from swtor, darth hater, and people who have played this at PAX to back up said claim.

But you know what lets say it was, lets say you're right this is a single player rpg, and it has enough content as a single player rpg for 5 full single player games.

Lets tally the costs and do some math with me to make this into a positive still

Normal mmo box cost = 50 dollars

    monthly sub = 15 dollars

normal single player rpg = 50 dollars

    5 single player rpgs = 250 dollars

so even if you're right and its a single player rpg with that amount of content, you are essentially paying 65 dollars for 250 dollars worth of content.

So if its a single palyer rpg [which its not] shouldn't that also be cause of celebration since you are saving so much money to play such an epic srpg?

Why is it , if things change, people throw up their hands , and say FAIL.

Well I like the changes coming down and like the whole idea, I got to play the game for a very short time, and I can say, what they had , was wonderful and fun, not the everyday MMO for sure.

Count me in, no matter what direction, they go .... I am a SWTOR fan until the end.

Note to all the other WOW fans out there; stop trying to make SWTOR into WOW , its not going to work out that way, if your looking for a WOW type game in a SWTOR t-shirt, just give up now, SWTOR is a whole new MMO.

The game might still be in development but Bioware committed to the focus and direction of the game years ago so it’s a little late to expect significant changes at this point.  Being it’s Bioware, a company that has always prided themselves on the story element in their games I am a little confused why anyone would expect anything else from them.

For me since the only things that didn’t make KOTOR 1 a perfect game was the lack of multiplayer and that it ended way to quickly I am absolutely ecstatic about this game.  I could care less if they want to charge me $15 a month or so as long as they keep bringing new content to the game it’s worth it.

Because big name title after big name title from LoTRO, to Warhammer, to AoC, to AION, to CO, to STO has failed in the eyes of the forum posters here at mmorpg.com.  Naturally, those forum posters have become jaded and bitter towards any big name MMORPG with any semblance of mainstream hype.

Though BioWare has an established track record of never releasing a game that wasn't, at the very least, an extremely solid and enjoyable experience, they continually blast BioWare for their lack of experience in developing MMORPGs, insistence on sticking to an established formula, and story oriented direction, all the while feeling apprehensive and doubtful of any promises BioWare may make as to the inherent quality of the game, yet they place the utmost faith in ArenaNet and their new Guild Wars game despite Anet's lack of experience in developing MMORPGs or, for that matter, video games in general and continually insist that, for some reason, Anet has the best interest of their gamers at heart and will develop a quality product that lives up to each and every bit of developer-created hype.  So, as you can see, it actually makes perfect sense.....wait, what was that last part again?

This is mostly my stance but the difference is I am a huge Star Wars fan and have familiarized myself with all aspects of it from the films cartoon series, comics and novels so that would have me pretty stoked for the game anyway.  I'm also not the average mmo player in that I don't see doom in gloom in anything that is different than what I might already be asking for so I would still have been interested in trying a game that used the approach Bioware are using.

No matter what though this game will have it's detractors just like it will have it's fans.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Amen I mean hell I still play KotOR and KotOR 2 every now and again. So even though we know it isn't a SPG.If it was I would still be happy to have a endless KotOR game. But we know that there is Crafting for Crafters(Not sure how strong hopefully not like STO stupid ass crafting), We know there is Group instance's where if u don't build your group right can fail, There is AH for sellers, There has been talk off End Game and raid type instance.Where u will want to run over and over and use the Skip Convo button. There is alot of MMO stuff here . I was hoping for more WoW like crafting but we can have everything. Of course when they do stay to MMO design ,ppl bitch that it isn't anything new, When they change a MMO design for better ppl bitch that it isn';t a MMO when u do that.:-P WTH how can u win against Trolls.

Also because GW2 is improving so much from the 1st, with new additions to MMO gameplay with dynamic events AND it its only one payment. Thats a huge factor. We forgive it more because hey I'm only ever gonna pay for this once. If there are a few gameplay/design issues, so what? The innovation and quality I'm getting is great for the price!

With SWTOR we look at it and go, Bioware I hear not too much about MMO aspects of the game just some group questing. I'll be damned if I pay for the game and monthly payments and its not got the MMO I desire down! It seems with as you said big titles failing in eyes of payers(yes pun intended) that now we are watching more carefully before devoting a few months worth of subscription dollars or what ever currency you use.

I mean why I left WoW after 8 years was I had my Lock full decked out,not many could duel him, I have a Pally fully Loaded and went to make my 3rd full loaded and was so tired of the same dam story over and over. Yes I was the Lock everyone would bitch at the 1st time through a quest because I read story even in WoW,AoC,LotRO, EvE (lol), SWG, and the list goes on. So having a Diff story for your toon (which is optional) u won't get bored when u Got your Main and Alt Decked out with full end game Gear and tired of helping every though them hehe(sometimes u need a me day) u can go make a 2nd and maybe even 3 rd alt waiting for More content and expansions.

(Edit in post above: We Can't have it all.)

This game keeps looking better and better. I am really looking forward to seeing what some of the endgame is going to be like and to see how "different" the crafting system will be.
