Where is the "epic story"?

I am quite unsure if i shall subscribe to this game, even tho im loving the combat system, and the classes. Also, the crafting looks very promising. However, the stories you encounter in the Closen / open beta of FFXIV arent as promising in my opinion. You see many of the cinematic trailers which present an strange yet attractive story, but where is it? You have to agree on that the story in the beta were quite lacking, running around for a very little purpose (if not any purpose) in the big cities, yes mabye to introduce you to the other guilds but still just feel like wasting time (especially, no voiceovers? It was so dull talking to the npcs). So does the story improve later on? Cause if they would present an very epic story i would totally subscribe to this game. Share what you know /think!

PS: Why is the land so  empty? And it doesnt feel as different from walking through it tbh (all the same mobs tbh, till you encounter a 2k shotting elite)

Basically, there's certain NPCs you need to find in the game world for whom talking to that start you out on actual "Quests" (as opposed to Guildleves) and these quests tell the story through a series of interactive cutscenes. The Adventurer's guild is a good place to start if you have no such quest, also check the NPC Linkshell options as sometimes you might need to use that to advance the story.

Fairly good example of how the story gets told in between the rest of the gameplay here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxalTazRIyw

In beta, almost all of this content was disabled, intentionally, to save the surprise for release. So you would not have seen it, yet.

I played through four quests in the intro (Gridania surprised me by having a second quest) and they all seem to have an introduction having to do with there being something fundamentally wrong with the balance of nature, with some very subtle hints that this may eventually lead to the war going on between the Knights of Ishgard and dragonkind.

it's still a speculation point as to how much SE held back. if you're on the negative bandwagon, you swear they didn't even bother to make a story to begin with because "i played OB and i couldn't get to see endgame, or any story." if you're pragmatic "i'm pretty sure they held back, but from what i saw it wasn't much possibly." if you're me, and the other enthusiastic people who may even be OVERLY optimistic "they held it all back so everyone who held out would wet themselves at the overabundance of awesome we'll see." but i can say safely that 12 times out of soon to be 14 (i liked 9 but let's face it not the greatest, and X-2 was basically "charlies angels set to FF) they haven't let me down, so i'm ok with being overly optimistic.

SE loves to push story; there is no reason for them to suddenly do a U-turn and pull a typical-MMO move when they've, according to so many people are "DESTROYING THE MMO WORLD AS WE NOW KNOW IT!!!11shift1onez.".

So... wait till Wednesday. It's not that big of a deal. We will eventually see whether this is true or not shortly. THEN we can let all hell break loose on the forums.

You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.

    hehe  indubitably :)

I'm pretty sure SE just kept some cards to themselves...I'll find out when I'm done tearing open my box and waiting for update servers to patch me.

I can’t imagine they would go through all the trouble to add voice acting capabilities only to use it in the first couple minutes of the game so I wouldn’t be surprised if most to all the cut scenes are voiced on release.

We shall see on Wednesday when the CE versions get here.  I’m sure there will be tons of “I told you so” quotes from both sides regardless of what the final game is like.

I'd just play a single player game for an actual good single player story. Why would I play a MMORPG for one? Makes no sense. You guys are seriously buying this?

You do have Mass Effect 1&2, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Fallout 1-3, Knights of the old republic 1&2, Planescape: Torment, Oblivion and rest of the Elder Scrolls series, older single player Final Fantasies, Icewind Dale, and many, many more etc.

Maybe because in mmorpg there's rpg?

Just maybe tough I could be wrong....

The point is obvious having a story with real people not ai.

I won’t speak for others but for the majority of those games the biggest issue with them has been I can’t share in the experience of discovering the story with others.  After all adventure isn’t about level or loot it’s about experiences, usually with others.

There is a reason most Single player games build parties instead of adventuring alone, and many have elaborate coding that goes into attempting to build emotional relationships with those virtual party members.  A much better way to play a game like that is to give players the tools to build their own parties with other humans.
