The Arena.Net team has posted a detailed look at the 'Extended Experience' that Guild Wars 2 players can expect. The extended experience is based on the recently announced applications that players will be able to take advantage of even when not around their personal gaming rigs. By utilizing mobile and web technologies, players will, at least according to developer Rick Ellis, be able to watch friends in game in real time. And that, according to Rick, is the tip of the iceberg.
Now that you know the team and our philosophy, I’m sure the real question on everyone’s mind is “What else can we expect to see in the future?” Without giving up too much more information—we do have to keep some secrets—what you can expect to see is a series of apps that will share information with each other and the Guild Wars 2 system in ways that simply haven’t been done before.
The most prominent features for mobile and web users will probably stem from the ability to stay connected to the game world and, more importantly, your friends and guildies. We’ll be doing as much as we can to remove the communication barrier that exists between in-game players and out-of-game players. How many times have you been away from your computer on raid night and wished you could connect up with your guild, monitor their progress, share your insights, and ultimately share in their victory? The ability to socialize beyond the game boundaries is essential, and it’s one of the first things we’re working on. Naturally, security and the protection of personal information are of paramount importance with social features like this. With the broader possibilities for communication, we want to ensure people are always in control of who talks to them and when.

Q: When you say mobile, what exactly does that mean?
A: Initially, we will be offering applications that will run on iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Android smart phones.
Q: I dont have a smart phone; will we have the same functionality on the web?
A: Yes, we will provide similar functionality for web users.
Only 2 things I needed to read.
Go Android :P
BOOYAKA!
I agree, Cyress. :P Love my Droid.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Smart move. The potential weaving in social networks and phone applications are limitless. At first I thought it was going to be an advertising sort of tool where you can pound your chest and say i killed the Shatterer on facebook. However, they are aiming for more interaction. This is innovation folks. We have been crying for some innovation and we may just get it.
We just have to get some threads going on what could enhance GW2 with this.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
GW2 seems to be the only forth-coming MMORPG with any innovation at all.
well nice, but still i would like to see this text beggining with...
"As we are closing the development of the major features and EVERYTHING is working well, and ready to launch we will start talking about iphone crap..."
... kind of thing :x
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
ANet is just too awesome. GW2 is looking like the most revolutionary MMORPG on the horizon right up there with SWTOR.
Also, ANDROID > iCrap.
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
Arena net rocks!!
Thanks for bringing us next generation stuff.
Arena net will oversuccess.I can feel it.
Seems like a way to make money without a cash shop. "Buy our app so you can see your auctions at work!" or "Text your guildies while on the crapper!" No thanks.
That is cool. I love my Android phone and look forward to seeing these apps.
They already confirmed that the app will be free. Yes you read it, free!
Same for the webbrowser app.
Edit for proof: http://www.curse.com/articles/guild-wars-2-news/811276.aspx
"The app will be available to Guild Wars 2 players for no extra charge."
There were other articles saying the same thing. But was the first article I found :P
There has to be a catch, sir.
The App is free. ANet has already said that.
Services for people who have a game addiction and can't take a break from the game for a few hours, nice.
Already covered. Be quicker next time.
They might have some "premium" app that allows you to do a few more things for a whopping $3 or something, Oh Nooooooo
Feisty..
App store = cash shop. Yay! Wait ... no.
Yeah, free things are never nice! oh...wait
Nothing is free when it comes to MMOs, sir.
Well some things are, and some things are not amigo. As far as dishing out money goes, Guild Wars 2 will not leave your wallet empty, or even close. One payment, and that's for the game. The way it should be. You want a smartphone app to go with that good sir? "Oh, yes I do! but how much more extra??" "Well, it's only $0." "Oh...well then I guess so!" "Well then here you go, and enjoy." "Oh thank you so much!"
Hmm ... and internet fees, and the purchase of the smartphone and the phones normal service fee and the data service ... yeap 0 bucks after buying the game.
that was stupid cause um...yea, they have the browser page if you don't have a smartphone. In todays society i would be suprised if you dont have a smartphone. Also for that data plan and internet fees, WIFI ftw?
Love can kill you, it can also save your life....
You guys crack me up!
Btw you gotta love these devs and their idea of revolutionizing every aspect of MMOs and more. Anet ftw!
Eat me!
...making a game available with mobile/web interfaces makes it more vulnerable to hacking and scamming...
app on mobile phones won't be free. they said there will be a small fee "to prevent spammers" or something like that, can't give you source atm.
