I played the open beta for the last week or so and came out of it feeling much better about the game. Yes there are some quirks and the game plays a bit old school.
The biggest impact the game had on me was in the area of community. The lack of hundreds of 12-16 year olds telling chuck norris jokes was refreshing. There was a sense calm while playing the game. I did not feel like I was in a rush to level. I spent alot of my time learning the different aspects of the game and exploring. Folks were friendly and there was a sense of community already developing.
Not since Ryzom have I seen a game with the hope of a great community. FFXIV will change that.
I see all the hate in this forum towards this game. This is a good thing!!! The more immature children that avoid this game the better off it will be. Think about it... a game world free from the wow crowd. Can a gamer ask for anything better than that.

(Or something like that.)
Looking forward to a different community than I have experienced in games lately. WAR, AoC (certainly some great folks there though), WoW of course. For the most part crude and curtness prevails a lot of evenings on chat.
EQ2 had a nice community over the years, and folks on the Core talk about FF11 having a good one as well.
I had a slightly different experience. It beta, there really didn't seem to be very much interaction between people in game. I talked with a handful of people, but the lack of any regional chat made the gameworld seem strangely silent to me.
It is quieter in general, on account of how the chat interface is a bit smaller (I think you're limited to some 100 characters per line) and has a tendency to reset in mid-sentence if you're doing anything.
However, the folk I did meet were pretty cool all around. (Well, except for the guy who got excited when the beta servers were about to go down and started shouting about Pedobear and Lalafells. I'm hoping his budget restricts him to F2P games.)
No level 80 alliance players killing all the lower level NPCs at Crossroads so lower level horde players can't do anything? That will take some getting used to!
Orcs have crunchy bones.
For the Alliance!!!
Don't say that to the Forsaken! lol
No PVP helps a lot as well I think.
PVP will come soon
check out ffxivcore.

I hope its restricted to separate servers.
I’m not a PVP hater, I play Global Agenda and really enjoy it. I just find the community in most PVP games destructive on the whole. There are exceptions of course but pouring though all the crap can get mind numbing sometimes.
The lack of a jump key will deter many an asshat, I imagine. No more morons jumping around! Yay!
I agree. But if there is future PVP that attracts asshats, then by that time the rest of us should be so far ahead of them that we can make life very difficult for them.
If it's anything like FFXI's implementation, you'll have nothing to worry about, PvP will be far removed from the greater PvE activities as an optional side activity at best.
It's true, it'd be like:
Moron: "Oh, look at that spike in the ground, I'm going to jump over it!"
Moron's Friends: "NO, YOU FOOL, THERE IS NO JUMP KEY, STOP!"
*Gory sounds*
All games have their share of immature players. Name me one game that doesn't.
Exactly and blameing PvP for asshats sounds stupid.. IMO it jus sounds like people are makeing up excuses to make it seem like this game luanching without PvP is a good thing.. It's a bad thing.. Almost all standard MMO's launch with some sort of pvp system.. And not all of FFXIV players will be FFXI vet's, many of them will be MMO players looking for a game to play until one of the bigger MMO's are launched.. And IMO that's gonna be the biggest population for FFXIV atm and it'll dwindle quick without PvP as most people expect that from a MMO now-a-days..
Plus it's not Square Enix met for this game to be PvE only.. If they had the time i'am sure they would've implemented PvP at launch but alas they don't have that time.. So for those of you saying "PvP would ruin this game because of the community!!1!1" or "FFXIV is suppose to be without pvp!!" you're not makeing much sense anymore because Square Enix intended for this game to have pvp (hence some skills more pvp-friendly then others) and it will eventually attract pvp players.. You no longer need to make up excuses to be alright with this game launching without it!
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
I agree PvP does not = bad crowd by default. As mentioned AoC has some really good folks playing both on Cimmeria PvP and Wiccana PvE.
Lack of global chat is going to have a weird effect on things, especially new players. "how do I do X?" "Please help" etc...
And no I do not agree with "figure it out yourself" responses. This is not monday morning traffic, this is a fantasy community.
Maybe there will be some Linkshells that exist solely for new player assistance? Something like the Eve University? Hmm, actually does anyone know if that already exists on Besaid or other server? Maybe I will just seek them out from the beginning. Not for me to request help but to provide it.
Biggest thing this game has going for it is that there's NO GENERAL CHAT/ZONE CHAT/GLOBAL CHAT.
Most people are going the way they did in FFXI. They're in a great linkshell, chatting it up on vent, while playing on a controller.
How profound >.>
We aren't talking absence of asshats. We are talking quantities. And the quantity of asshats in FF14 will be like the quantity in FF11, a very tolerable amount that is within the powers of the community to controll. /shout in FF11 was sometimes trolled but the trolls usually stopped before there rep was completely ruined.
I love snails.
I love every kinda snail.
I just want to hug them all, but I cant.
Cant hug every snail.
You mean, not "hearing" the players because of the lack of any chatchannel worth it's name, makes the community more mature? Interesting perspective.
When i want to grind alone without any communication whatsoever, i'd rather play an offline RPG. At least some of them have a decent story.
PVP by its nature is competitive and trash talk is much more tolerable in a competitive environment then a cooperative one so I think to say there is more trash talking in PVP games is a fair assessment. And typically such trash talk carries over into global, local, shouts whatever. There are many good PVP players but there are also many “asshats” as other have put it ones to.
As for the idea that all MMO’s need PVP I would challenge that as a myth. It’s true that PVP is one way to keep players end game but it by no means has to be the only one. I think a good well designed MMO without PVP can do really well as long as the developers look for alternatives ways to keep the end game crowd occupied. I would say if anything PVP is a easy way for developers to skimp on end game content.
EVE Online, its pvp for the mature, sophisticated asshats. Those asshats don't fool around and go half way in their asshattery.
All die, so die well.
Seems like a waste of money if one of the big things for you is community. From my experience with the open beta of this game it is mostly elitist's like the OP, while some people might like that it seems that EVERY game other than WoW has this mentality.
But whatever to each there own, I personally found barrens chat in WoW entertaining while running from one spot to the other.
IMO like every other mmo post WoW, the first month at least chat will be like this. "How do you find so and so npc?" "Read the quest text you scrub, go back to WoW". Pretty much generally any response to most questions will be "go back to WoW"
But I do believe that the linkshell system for all chat channels is what allows for a better overall community. Not that there wont be those who are annoying but they will find it harder to enjoy the game. Because ever linkshell, that is, every chat channel is a player created one, they will tend to be self policing and will develop around groups with similar interests and sensiblities. Trolls generally have to depend on having a forum or a channel that is both available to everyone by default and unpoliced. The wider the channel, that is, the bigger the audience the better. That is why General/World/LFG/Trade channels tend to be junk in so many games.
In this game every channel has a founder and those in charge will have to decide how they will police it. If they don't that is also their choice but that could mean a lot of people leaving the channel as well. If someone chooses to become abusive then can be kicked out or the channel itself will suffer the consequences of allowing the bad behavior. It is really a very good system. Granted, there is no default channels to get started in so everything seem very quiet at first but people will learn quickly that you simply have to go out of your way at first to find a group of folks to hang out with. And hopefully, since you can be in multiple linkshells, the folks aready in them will be inclined to go out of their way to bring more in.
And at the end of the day. Those who are asshats will probably find Eorzea a very lonely place.
All die, so die well.
I think you are projecting.
