And at the end of the day. Those who are asshats will probably find Eorzea a very lonely place.
Very insightful post. There are reasons why asshats won't like XIV. That is one reason I like it! I am a little tired of my fellow American gamers. More and more it seems as if they are spoiled brats, as if the vast majority are foolish asshats, too quick to judge and too quick to whine. Maybe that is a misperception on my part, and if so I apologize to my fellow western gamers. But either way I am ready to interact with other gaming cultures.
Seems like a waste of money if one of the big things for you is community. From my experience with the open beta of this game it is mostly elitist's like the OP, while some people might like that it seems that EVERY game other than WoW has this mentality.
But whatever to each there own, I personally found barrens chat in WoW entertaining while running from one spot to the other.
IMO like every other mmo post WoW, the first month at least chat will be like this. "How do you find so and so npc?" "Read the quest text you scrub, go back to WoW". Pretty much generally any response to most questions will be "go back to WoW"
Hey you, go back to wow!
I hope not really. OB chat was quiet but thats pretty normal in most recent beta experiences - plus without global chat makes it tougher.
I worry about the RTM spammers at launch and sometime after - perhaps Square has a plan to address them. Blacklist is going to fill up fast.
I intend to counter the "go back" shouts. I don't expect to hand hold everyone, though I'll at least try to provide something constructive if I know the answer.
The community can be shaped. Maybe enough people will deride those kinds of responses that it becomes the norm instead of "yeah what he said go back to wow!"

I don't think you are misperceiving anything, though the problem isn't entirely limited to the west. Asian cultures are generally much more polite, and that is greatly to their credit. The root problem in the west has to do with boys largely not being socialized by men any longer. Men are pack animals like wolves. Packs have rules and structure. But those that are raised in isolation don't learn how to live in the pack and end up getting driven off, at best, or killed at worse. This is why prison populations are skyrocketing and 80% of those there are from fatherless families.

Nice Theory, but I am going with the fact those on the net dont have to answer to anyone and have no worry about anyone coming to their houses and punching them in the nose for being an asshat, including the leet players I have seen in all these FF threads who chant stay outta my game!

That is exactly the problem with the internet. There is no way for the pack wolves to drive off the rabid lone wolves. That's why we see them hanging around and eventually coalescing in gangs that come to be known as griefer guilds. But at least FFXIV gives you a better way to avoid these types and less opportunities for them to be a nuicance. Lack of socialization creates the asshat. MMOs simply give the asshats a stage. Motive and opportunity. You need both before the crime shows up.
I had a slightly different experience. It beta, there really didn't seem to be very much interaction between people in game. I talked with a handful of people, but the lack of any regional chat made the gameworld seem strangely silent to me.
Regional chat isn't really a community. It is just a chat channel, you could just go to IRC and chat it up with a bunch of people.
Community in this game is formed through the people you meet to do guildleves, the crafters you personally interact with, the multi-lingual/cultural population, the reputation you recieve, and the bonds you make from all that personal interaction.
This was the community in FFXI, this was the community in the FFXIV beta for many of us at least, some were confused having come from very different MMO's and not knowing/expecting what to do. For those people all it takes is one helpful person to initiate you into what an MMO community can really be, if anyone needs help on Selbina tomorrow feel free to send me a tell. - Raj Murugan
All games have their share of immature players. Name me one game that doesn't.
No one claimed otherwise. The issue is that the number of these immature players tends to be drastically higher in pvp games. I've played many of both, and that's been true in every single one of them.

I have played plenty of player vs player games without immature players, and plenty with. The same goes for PvE games as well. Mileage will vary. No point argueing opinion here.
Final Fantasy XIV has alot going for it as an mmo in regards to lore, gameplay, and pve experience from what I experienced in the beta.
Cheers!
