You are asking for the same things everyone is looking for.  I'm having fun in lotro at the moment.

  • SkuzSkuz Member UncommonPosts: 1,018

I don't think any single game encompasses all you are looking for, you'd have to pick at least 3 titles out of those.

Ultimately, it boils down to personal taste which you'll enjoy most so you're just going to have to check out the trials that are available.

I understand that but i was just wondering other peoples opinions on the games and which they play or think i should play

Most of those games have free trials. Give them a whirl and see for yourself.

Well from your list i'd have to reccomend that you try World of Warcraft first. Nowadays every other game is compared to WoW either positively or negatively, so it's useful to have even if only as a reference to use against future games you play. Other than that, it also has the largest playerbase and is probably the easiest on the list for someone first getting started playing MMO's to get in to.

  • KlizziKlizzi Member Posts: 110

I'm going to tell you straight up, despite my desire to flame it because I've so overplayed it, but play WoW if you haven't. There will be tons of flamers here to flame it, but these people are either 1.) Fanboys of other MMO's or 2.) have played WoW for so long the taught of playing it anymore makes them sick.

It's the whole package. I'll break it down for you.

    • You can solo to 80 or group to 80.

    • Finding groups for quests and dungeons is easy.

    • There is a lot of fun and good loot to be had while leveling.

    • Has the best and most balanced end game, hands down. 10 man raids, 25 man raids, big bosses, good loot.

    • Has very farmable content, from 5 man groups to 25 man raids to solo farming.

    • There is rep to grind through quests and the collection of items. The Reputation groups provide excellent rewards.

    • There are many things to buy, from mounts (both ground and air) to items.

    • The auction house is affordable. The economy is still good and you can always make a pretty penny selling stuff.

    • The game's tutorial gets you into the game and killing/questing instantly.

    • Lots of attacks and abilities, from heals, to direct attacks, to AoE.

    • Each class has multiple specs that provide variation and specific abilities.

    • There are always groups and people to play with, 24/7.

    • Crafting is excellent. It provides usable items and stat boosters for other items as well as tools for making currency.

    • The combat is fun, there is very little down time and you get useful spells and attacks all the way to 80.

    • Lots of zones to quest in, MUCH more than you'll need to get to level 80.

    • Very active and competitive PvP, from 2v2, 3v3, 5v5 arena matches to 10v10+ battlegrounds with objectives such as Capture The Flag.

    • Mounts allow you to traverse the zones quickly, 58+ allows you to purchase a flying mount which allows you to fly through zones (literally and figuratively), complete freedom, no restriction.

    • Two factions that collide constantly in PvP, separate home cities ( multiple main cities per faction), multiple unique races per faction. Horde - Trolls, Taurens, Orcs, Undead, Blood Elves. Alliance - Gnomes, Dwarves, Night Elves, Dreanei (Alien race),  Humans. Different quests and quest towns per faction.

    • Tons more.

Don't listen to anyone flaming it, it's what you're looking for. The only other MMORPG that can truly stand toe to toe with WoW is EVE Online, simply because it provides a whole package for players and is very unique. There's a reason WoW's population completely destroys every other game's population, I suggest you check it out. I wish little more than to delete all memory of WoW from my mind so that I could replay it all over again. It's that good.

Does LOTR have PvP?  I thought I read it didn't?

Yes, it does.  It's called Monster Play where you can play as a Freep or Creep.  It is instanced and it is brutal especially if someone thinks you are just there spying for the other side.  There is such a small amount of players that participate on each side, everyone knows everyone PvPing on the server.   It is fun a lot of fun.

I think fallen earth tends to have what your looking for mostly. It has both good PvE and PvP. it's aimed based.  Theres relatively good crafting in that game last time i checked.

There 6 factions each which either help each other or hate each other.  PvP encircled areas and contested towns which you can take for your faction and hold from other players.  Which of course give you benefits like merchants that you can buy from that people of other factions can't.

So if your looking for an experience. Try that game out. It has mostly what your looking for. if your into post-apocolyptic theme games with an FPS type feel. Then you'll like this game.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

I think the PvP for Lotro is only for subscribers...

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

I'm going to remove some options that don't belong in the list according to your wants.

    World of Warcraft

    Age of Conan

    Warhammer Online

    Fallen Earth

    The ones I left out:

    Darkfall - Poor PvE

Star Wars Galaxies - Poor PvE

Eve - It's an excellent game, but is complicated and does not have a traditional combat style. Also, PvE is poor in my opinion.

Second Life - It's a social game. The most fun I had with it is building things and then selling them to people. There are no enemies to fight or loot to gather.

Planet Entropia - Another social game like Second Life.

Out of those four, all of which I have played a great deal, I would recommend WoW for two reasons.

    1. WoW is coming out with a new expansion that will repopulate the lower level areas with players to group with.

    2. The most important thing in your list of likes,in my opinion, is fun. In WoW, you can level through dungeons, by questing or through PvP. For a beginning player of MMOs, this offers a nice variety of stuff to do right away. And there are plenty of people that participate in all of these activities starting early on.

But the poster has a good point.  I've subscribed to WoW for 5 1/2 of the last six years and had been a subscriber since closed beta 2 of WoW.  About six months ago I finally hung up the dagger set.   While I really love WoW and believe Blizzard is one of the very best developers out there, I just can't bring myself to play WoW any more.  Of the games listed, I've played them all and the only one I would consider for the long hall is WoW.  While I love EVE, it has a learning curve steeper than any other MMORPG and is by far the most brutal of all the games on the market.   You can spend years "leveling" your character, and a player that kills your ships takes your stuff, they then have the option to blow your pod.  If that happens, it mean re-roll character time.  All your work gone up in an instant and there is no fighting back or escaping once you've gone from ship to pod.

I've done trials of a few games in your list, played AoC from launch day and played LotRo for a year, with all honesty i still go back to the very first MMO i ever played from back in 2005.. Star Wars Galaxies. it has everythign your asking for in your likes.

PvE - Good story driven quest chain to start off with (Legacy) which gets updates to from time to time (extending updates that is) as well and many more PvE options (i mainly PvE myself)

PvP - it's alive and kicking, some might say it's dead but chances are they're on low population servers or on servers not based in their native area (US/EU). it's active and City Invasions are included as well as battlegrounds and open world PvP (just stay flagged as special forces and you'll find someone or they'll find you lol)

Endgame - this one doesn't really end cause your always trying to improve yourself with all the possibilities out there, but for those that judge endgame as raids etc you'll find Instances, (Exar Kun, Tusken invasion, IG88, Hoth etc) which can be classed as raids i suppose.

Crafting & Economy - crafting is complex and enjoyable, not just a case of get this and that and slap it together, you have experimentation and resource quality to account for. money is always being thrown around and crafters make some decent amounts still, specially those that make powerups (temporary buffs) and other consumables.

Combat - although the typical auto attack and pressing of skill buttons is the foundation you have to work out when to use what skill and when to hang back  due to your opponents style of play, as an example you could be hitting them with everythign you have when suddenly they hit their heal and slap on a defensive short term skill which will actually negate your attacks or bounce some of the damage back at you, stick to auto fire at these times and use the time to regen your action pool.

Overall the game is still fun and has a good community overall (everywhere has idiots though no matter what you play).

Lotro is supposed to be good in PvE. WoW got huge amounts of content obviously, with a new expansion coming up, so shouldn't be boring there either. And Fallen Earth is the most immersive MMORPG I ever played.

    • and PVP

WAR got the most fun PvP I played in an MMORPG.

    • with good Endgame Features

I play few MMORPGs to the endgame features, so can't say a lot about that. WoW got Raids, Arena, Battlegrounds and stuff. so there is some stuff to do.

    • Good Crafting

Fallen Earth has the best crafting. WoW's is just so-so. WARs crafting is barely existant.

    • and Economy

Guess many players = working economy, or not? Few people = no economy. Enough people and you should have a supply/demand thing going.

    • Good Combat

Depends on what is "good combat" for you. I liked the one from Fallen Earth a lot, since you actually have to aim there, which prevents it from turning into the "press 2, 1, 2, 3 and the enemy is dead" lethargy of many other MMORPGs

    • And a game thats fun

Personal opinion. Also depends on the community. FE ones was the most mature I met. WoW... well, very childish, but since many people play it you can try to find a guild with likeminded people.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

  • ShanniaShannia Member Posts: 2,096

Very good point about SWG.  If you never played it pre-CU/NGE, it is definately a game worth checking out.  Be sure to roll your character on Farstrider (I believe that is the name of the most populated server).  I'm biased against SWG because of the whole CU/NGE thing... but since you never played it, don't concern yourself with it.  Just go give SWG a whirl, it is a lot of fun.

If everything you listed is equally important, go with World of Warcraft. It's average or better at everything. If some of what you listed is more important than other things, my recommendation would probably be different, e.g.:

PvP most important -> Go with Darkfall, WAR or EVE Online

Crafting most important -> Go with EVE, Fallen Earth or SWG

Economy most important -> EVE or Planet Entropia

Good combat most important -> Age of Conan

If fun is most important (when is it not?)... choose a game someone else is willing to start playing with you, or one known for a friendly community. Who you are playing with is more important than game mechanics for having fun with an MMORPG (though it helps to enjoy the basics, of course).

Even though i hate the game because i've played it for so many years, i would recomend WoW, because it's still an awesome experience, especially if you're (relatively) new to MMO's. Do not listen to the people flaming it, as a lot of them havent even played WoW, and are flaming it to look cool, along with some other reasons Klizzi posted.

I would agree to the previous posters, though WoW is receiving many negative comments, I'd still suggest it among your list.

Breaking down each game would be pointless since you could like or dislike each game for entirely different reasons than the break downs describe.

Try each game. Most if not all have free trials. It's the only way to be sure!

    Two things:

One, WoW has the worst community. Which makes the game experience extremely unimmersive and takes away from the "social" aspect of the MMO.

And Two: WoW has the most players because over 10 million of them are from Asia. How many US players does WoW have? Nothing close to what they advertise, so its a moot point. I play on a server with low pop.... Im forced to server transfer.... wheres the 13 million players they speak of???? nowhere. So this point is invalid.

You can play on EQ2X and experience a large player base on that one server then you would on many servers on WoW.

    WoW is not "human-friendly"

  • socialstatussocialstatus Member Posts: 72

I like that last statement " WoW is not human-friendly" To be fair there are reasons as to why WoW is popular and if you chose a decently populated server theres lots of people :). The only part of the community that sucks is relatively small portion of its players that decides to talk in public chat, if you find a cool guild it'll be lots of fun! Out of your games I recommend WoW. Also if your willing to try something else I've been having alot of fun with Dugeon fighter online and Everquest 2 extended both are free and highly populated.

    Playing: Ever quest 2
    Played: MS,GW,EVE,LOTRO,WoW,Allods,Aion, CO,CoH,CoV,TQ Digital games, Darkfall,AoC,RS2.
Liked: Dungeon fight online, GW, Darkfall and, Runescape.
Waiting for: Link Realms(can't get my damn beta invite) KOTOR and, GW2
