Because I haven't seen this anywhere yet. I do keep seeing that players will pretty much need to do the repairs for themselves and other players. Which crafting classes do this and how far along do you need to be to start doing repairs for other people?
Comments
I believe the crafting skill required to repair is dependent on component needed for repairing item. So for example, repairing a cloth hat requires cotton - you would need Clothcraft to repair it.
Here are a couple links for more info:

Edit: Those links didn't really help too much, but the idea sounds good, hopefully that's it.
Erhun, Everything degrades noticably a night fighting will trash your weapon. Or armor.... against each items is a line which identifies what basic craft material is required to repair the item.
So you can carry some repair mayterials around with you and repair the groups items or your items on the move. Works really well I guess the only catch is having the skill top repair fine armors which require expensive materials to repair.
The system works really well and adds to the game play , if you want to fight for extended periods solo it will cost you

Sorry, thought the general armor crafting/repair might give some help.
As stated each piece of equipment can be damaged during use or battle. You will see a notification if significant damage occurs. Everyone can be use any crafting tool so you will be able to repair on your own and others with the appropriate tool/skill level. Higher level equipment requires higher skill to repair.
Each piece of equipment requires a specific component so you cannot just carry around 10x Iron Ore to fix a shield.
Also, each city includes a NPC who can repair armor, but I am not certain of cost or limitations. I suppose it won't be as good as a proficient player repair. Think I read somewhere its like a 75% max durability repair...
Thanks for the info. So I will be able to start repairing low level gear very early into my crafting career?
All the low level gear I had I was able to repair with lvl 1 crafting.
repairing your own armor or having to have someone do it for you, you consider a feature, i consider a lame timesink. thats all it is. where is the fun in hunting down reagents just to repair your armor just so you can kill things? completely stupid.
Yes. You should be able to repair all the starting equipment with the complimentary crafting at R1. However, as you rank up and your equipment becomes better, they'll ask for more advanced materials (copper nuggets for starting weapons, bronze nuggets for the next tiers, etc.).
I BELIEVE all the materials needed are actually craftable by the same craft job (blacksmith repairs weapons and also creates nuggets, armorsmith repairs metal armors which requires plates or squares which, in turn, the armorsmith makes, etc). So I think how well and how reliably you can craft the material will give you an easy way to guess if you'll be able to repair it or not.
EDIT: @mmjarec: Or you can set up your personal bazaar or your retainer to seek repairs for the item. I added my damaged equipment to my retainer and offered an average of 1000 gil for them before I logged off. When I returned the following day, everything had been repaired and I'm sure there's one (or a few) people out there a few thousand gil richer.
Additionally, there are repair NPCs you can get the service from. They tend to become quite expensive on stuff that isn't the starting out, weathered junk, and don't repair it to mint. But if you're so against that, there they are.
Thanks for the answers helped a lot. now lets all point and laugh at the troll.
Yes NPC's in every city (and possibly other locations) can repair your armor and weapon/tool up to 75% for a little less than it will cost you to have a player do it (as in the cost of the repair material).
In the beta these NPC's would not repair jewelry, it isn't really clear rather this was a bug or if they just want you to seek out goldsmiths. One thing to note though is that jewelry degrades at a much, much, slower rate than armor. In all of my playing my jewelry which I bought at level 5 did not degrade past 50% making it any less effective than when I bought it. I got to 20 on two jobs, crafted with it in (into the teens on several crafts), died plenty, fought in the elements (fighting in sandstorms and rain supposedly makes your armor and weapons degraded at a slightly faster rate), and explored plenty dieing to monsters far above my level.
Fighting mobs above your level, or wearing equipment that is not optimized for you (either it is optimized for a different job, or it is beyond your currently equipped rank) significantly increases the rate at which armor degrades.
Judging from the cinematic opener, and the hints in Goldsmithing and Blacksmithing abilities (as well as statements by the developers) it seems that later on some boss mobs may have the ability to wrack or sunder armor as well, rendering it useless and possibly requiring a spot repair either between battles or even during battles. Meaning having a crafter at some higher level leve's and end game content might be pretty much a requirement.

The first step in slaying a dragon is learning to keep your britches from falling off your ass.
It is very zen really.
All die, so die well.
Jumping the gun a bit aren't you.
You do not have to repair anything it is your choice.
It is a feature and plays nice into , the whole community working together this is not your standard whack a mole.

I agree. While I think some people would like to see leveling, crafting, walking, typing, macroing, consumables, limit breaks, prerequesite quests, raiding, farming, grouping, and upkeep taken away from MMO's because they are all nothing but "timesinks" to others it is pretty much what defines an MMO..
Take them all out and what is left, PvP? Emotes? I'm sure guild wars 2 (the current flavor of the month pipe dream, but you can insert whatever) will properly do away with all of these, but then again if it really does it won't really be a true MMO, at least in my eyes.

I see the picture... Anything oriented to help build a community is a time sink.
We all know a good community is a bad thing now a days & end game is where the game start. Sigh...
Yep lots of things I could pick on with the FF XIV Beta, but to honest I was really enjoying myself for the first time in a long time. I cannot remmber the last time i logged onto an MMO and when it came time to log off only had a vague idea of what had happened what I had done other than the feeling of surprise and fun.
Great Game and please note the word Game, this game has gameplay.
