Pre-ordered the DVD, CAN'T PLAY BECAUSE STEAM SERVERS ARE DOWN

Amazon Verified PurchaseThis review is from: Sid Meier's Civilization V (DVD-ROM)

"The DVD is in front of me, teasing me. I clicked install, finished up the Steam registration... and then get an error message: the Steam servers are too busy to handle my request. The game shows up on my Steam account, but just won't install. What's the point? Just let me install my $50 game. Pre-order? Never again."

    And there's more:

"According to the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam's availability is not guaranteed and Valve is under no legal obligation to release an update disabling the authentication system in the event that Steam becomes permanently unavailable."

I urge you to think twice before purchasing this game.

Don't buy it through steam then? Steam is garbage, not sure why people use it. Anyway,  I plan to get the game in a couple weeks.

I have to admit, he has a point, there was some really stupid shit about Civ 4's combat system.  Frankly its the aspect of Civ 4 i hated the most.  Particularly the tiles of doom.

Civ 5's greatest acheivement in my eyes is the military changes.  No longer can a nation create an unending string of troops.  I used to hate end game single player against the computer because no matter what, when you have 30+ cities and a "huge" world, the computer simply IS better at micro managing the building of and consolodation of troops.  You really can't compete as a human.

In Civ5, if you have 1 iron mine in your sphere of control, it will only support a limited number of iron units.  Same with horses, etc.  That means that just like in RL, if you control 2x the landmass as the other guy, you are going to gain some advantages instead of all disadvantages like in Civ 4.

The game is not without faults though.  If you go on a conquering mission, its very easy to cut your own achilles tendon.  Unfortunately they added in this stupid as fuck mechanic where if you have "too many" cities (of course there is almost no way to determine what is "too many"..." Then you're citizens get super unhappy.  Well, generally not a big deal right? i'll just build some building that create happiness and problem solved!.... WRONG.  Of course when your people are unhappy, your production goes to shit, so that colliseum that might only have taken 11 turns to build now takes 48.  In the mean time you're getting your shit stomped by the computer because you cant reinforce, or really do fuck all.

It's clearly stated, that Civilization 5 requires steam in order to launch it. Even if you buy boxed version, it contains steam installation, and you have to have a working steam acount in order to play Civ 5.

Well, I'm a Steam user and can't remember the last time I couldn't load a game because it was down. Nor do I think, in the unlikely event that Steam shut down in two years, firaxis would leave everyone unable to play their biggest game. I do agree, however, that having to install Steam to play a game you haven't bought there is a bit much and I'm surprised there hasn't been more fuss about it.

Ooops, maybe you should have read his posts properly. You don't know why people use Steam but you're buying Civ V in a couple of weeks? You'll be using Steam then ;)

I have to wait until next weekend to get it, otherwise the "on last turn" syndrom will put my work week into jeopardy.

Nice review btw! Looking forward to play this newcoming :)

I am a Steam user as well and have never had an issue with it. In fact, it is extremely convenient. When I travel for work and get bored at a hotel I can pop on to Steam and DL any of the games I have through them and its fast. No need to carry CDs or anything. Even through they have a disclaimer about updates the games always seem to get updated to the latest version as well. To call Steam Mallware or anything of that nature is false and way off base.

This week they had CO for $6 bucks so I went and bought a gift copy for a friend on Steam. He was up and playing right away. They often have steep discounts on great games and once in your library  they are always there for you. Also, you can play any locally installed games in offline mode should Steam or your IP be down.

That being said, Firaxis should label that in big bold letters if it is a requirement.

I'm more curious what kind of modding tools Civ5 offers, every Civ game to date has been more or less retarded in number of ways.

I can. The last big sale they had. They had so many people buying shit that when you'd try to download and/or install the games you bought ( the popular ones like GTA IV ) you'd get the "servers are busy" error continually. Took me all day to get one game to install.

So far all I have seen is the ability for custom maps. If the game is in true civ tradition there will be more to come there.

Looks like almost every 1 star rating on Amazon came from 2 complaints.

    Steam.

    Game-breaking bugs.

Many of them didn't even play the game and just sited steam as the reason for their 1 star review. Kind of amusing.

I can understand their complaints in a way. I was unaware that Steam was required in order to play Civ 5 when I posted earlier in this thread, I thought it was just an option. This reminds me of Ubisoft and their decision with Assassins Creed 2 requiring you to have an internet connection in order to play it on the PC. And if their server is down? Well tough luck for you.

Yeah, I think using Steam for DRM was a silly idea. It won't make any difference to pirates.

But, I think they should review a game... based on the game. It made them all look foolish to me. Like they were trying to get revenge or something.

Here's a pretty amazing MetaCritic score with 50 reviews:

I don't remember any game having a 94 on that site ever in all of history.

Though this score is for Civilization IV ;-)

The one for Civilization V [score 91] is here.

I really would like to play this game but I don't like Steam at all. Sigh.

  • eyeswideopeneyeswideopen Member Posts: 2,414

Just buy the game then use a cracked exe. to bypass needing Steam.

Care to explain how it's similar?

FYI:  All steam games can be run when not connected to the internet.   Click the button that says *offline mode*.     Problem solved?

Of course.     Its using Steam DRM.

On the bright side - Steam is fantastic and you can get some crazy deals on older games.

    Congratulations on your new install!

Awesome, uses Steam Cloud and has Achievements.

Loved the Demo. Pre-loaded and ready to play.

Steam is the last hope for PC gaming.

God i love sheer, unadulterated ignorance.

Steam doesn't require you to have an internet connection to play any of your games.  It never has.

It is in no way like what ubisoft did.  Ubisoft's DRM even pissed off one of their own because it requires that you MAINTAIN an internet connection the ENTIRE time you are playing it single player.  So if your connection even hiccups it will boot you off.

Steam on the other hand has an offline mode, i use it almost daily during the late nights at work when call volume slows down and i need to pass the time.
