EvE online, does it burn out fast?

arskeenoarskeeno Member Posts: 5

I have been playing eve online for 2 years now, and honestly, i'm not even sure if i ever want to login again. Has anyone else out there hit this brickwall? if so, was there something that made eve seem fun and exciting again? i've been almost exclusively involved in pvp since my character started, so i guess it would stand to reason that the game seems to have lost the exciting edge. anyway, just wondering if anyone else out there felt like this.

I've hit this wall as well. Let my sub on Eve die just over a month ago after YEARS. Tried Ryzom, which was fun for about 2-3 weeks. Then I hit up free trials of SWG, PoTB, WAR, AoC, WoW, FoM. Tried F2P games like Wizard 101 (which is fun just not really shit to do in it), DDO and the new LOTRO. Nothing has captured me yet but I think it's mainly due to

1: I'm just really wanting SWTOR more than anything.

    and

2: They're MMO's and I really don't have any friends that play these kind of games and so I have no one to work with. I've been feeling the boredom of playing MMO's solo lately I believe.

Yeah, i get that way too not having many friends, although i've tried PoTBS before and i loved it (i have a thing for naval combat)

I guess my problem stems from living in the same system for the past 6 months, that and solo pvp is all but dead in eve.. idk i may give PoTBS another try, especially since it is going f2p

The excessive tedium and lack of things to do burned me out fast...but I think my definition of "fast" is a little different than yours (meaning I've tried it on 4 separate occasions, none lasting longer than 1 month, most ending in 1-2 weeks.)

You shouldn't feel obligated to try to find fun in a game you don't enjoy.

Eve is a great mmo but its to static of a mmo. With Dust and station walk it should breath some life into eve again.

heh, to be honest i burned out on the game awhile ago, the past year has been nothing but trying to find the fun, but i think you are right, i shouldn't have to find the fun. i guess it was just that i invested so much in the game that i felt like i had to find it interesting again.

I played the game for 3 months and I started getting home sick. Space is a very lonely place.

In the sci-fi movies, humans or aliens redesigns their ship to have a feel like home. In Eve, this is part is missing. It would have been nice if players can enjoy some scenes from your home world while orbiting on asteroid farming. Instead, all you can do is watch your ship, going round and round and round and.... you get the picture.

So was I burned out, yes, not only that, lonely and bored also.

What I used to find fun in MMOs, like I did when SWG first came out, was the community and belonging to a group one. I don't have that anymore. I don't know anyone, belong to no guilds, etc and in most MMOs, there is no casual laid back atmosphere where a group, guild, etc can just come together for no other purpose than to hang out. No questing, no crafting, just hanging out and tossing the shit.

I remember when AC2 launched. Nobody really "Knew" how to play, so everyone just pugged up and grinded. It was great fun just slaughtering the wildlife and chatting... as long as the gun servers worked that is, lol

Yeah, I thought it was getting quite tedious as well so I let my subscription die.

    What's "Dust?"

Now, about Walking On Stations - I think I'll retry the game once that comes out. I wish I'd figure out when though.

i think thats one of the main reasons why SWG was as popular as it was, it had a great community ( as did DAOC!) but so many games these days seem to encourage solo gameplay, which imo, is about as boring as it gets, even mundane tasks can be fun if your having a laugh with friends. why shouldnt an MMO be a social event after all, imo, the best games are. and if Eve isnt a social game .. i dont know what is..

I have been heavily involved in pvp and hit that wall too but then I just decided to do other things in eve, I decided to go do alot of exploring, I did pve missions, I tried militia and generally poked at all other directions of eve, I even spent months creating solo tengu's, widow's etc and had fun in them currently i've put together 30 different cheap t1 suicide battleships to go bounce off camps with the specific idea of getting blown up (one hooker and one cattle in each hold), I may go nuke some macro miners or smartbomb myself into oblivion.

hmm maybe its just me but now and then true pvp/fleet alliance etc is too serious so i'll go do something silly like last night I was in my manticor (forgot my bombs) and spent 3 hours stalking a 25 man fleet spooking them hehe, doing fake bombing runs etc.

  • Too many mmorpg force group play to just play them  , and sadly I think eve has/going  that way . Sometimes I just like to play alone and go pvp  ,but that is about impossible in too many of the "now gen" games .  its nothing more than ,  lets get together and gank and chat fest, nowa days. IMO

I played EVE for a long time. I hit the same wall most people here mentioned. Mine was my own fault though, I just took on to many tasks within my corp, and turned it into a job. A couple months of that forced me to take a break, and I just lost touch with the game.

Aside from little pockets of people here and there, I don't think the glory days of using MMOs as a chatroom are ever coming back.  With IM, forums like this one, facebook, twitter ... there are simply too many better ways of connecting and communicating than pulling up a massive MMO client.

As for burnout ... I think that happens to pretty much everyone no matter what game you're playing.  It's the gaming equivilent of a midlife crisis - that "wait, what has all this effort really accomplished?" moment.

sometimes you can just play a single game too much, i've been playing Eve for years, but every now and then i do have to take  a break from it, sometimes for several months at a time. its just one of those things, and sometimes there can be a lot of pressure in game to achieve certain targets - monthly kills, set time for pos takedowns etc, i think most players end up taking a break, but i just know that its the game i will always end up coming back to, i dont know of any other game that comes close to offering what Eve does.

Happens to us all mate. Take a break come back when the next expansion hits and do something different. Been to W-space? Try that. Lived in lo-sec? Go there. Or do something totally other. 4 years and I haven't tried more than a fraction of the things to do.

I have been playing eve since launch and played for maybe 4 years before I took my first break... I felt guilty not playing, which is fairly common when having responsibilities in a corporation and alliance, but  you need a break sometimes. I came back to eve maybe 6 months later and maybe 2 years later i had another break about 6 months. I kept my subscription going during most of my break also to keep training though as if i ever came back I would hate myself if I lost so much SP.

Take as much break as you want and play many many other mmo's in your break. More than likely youll be back (nothing seems to satisy as much) so buy GTC so you keep training.

     This ^^ QFT

Add on top of that, being an officer in an alliance.

Trying to create a great atmosphere for my corpmates and trying to keep the whole moving along became so tedious I had to jump ship and take a break. Skill training is still running as I ahven't quite got the itch to pull the plug completely. The game was a lot of fun before it became a job and I still ahve lots of friends in game so I might return, just waiting for it to feel right.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS

Solo has a lot to do with how much fun you will have (unless your team is annoying or terribad).

If you did take a break and go through some trials or play some free games like DDO or LoTRO for a bit you will find that all of the games suck pretty much compared to sandbox games (at least thats my experience now) and EVE may seem that much better when you return. Maybe if they could make a themepark right . .. like the original EQ . ..

If you are seriously thinking of quitting for good try out Darkfall. It has its similarities to EVE but all in all they are totally different from one another.

Yeah I've sorta hit this too, been playing about 5 years and I love eve but I'm starting to realise there's some things I need from an mmo that eve just doesn't have.

First of which is being able to quickly jump on, play for half an hour then log off. I'd also like to be able to do some cheap low risk combat, t1 cruisers or frigs and stuff.... unfortunately my clone costs 20 mil which kinda defeats the point unless you go low sec. I could start up another alt and just keep them low skilled but tbh that's just a massive pita and I love being a jack of all trades in combat so it would be annoying stuck to a specific fighting style.

The other major thing is role play. I'm minmatar through and through and I'm also a fairly big care bear so I want to help minmatar out by building up the crumbling republic rather than shooting amarr. In the back story we keep hearing again and again of how there is a cultural revolution going on as large parts of the republic are trying to focus on rebuilding the republic. Yet in game there isn't a thing we can do about it, it's all just background noise that will probably eventually have some big effect that is implemented in a patch but the whole change and process is pretty much removed from gameplay. At best you can pretend to be doing something for the republic and hope to get enough followers and publicity for CCP to notice and mention it in the backstory. In the PvP realm everything is controlled by the players, in the NPC realm we are merely bystanders.

EVE is the only MMORPG I've ever returned to after leaving it. Twice. (I started back when the graphics looked like dog dookie.)

Why? Well, I retired from all the other MMORPGs I've played because of genuine problems with the game itself and/or with the game's community. I only left EVE (twice) because of my own personal issues, not due to EVE being a crap game or having a terrible community.

EVE isn't perfect, but it remains a solid, open-ended science fiction game with a fascinating (if not particularly upbeat or welcoming) community. Still, I'm quite sure that after 3-5 years, even EVE becomes boring. It is just a game, after all, and we're human beings who will eventually grow tired of any one computer game.

Here's hoping EVE continues to grow and improve for many years to come. Perhaps after a few years' break, you'll return to the game, and all will be fresh and new again. (And let's face it: The chances of a new MMORPG of EVE's caliber being released in this era of gaming are extremely low, except possibly something created by CCP themselves.)

    Currently Playing: EVE Online
Retired From: UO, FFXI, AO, SWG, Ryzom, GW, WoW, WAR

EVE is the only MMO I've subbed to three different times and left, the last time being just a few weeks ago. There's something about it that keeps me interested over the years, but I get bored with it fast. Every several months I'll get the itch to try it again.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
