Guild Wars 2: Do We Really Need To Be SO Connected?

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In his latest entry into the MMORPG.com Staff Blog, Bill Murphy examines the Guild Wars 2 Extended Experience. Bill wonders whether or not we really need to be SO connected that the game is with us at every moment of the day. Conversely, Bill champions the ability to take care of 'busy work' through an app so he actually has more game time when he logs in. What do you think? Read Bill's blog entry and then let us know!

After today's announcement about Guild Wars 2's Extended Experience on the iPhone, iPad, and Droid devices I'm starting to wonder just when I'm ever going to truly log out of my MMOs.  WoW has its own app for Auction Houseneeds and the like too. I suppose it's only a matter of time before we're not only playing MMOs on our PCs and consoles but on our phones while we're taking the train or bored at work too.

The only question is, do we need to be that connected?  In short no, and there will undoubtedly be people who go over the top with it being logged in 24/7. But it is good to see a developer looking to utilise the modern tech that is available.

Ultimately it is down to the individual to decide what constitutes as an acceptable level of usage.

Next there will be not only GW2 Tee shirts for sale, but GW2 Droid like pads and electronics. An alarm clock which signals when an Dynamic Event Resets.

to me it seems a bit obnoxious. but its also optional. so it doesnt really matter.

The great thing about the way Anet is approaching it, is that if you do not like it you can simply not buy/do it. All the abilities the app will have can be done during normal gameplay. So it will benefit the ones interested and will not hurt the ones not interested.

Honestly.. Who cares let the people do what ever they want some people want to be very connected and some don't. My question is why does it matter? It's not our choice to choose how connected someone wants to be to their game...

Personally i've never really understood the fascination with having to have some connection to every little thing no matter where you are. I very rarely even use the internet for browsing on my phone never mind anything else. As someone previously mentioned though, it won't affect me in the slightest but it will still boggle.

I think it is only natural and I think the next few years will see more and more big games having their own "extended" mobile applications.

Its not a matter of IF we need to be SO connected. Its a matter that there is a public that WANTS to be so connected. Thats why games like Farmville are so popular. Because their both fun and available pretty much wherever you go.

Games are like movies, books and so on. Their entertainment and a way to escape from the mundane. Its not unusual  to see people on the train or bus listening to music, or playing a game on the iPhome, or reading a book. This people are just trying to fill the boring moments of daily life with something fun.

IF this applications can make the boring moments more fun, than so be it.

But even if not on the move this type of application  can become quite useful. The mobile application could function as an additional display like Sideshow or the popular lcd dsiplays in Logitech top of the line gaming keyboards. They can do a lot more though.

For instance, the game could use the smarthphone to display the world map and you could use it to set waypoints on the mobile app, or check if your heading in the right direction.

I probably won't use any of the "extended" systems, but it certainly wouldn't bother me to have them exist, allowing others who would enjoy them to use them.

AO Used to have something similar where I could logon to guild chat outside of the game

Always loved the idea of being a merchant and checking in / selling when at work (like organising crafting goods available and banked for when get home)  ^^

    It's optional.

    It's free.

Don't like it? Don't use it. Your lack to trust and skepticism is probably more annoying than those who lack the willpower to stop playing. Personally I shouldn't have to lose options just because there are some people who don't know what self-restraint is. That's their issue and the responsible shouldn't be punished for it.

Does Rupert Murdoch own this website? Because this article reads like a FOX News exclusive.

Do you need to be SO connected? No, because it's an optional feature for those of us who would like to stay connected with our friends and guildmates while we're at work or away. Yes, I do have real life friends who I play with and yes, I like keeping in touch with them.

A better question would be: do YOU WANT to be SO connected. And that is something you should decide for yourself.

Stop with the alarmist BS. I swear, this website is going down the crapper.

Lol, if you have the time for it, go ahead. For me I rather stay away from the game when I'm not playing it.

Of course it is great for people spending long time on a train or buss every day.

With phones having dual 2.5 ghz cpu's and fast gpu's by late 2011/early 2012 you will see more and more actual mmo's playable on them (as well as tablets).  With bluetooth keyboards/mice and HDMI output I think it will be safe to say that by 2012 gamers will have the option of playing 3d games in fairly good resolution sometime in 2012 (Tegra 4 chipset).   And then there are the rollout screens.....

Ever see the movie Surrogates? I've long believed we'll all end up like that one day.

The bad part? I don't really mind.

     Thumbs up! Awesome movie.

Anyway, the more options the better no?

I don't believe it's something neccessary really, just for people who are extremely addicted I guess. Personally I prefer the distance you get from shit like this when going to work or just out with friends.

I honestly don't even see why articles like this are posted.  I mean, really?  Can we, oh, I don't know?  Get some actual news?  Interesting articles?  I'd prefer articles on game design, mmo design, hell, even WoW news in comparison to things like this.

Do we really need to ask such pointless questions?  See what I did thar?

I like to complain about games.
  • saraphimknigsaraphimknig Member Posts: 17

Going to be brutally honest: even if there is the question about whether we should be, people want to be. If you don't believe that, all you need to do is look at Facebook and Twitter for social site examples. Look at gaming forums, fansites, guild sites, etc for the rest of it. As a game developer, I have been faced with the ever growing want of players to have more community to their games. That community just happened to be maintained through fansites and the like, till recently. With achievement systems and the like, people expect more in game support for connecting with friends and associates. It's really just the natural progression, and for ANet, a smart move to be one of the first on the newer train.

I think it is nice for those who play MMOs like some sort of e sports. Personally, I have no need or will to let a MMO follow me everywhere I go.
