FFXI may be the biggest waiste of money, not because the game sucks, but because its so expensive.
Firstly, your first character is $12.99 a month. He's not very customizeable, and your skills arent very customizeable either. The races dont mix with the jobs very well, so in the end everyone is the same. They are a tarutaru mage or a galkan warrior. Humans are the only job thats versatile, but... UH OH! Everyone is a human. (humes as the call them in the game).
$1.00 a month for every character past your first. That is rediculous. So, to have 2 characters, your paying 13.99 a month.
Lets add one more, UH OH! You payed 14.99 a month for 3 characters, when WoW allows 80 characters for the same price. You got ripped off :/. WoW allows you to: Choose if you want to PVP
Pick what you look like in many more ways
The races dont count on the jobs, so a tauren shaman is as good as an orc shaman. Some races dont support some classes, but its not nearly as limiting as FFXI.
Dungeon bosses, mail system and AH (all found in FFXI, but for a much cheaper price)
This game is very creative, the players are nice, but I cant stand paying for $15 a month for 3 characters I can hardly make unique. That is rediculous. The servers are much stabler than WoW's. I never experiene lag in FFXI, but after a few months Im sure this problem in WoW will be fixed.

Sorry if it came out as a "GO TO WOW" post. I was comparing the prices and why I feel more content putting my money in WoW. Hell, I could call this "GO TO EQ2", but the point is, I think this game is WAAYY to much money compared to more popular games.

There's nothing wrong with trying to steer fellow gamers away from making the same mistakes you've made.  Everyone has their "take" on a subject and it's up to the person if they heed the advice.  FFXI isn't really a BAD game, it's just terribly average.  It takes an incredible amount of time/work to level your character.  Also it takes a lot of begging for higher level help to get quests done in a timely fashion.  MANY people I've seen quit at level 50 because they can't get the help to finish genkai 1 (the limit break wuest so you can level past 50)  That's just one example too.  Anyone who has sat Jeuno for 30 mins during a peak time can watch the barrage of help requests for everything from Kazham keys to Artifact Armor.  If you have a massive amount of time to level/farm/quest only to end up statistically DEAD EVEN compared to another person that is your job&race then this game is for you.  That's my take on it (wink)

Former FFXI, turned WOW, returning to FFXI

FFXI had to stop because was interupting with school (slightly addictive) and then WOW came live and figured I would give it a try. WOW is a great game, but there really was NO CHALLLENGE. You can solo until 60, get good/great items by farming (yes I know really low drop rates outside of instances) and you really never had a need to party if you chose to.

To me an MMO, and even an RPG, involves group play. From even the earlies games (outside of Dragon Warrior) you had a party. WOW didnt need one.

Another reason why I am leaving WOW is that the story line in the game sucks.... oh wait..... there really isnt one. Yes some of the chain quests sends you to different areas, but unlike FF you dont gain rank, you gain reputation, which only a few times gives you other quests. Once you hit 60 the game is basically over, Onyxia is cool but blah... MC is ok. At least they added raid bosses, the demon I will admit is a great addition which is tough as hell but the dragon is weak.

Both games have great graphics, one more life like while the other is more cartoonish. In both games jobs are even, everyone has a weakness with racial traits

But I find myself wanting more with WOW and it just seems like the story doesnt evolve enough to make it a RPG but more of a adventure game.

just by what you said, i know for a fact you didn't reached lvl 60 in wow.  i'm a lvl 60 rogue and all i can tell you is that if you think someone who camps/farm for his gear solo vs someone doing instances, that requires a group, to get his gear is the same, then you must be playing a different version of wow then me.  all the gear that drops from mobs you can solo, which are very limited and drop rate is almost 0%, is nothing compared to the high level instance loot that drops more frequently.  this game is the most solo friendly game out there but in the end, its all about getting groups just like all other mmo.  basically someone who does instances to get all his gear has much more godly gear than someone who tries to solo for it.  i learned this the hard way of course and now i'm forced to look for groups.

Banned from Blizzard cause I was too GOOD!!!

Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen someone post something that is EXACTLY how I feel. Im in the same scenario as you... I had to quit FFXI because of schoolwork, (went from public junior high to privite boarding high school, workload + 1 ton) and I went to WoW. After I got used to the work and scheduling of hectic boarding school life, I went back to FFXI. And basically for the same reasons as you.

Also, you must realize that in FFXI you dont NEED 80 characters. You "need" no more then 5, if you want to have one for every race. You can change jobs, thus making new characters is useless. So in theory, FFXI is cheaper than WoW. In WoW you have to pay $15 a month unless you want to spend a bunch of money at once. FFXI alone is only like $12-13 a month orginally (I forgot which) and $1.00 for every new character. Like I said, the max you should have is 5... but most people only have 2 or 3. So the price fluxuates, and shouldnt get much higher than $15.00, unless you WANT to pay square the extra dough :P

Well, I have a solution for all of you...Go to Guild Wars.

You can have as many characters as you want, there is no monthly fee, its graphics/sounds/community IS GREAT. Plus the PvP/GvG/PvE IS EXCELLENT!

I have played WoW, FFXI, & EQ2, and have one thing to say...Get Guild Wars.

WoW was just horrible. Not horrible in the sense of gameplay or what not, just the game over all just sucked; the community, the unintelligence required to play...All in all this game is for children and the lazy...

FFXI; I love this game, but it's too damn expensive and I ended up finding myself playing more of Tetra Master than I was of FFXI once I hit Lvl 50...Tetra Master, pure greatness in itself no questions asked.

EQ2; Nothing could be worse than this game except for...maybe...most indefinatly...WoW.

I have the right to my own opinions, and you have the right to agree/disagree, so please no flame...This is intended to be just a comment on a random topic I read and would just like to say...Guild Wars baby, Guild Wars!::::28::

Veragon, care to explain why the game is too expensive at $14.99 for 3 character slots? The average price for a MMORPG nowadays is $14.99, and I don't understand why people would need more than 3 character slots. Do you NEED to play 10 characters at one time?

Also, care to explain why EQ2 is junk? You offer no reason as to why it's junk, merely stating it like it's fact. I beg to differ, I enjoy EQ2 immensely for many reasons that I will not list because you didn't list your reasons for denouncing it.

Guild Wars isn't a MMORPG. It's like an improved version of Diablo that focuses on PvP. There's only a handful of instances that you can do over and over again and those are bound to get boring eventually, so the meat of the game is in the PvP.

i agree that the game is designed to take as long as possible...but only if you play it like you want to finish it asap. ..check out my thread. in ffxi general discussion. topic is "final fantasy 11...new era?" read some of my ideas and post on that thread if you would like it better the way i changed it, game hasnt change, but my theory on a different way to play it is getting some good feedback, and id like you, and others to read it as well.

its more of a city vs city (if you ever played ffxi, you know of Bastok, San d'Oria, and Windurst)

i figure if everyone could work together it would be a tottally different game, im so sick of final fantasy 11..so sick of the people..i hear from posts that people are nice and such..but only if your nice to them...and your faking it, because you want to get what you want..all because you need the gil..to get the armor..so you can fight..to get better armor...and blah blah blah...people are as greedy as they get in this game...the way i have it set up...pretty much eliminates the use of gil between members of your own city, and instead gil is made only from citizens of another country comin and buying materials and items their city can't make or produce..why? because land is the best resource..if borders and nation where taken seriously in the game..and economy would actually begin..but instead everyone is secretly playing 1 vs 10000 in a 24/7 world. trying to get the best price or maybe break even...but not my way...check out my other topic..."final fantasy xi......new era?" look for that..and post what you think

You pay extra money for extra chars, because:

FFXI creators let you change jobs(classes) as you wish. Anytime you want to.
And that gives you a LOT!::::02::

you may have a few small points in there but your fogetting one thing.

WoW is fun for a month.  You run out of content because you can solo almost everything in that game.  WoW is the most overrated MMORPG on the market, and no im not a EQ fanboi.

I am currently enjoying FFXI.  The grouping is just how i like it, and it should stay the way it is.

ll online games are time sinks right? Well playing to 42 in EQ2 and 60 in WoW i never felt i achieved anything because as far as i could tell i never saw any real story. Yeah chunks now and then, but FFXI si the only game that has a real story overall in game.

In the end i found i did the same thign in all MMOs

    I raid/HNM in EQ2 WoW FFXI...

    I farm for gear...

    I camp for gear...

I look for a good group, or do things with my guild/LS....

In the end i realized i'd rather do it all with the crowd attracted to FFXI, and i rather get a story along with my monthly fee. Besides after returning to FFXI as a main game i realized how much of a game you miss soloing while LFG because no one wants a PT unless they want to exploit you for gear/drops (unless you are actualyl friends of course). You miss all the good gear, unless you stop lvling...so how is taht different than LFP in jeuno?
