I'm considering playing lotro. I don't want to play the f2p, I'd go for a sub. Which do I purchase in order to get started as well as what would be the best buy? Thanks
Comments
Would need to buy all of the quest packs, MOM, and SOM will be around $100 with the huge mark ups on the prices with the addition of the LOTRO store. It use to be only $30 and as low as $10 at one time for every thing pre F2P there new motto is Free to Charge extra.
Thanks all. I didn't realize it was that much to get into the game. I'll have to think about this now. I appreciate the replies.
I'm still not quite understanding this whole f2p thing vs the sub. I've read the stickys and maybe it's just late in the day and I'm not grasping things.
What would be the best value? Chase down the software or go with f2p and work into that over time?
You don't need to purchase anything anymore, just subscribe (which is now called VIP).
If you subscribe, you get all the quests up to level 50, then you'd have to buy Moria (50-60) and then Mirkwood (60-65)
If you don't subscribe, then you need to buy the quests past the starter areas individiually (by region) up to Moria. They are from $4-8 each region
Honestly, you should play the game free until you hit 20 (as the starter areas are free). If you like it, then subscribe.
That said, I don't see much point in subbing once you enter Moria (if you buy it). I actually never got to use swift travel in any of it (it has to be unlocked by doing quests in each region) which is the main perk of subscribing (other than the free 20 to 50 quests)
R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there
I downloaded the Free client and created a free account.
After a few days I subbed for 1 month. $15.00 for pretty much everything up until MoM if I understand correctly. ViP account.
Bought MoM CE off amazon for $15 after shipping.
So basically I will get the full game, MoM expansion, 2 months Subbed / VIP time, Plus 1000 Turbine points to spend. All for $30 bucks.
IMO thats not bad at all to get into this game.
Or you could just casually play and enjoy the free part of the game for what it is.... Free
^^ this ^^
the only thing i am having problems with is that even with the VIP you still can't get everything opened to you right away, you have to save your Turbine points allowance you get per month
if i am to pay for the VIP sub, then i should be getting the whole thing no?
I am not sure exactly what all you get to be honest. I thought you got the whole original game, and got to buy extra stuff with the TP. If I understood correctly then with a sub you unlock pretty much the whole Original game.
I could be wrong tho.
Either way $30 bucks isnt much to spend on a game for 2 months. Not when it includes all I listed above. Thats just my opinion tho
I know that DDO online is that, you go VIP and you get everything plus a small allowance to buy extra flufs like xp potions and stuff of the like from the store
but i think in LOTRO you only get some unlocks (characters, chat, the basics) but you get a larger Turbine point allowance to buy your quests and areas, but if you want more areas than your allowance can handle that month you have to A) save up till next month or you will have to dish out more cash than your sub (and thats where i have the problem)
15 a month (or 9.99 a month if you sub 3 months at a time) gives you access to everything in the game short of the xpack stuff, which they offer for download. You get 500 points a month for subscribing also, so you can imagine the xpacks being cheaper or your sub being cheaper, either way. I'm a VIP right now and feel I've gotten more than my money's worth.
If you sub in LOTRO you unlimited access to everything pre-moria included. However, just like all current subscribers you still have to buy the MoM and SoM expansion in order to get access to all of the 50+ content so at the very least if you sub you will still have to pay for the xpacks. If you save up your 500 monthly points you will be able to afford the MoM pack after 5 months, less if they have a sale on it. That's not too bad really.
If you download the game for free and then sub for one month for say fifteen bucks, you have access to every single thing that is included in the original Shadows of Angmar game. From there LOTRO had a first expansion which is Mines of Moria that expansion pack introduced us to two new classes and raised the level cap to level 60 and introduced legendary weapons then there was Siege of Mirkwood which raised cap to 65 introduced skirmishes (which there are also free ones added to the original game) and the Mirkwood zone, these are the parts that Turbine stil expects compensation for and is the only content that is not offered for free. But again the expansions are also available on the lotro store and if you are a vip by the time you reach that content you would easily be able to pay for both expansions with points alone which again provides an advantage original subscribers didn't have and as such is as fair as I think one could ask for if you consider that they still need to be able to turn some kind of profit.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I went from Premiuim to VIP, as you cant beat $9.99 a month @ 3 months.
Also, LOTRO is a game worth paying for regardless of how you go about it, i.e. F2P Standard, Prem, or VIP.
Ok not sure if you've even been able to see my last post yet, if you sub to LOTRO (without even purchasing the game) you get access to everything that is available level 1-50 (everything that was originally offered in the game). You don't have to use points to buy anything at all if you choose not to.
The problem with the way you see it is that you're opinion assumes that you will somehow be able to play through the entire game level 1-50 in times ranging in the one to two month range and this I doubt is the curve. Now if you also consider that as you quest you gain turbine points for deeds and if you are leveling 1-50 you will most certainly complete some deeds whether you focus on finishing them all or not significantly more turbine points.
By the time you reach the only content you have to "buy" other than the sub you have no real justification for not being able to afford it unless you are constantly blowing your turbine points in the store on potions and the like (which are still easy to make and are dropped and given as quest rewards) as well.
Add to what all I've said and also consider that a vast majority of the Turbine store content is easily attainable in game through play, there is really no reason to have to spend your points on cosmetic outfits because many are available through skirmishing, potions, weapons, armor, recipes all still available through craft, kinmates, or ah.
I hope that clears some things up a bit for you because I still stand behind the fact that (as I've seen) there is no reason to spend beyond the sub fee for lotro, and that players who would hope to jump on now get to do so to the same level but at a much cheaper price than anyone who played pre f2p which is a good thing for everyone.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Subscribing has a few really specific benefits:
Opening all the content 1-50
Swift travel (easier/faster to get around)
Access to PVP (called PVMP in LOTRO)
Rest XP (200% XP from mob kills)
Able to buy perks with Destiny Points (the same perks can be bought in the store with TP)
500 Turbine Points / month
No caps on Gold, AH selling, chat and Traits
able to quest the Horse Riding skill rather than buy it in the store
Something very important to know is that if you subscribe, even for a month, you remove some of the caps permanently for the toons you played as a subscriber, even after you let the subscription lapse. BTW, your month subscription can be paid for either with cash, or by a 30-day free play code from a boxed game, such as the Moria Expansion. Read carefully before purchasing, however - not all boxes include the code.

I used to go for the 6 month sub. I found that it suited me better.
