its funny how many people miss the initial quest chain and fall back into their grinding ways picking up gleves and thinking "damn, is this it?
People are too used to seeing huge exclamation points and question marks over NPCs heads.
How is it even possible to miss the start quest chain?
/boggle
Well, probably not the very first part, since you just get teleported back to the NPC. Unless you pick the "I'll find my own way" option," I guess. But after the first part, when the NPC sends you to do a leve, it's possible to never go back.
Remember, NPCs don't have anything floating over their heads, in order to show you that you must interact with them. So for someone who's unfamilar with the game, it's possible to miss vital NPCs.
I realize you are a fan and all, but you really need to cool your jets. Lets say it how it is, shall we? We can do that without insulting people....we're all big boys here...well a few are anyway. Now off to my point...
I have never seen more quest handholding in a game...leves in particular. An oversize quest tracker appears at the top of your screen (you can't miss it, trust me)...and just in case you cannot count to three, it keeps track of your "kill x" or "gather x". In addition, your map is marked with a yellowish area...ya know...in case you don't where to go... Just in case you are scratching your head with your empty hand, an arrow appears telling you which direction to move your character...This is not FFXI. My 6 year old was doing quests in this game.
Yes, there is hand-holding in FFXIV.
Edit: Forgot to add...You enter the game on a string of quests. A string of quests you cannot avoid doing...unless you just don't want to progress in the game at all and plan on hanging out in a noobie instance forever. Sure, you can choose not to do quests after the intro....but you can do the same thing in WoW technically too. Quests = progression in FFXIV. This game is not that unique there.
I don't play (though I had the preorder and was going to) so maybe I am missing something here and I was hoping someone who actually played the game would comment on Spikers14 post. Seems like what some beleive makes FF for the elite is that it doesn't give you direction with "exclamations over the npc heads" but this tells me it does just that, just without a floating marker telling you who to talk to. Isn't what he said the same difference. I played FFXI for almost 2 years and though it didn't have what some call "hand holding" it wasn't that hard to find the info on sites.
TLDR: fans should use their knowledge to convince people (why) the game is good, start advertising the pros of the game NOT scare them away with elitist remarks.
No, just no. You don't seem to understand that most of the people really liking this game don't want the "have to be concinced" crowd. If you don't get the game & never played FFXI, you're most likely the type of gamer that needs to stay away from it.
Maybe I'm missing something but why do certain fanbois seem to think the game is 'for the elite' again?
Simply because they are arrogant, elitist and don't like the thought they are playing an inferior game. The sad part is anyone with an active brain cell who has played FF XIV knows it offers next to no challenges, and is actually quite an easy game. So basically its a deluded stance they are taking, as its the last ditch attempt at defending this POS, (i.e. "we are the best MMOs players, so everyone else is talking bull"). Truely sad, as you can't even hold a decent conversation with them.
TLDR: fans should use their knowledge to convince people (why) the game is good, start advertising the pros of the game NOT scare them away with elitist remarks.
I think this constant flow of negative feedbacks in here since closed beta has became very obnoxious to the Final Fantasy fanbase, hence the violent replies they post in those threads created hourly.

I think it's about this.
In any polarized debate you see accusations fly out and about, especially if you have trolls that don't play the game but like to fuel the flames for the sheer fun of it. It isn't only the FFXIV section here, you'll see it on other gamesection forums on mmorpg.com as well.
FFXIV is merely a fave target of the month because it's being released now and because it's different from the current popularly enjoyed batch of themepark MMORPG's.

I've seen little evidence most like this game, even the beta boards were full of complaints. There was even a thread of people cancelling their pre-orders at one point.
Given the coverage across multiple boards FF XIV is by no means being well recevied.
As for these discussions, it works both ways. I sence there's a high percentage of people who have played FF XIV getting tired of seeing fanboi posts stating either: -
1) Its hardcore
2) Its sandbox
3) It doesn't hold you hand
4) Its challenging.
Out of those the closest it comes to is point 3, and only because they didn't bother documenting the game. Once that is out of the way (which doesn't take long), none of the points have the sightest degree of accuracy. FF XIV is a trimmed down themepark MMO.

Just curious, how many people are you referring to? Actual numbers really, 10, 25, 50? Accross 5 message boards you may have what 250 people pitchin a bitch about FFXIV and claiming to have canceled thier pre-order? Ok, lets give you guys the benefit of the doubt and exaggerate actual numbers for you and give you an extra 4 times that value at 1000 people (which we all know is NOT the truth, there are not 1000 different people claiming this on these forums - just count them here and you get less than 50 on MMORPG). But even at our not real number of 1000 who claim they dont like FFXIV and cancelled thier preorder, out of the 200,000 who didn't what is that 0.5%? And yet you and so many others love to claim FFXIV is not being recieved well?? Exactly what are your number? Real numbers and not made up crap? 1000 people can bitch up a strom on the forums and make anything look like trash, but its still only 1000 people, and out of the 200,000+ who like it, its just a drop in the hat and nothign more.
Tell you what, you go back to all these places you claim to have witnessed all this negativity and count the actual individual people complaining and come back here and let us all know. I dont even care if its the same people doing it on every board, I'm going to bet the total number is going to dwarved in comparison to the actualy number of pre-orders that didnt get cancelled.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
Come on it doesn't take much to release most feedback has not been positive. The gap is so huge one doesn't even need to delve into any deep analysis.
The sudden drop FF XIV experienced in various retailer's charts is a prime example. While it did recover strongly in the last two weeks, prior to that it went from being in the top 10 to barely being within their pre-order charts. It recovered when SE published their (so far) fictional patch details, which included the false claim the beta client was 13Gb smaller than retail's.
People on mmorpg.com are negative? no way that never happens...lol. On serious note if anyone is looking for good information and mature discussion go to ffxiv core forums. SE is going to open two new servers so its quite obvious that so far population is growing not going down. The journey has just begun.

Once you're on the leve, sure it lightlights the area of the map for you and points you in the right direction. But that's just leves, there isn't a lot of handholding when it comes to the rest of the stuff.

Comparing APB to FFXIV is where your argument crumble to dust even before it began. Again this is mmorpg.com, half assed information and constant negativity and trolling is expected.

This site is not just for a select group of fans. If fans want to go where only fans post them I'm sure they can figure out where that place is. These forums should be open to all opinions on all games. It's unfortunate for the game that the vast majority of people that play it are so highly dissappointed in it's development but the "constant flow of negative feedback" is useful and appropriate for these forums. People get angry in 2010 when a MMO dev tries to jam something inferior down their throat. Things will improve for the genre in general when enough people put their foot down and refuse to support these kinds of games with time/money.

So basically ignore impartial ones and use a fanbois site instead, as we can protect the game more there.
Ironically I wouldn't find it difficult to believe more people actually found APB more fun, simply that it offered a shorter life due to it basically being a shooter. Hence not worth a subscription.
I've not heard of a single MMO not opening up more servers at launch. No matter if they were good, bad or average.

Sorry but i had to laugh at this statement. Its not about a particular fanboy site. These forums are notorious for its negativity and trolling. Every single MMORPG is hated on this site. there is no balance here neither any maturity when it comes to dscussions. Only good thing about mmorpg.com is its article.
Except for stickies on top no other topic gives any useful info for anyone who is interested in learning more about the game. So for those who want to play game and learn about various aspects of FFXIV, this is the worst forums to be.

Actually you'll probably find the forums here are pretty much stereotypical.
Maybe I'm missing something but why do certain fanbois seem to think the game is 'for the elite' again?
We just seem elite because the people on this board hating on the game who aren't even playing it are so not elite.
I see..... I am not saying the people posting about it are elite, i'm suggesting that they seem to be pointing out that the game in itself appeals to the elite. Which aspects of it make them think this is the case?
So far all I can make out is that it's due to a lack of map or some form of global chat?
I'm not a hater, so don't feel the need to attack the question, i'm genuinely intrigued at such an assumption.
Elite's a pretty srong word and I wouldn't use it, but it's clear the game requires a certain amount of patience. If you come into it expecting (or worse, NEEDING) to be dropped in front of a guy with a glowing exlamation point hovering over his head and then doing 4 quests which tell you exactly what to do, like in WoW, you're going to be a bit frustrated, and if you're like most of the posters on this board, you will proceed to make a thread calling the game a fiery turd bound for total failure.
So it's less guiding then WoW and that's about it? I can imagine that might get pure casuals upset certainly but as someone who played classic UO back in the day and the likes of EVE and Darkfall now it hardly sounds 'elite' or 'extreme' in all fairness.
Personally it doesn't appeal to me purely from the lack of openworld pvp, I like my sandboxes to have a player threat. But the more games that are on the market that have some form of 'challenge' (although I still must admit i'm not sure what form this takes in FF yet as) the better.
I played and really enjoyed Darkfall for about 2 months until I reached the inevitable conclusion that I wasn't prepared to grind for 6 months to get to the point where I could fight back. But the constant threat was definately cool.
It's interesting because FFXIV is kind of like the exact opposite, but in a good way. Instead of being under a constant threat of being attacked, you're under a constant threat of someone helping you. With the way the crafting system, battlewarden and how you can share guildleves (useful when you've run out if you still want to level your battle job) is set up, you really need others in this game if you want to succeed.
Someone else- Confused on this one, if there is an area marked on your map for quests (darkened area), an arrow to point the way to the objective and a concise instruction of what to do...all that is missing is the ! over the head. And this makes the game more....complex? fanboi's ...go figure.
Here I'll clear up your confusion- half the inflamatory negative threads on this board are people frustrated by the tutorial quest, complaining about the UI being unfamiliar, or simply not understanding something- and then calling the game a piece of crap. This thread is one of them.
The game is not complex but there is a learning curve, and it's clear that many mmorpg players that come to this board are simply not able or willing to muster up the patience to get used to something new. The tutorial quest is actually very easy but you have to read the quest text because there is no "arrow" for it. The whole point of the tutorial quest is to send you around town so you get acclimated with it and blindly following an arrow would defeat that purpose.
There are arrows for the guildleve quests but that's because the mobs spawn in different areas. Remember in this game everybody gets their own personal mobs for quests (just another nice feature that avoids the problem of waiting for respawns- one of many great features that everybody overlooks).
Also, on any given day if you play more than an hour a day, you're going to run out of solo guildleves. Then what? You have to figure out what to do yourself. The game isn't going to tell you. Many negative posts and threads I've seen just assume well that's it, you're screwed. But you can share leves, do battlewarden 30 min battles or work on your craft, or join a group and grind on higher level mobs. The reason some people can't find these activities or think to do them is because the game isn't telling them to do them.
The first guy here had it right. It's not more complex than other mmorpgs, there's just very little handholding through the game. Personally I hate being told what to do and enjoy the fact that I can decide how to spend my time. It seems many trolls on this board are unable to play a game anymore without it telling them what to do and when to do it. I don't really blame them too much and more blame WoW for taking away everybody's imagination and free will.
If you "grew up" mmorpg-wise with WoW, this game is going to seem confusing at first. You can either react in resentment as so many trolls have or you can take a breath and realize that you're not stupid, it's just a brand new game and a brand new way of doing things. And it's really fun if you give it a chance.
Yeah I expected nothing less that what I got when I asked someone on these forums to buck up and put some facts to thier claims. Seriously sad. Oh well, I guess if everyone here is so stupid that they believe the drivel coming out of so many negative, broad sweeping, assumptions and....
'I have seen it, there are so many of them!'
'really? how many are there?'
'more than can be refuted by you, it must be true because I said so!'
'yeah, but really how many are there? 'cause ya know, I actually spent the last hour counting thier names and I got 47 haters'
'Lies! the majority of everyone thinks this game is bad, I know it, I have seen it'
'hmm yeah, but how many again??
'your just a fanboi, you know nothing!'
EDIT: And ya know what, I'm sitting here playing in the head start of this game everyone appearntly hates, and I'm seeing more people logged in right now than I did during open beta. Everyone hates this game?? Really?? And its not even at regular launch date yet and its already got this big of an in-game turnout.

I have to agree with this.
Compared to other general game/MMORPG forums/sites, mmorpg.com forums seem to have a larger-than-common amount of negativity, bile and flame rants going around than other sortlike sites. It isn't however only when it comes to FFXIV, my experiences are that it's rather over the whole line with all game section forums here.
