I love how people are bashing the game that have not eve played retail. I can tell you this much. The leve timer was shortened, there is hardware mouse support, the Ui lag is gone, u have reached lvl 12 phys, 10 pug, 7 bs, 8 leather work and 5 armor, no fatigue. Oh and when I started yesterday with leves, they reset today. So all the haters can hate, the game will be a succuss and all the crap y'all you can do wont make it otherwise
I am playing retail as we speak. It is running in the background. I have played more than 15 MAJOR mmos.. this one is by far the worst one in terms of both informational resources and game interaction (both social and UI) that I have ever played. I honestly have no idea what I am doing half of the time because I never played FFXI and I have never played a game that doesn't let you simply chat with others. This game needs some help or it is going the way of the dodo... period. I can handle some analytical challenge. What I can't handle is not being able to easily ask anyone how to get started. What I can't handle is how to equip something because I don't have the points to equip it even though I have been leveling it the whole time. This game is backwards and confusing. Torture yourselves all you want but it won't change the facts. People who play this game wan't to A. be tortured or B. are used to it from FFXI. ( I am guessing it was just as bad).
As much As I want to defend FFXIV, I have to agree that the current UI is terribad, EVERYONE knows its terribad (better than it used to be in alpha-beta lulz). Alot of steps that need to be fixed with the inventory and equipping and maybe an easier Macro setting (Still better than FFXI...On the exception of player created Macros). An earlier developer post somewhere stated that it was number 2 on their Todo list... After fixing all of the current bugs and crashes that prevent people from playing. As for a launch it is much smoother than most launches ive seen these past years and we can expect the game to become smoother or the community to become tighter as the game progresses. SE has proven that with FFXI
Another problem you stated is in conjuction with game interaction and equipment. You cannot equip second slot weapons (or some cases armor) if they are from different classes than your current weapon. Like if you have the Fishing rod in the main hand, you cannot equip a scythe, Botanist's Secondary. it will give you the stupid "Lack of points" excuse...Which means nothing. Darn it SE . If you gave a specific example i could try to help you...but alas... :P
as for "not knowing what to do" Im going to assume you skipped through the NPC and story dialogue. If not you can search for the wiki to get you back into motion. FFXI was bad at telling you what to do, 99% of the time you had to use the wiki to figure out what you had to do next...But the game was still good... FFXIV is much better in showing you the next step in comparison to FFXI, however It will never turn into something like WoW where it will point you in the direction and perhaps auto-move you. There will always have to be some figuring out on the player's part...Whether it be through wiki or asking at the market/crystals/GuildLeve counters.
As for Chatting, you have a chat box. and there is the /shout command. you can also ask for help next to Aetherite Crystals, they are usually covered by 50+ people standing there activating guildleves. Im going to assume Friend's list will be coming soon. Also, Linkshells if you are feeling exeedingly lonely.
FFXI has one of the best communities ive ever seen in an MMO, Im pretty sure FFXIV will turn out to be the same once the ones that want to have their hands held or expect a perfect game at launch get weeded out.
As for you. I hope you figure out the pattern/style of the game before you give up Take care.
Yeah...this game is very painful to play. Square Enix's attempt to be like all the other MMO's has failed. What made their last MMO stand out (FFXI) was that it was nothing like the other online games out there. The quests in XIV are boring and very frustrating. Theres going to be a lot of disappointed people out there and of course I am one of them.

sorry but the name alone will prevent that from happening. And im not tortured by playing, im enjoying it.

And whats so hard about chatting? You hit enter, you type and you hit enter again. Big deal?
Now i'll admit, the "this target is already engadged" bug is annoying, but im sure it will be fixed. Remember, tweaks be a comming, its 3 days into the unofficial release.
I am sure am glad a few people on a forum cant have an impact on a major mmo
on a side note, i cant wait to see how long it takes lotr:O to merge servers and then shut down
If you haven't figured out how to get the camera to follow you. I think its you that has the problems. May I suggest a simple game like tic tac to for you to play? I mean, you won't be any good at it, but I think you have the potential the grasp the potential and the UI is easy.
