Thinking of buying and getting into AoC

I am seruously done playing WoW (not that it is a bad game)

I played Aion for a bit until the launcher went all mad on me. (Whenever I exit the launcher I have to repair the program to play Aion and one day the problem didnt fix with repair and there was no way playing it unless I redownload and reinstall the game which will take me atleast 10hours.)

so I stopped, and then I read a thread talking about this game AoC and the author was telling me that female can go topless. XD

Plus I read alot of reviews and so far there werent many complaints about it, so I ask you guys...

1. How is the community?

2. How is the map? Is the map wide open field like WoW or are there loading from zone to zone?

3. I understand that it would be hard to compare this game with WoW, but still if you were to compare the gameplay, how would you describe it? (Your personal oppinions plz, I am not that picky and I like variaties of gameplays so feel free to express yourself.)

4. Charater movements? (I played some cheap mmos where the character movementswere stiif and slow)

Plz, express everthing you can, thank you.

    1) comunity varys from server to server but you'll get all sorts of people.

2)the original AoC was very instanced. the maps were relatively small and the loading times a bit too long. Rotgs(expansion) added much larger more open ended maps but there is still a fare share of loading screens. it never quite feels like an open world, but then again neither did Aion. this was always one of the major dowsides of AoC.

    3) AoC has a much more complex and difficult combat system than WoW or Aion. there are 2 types of modes in AoC. casters=easy mode but a bit boring, and melee=hard mode but very fun (fatalities anyone?).

the learning courve for melee is steep and pvp can be really frustrating without A LOT of practice and the right mouse and keyboard. directional hits, combos, combo cooldowns, facing, strafing, directional shielding, double tapping, knockbacks, cc, cc cooldowns, deminishing returns, immunities, cones of damage, weappon switching, fatalities, cone healing and many other combat mechanics make this game much harder to master then WoW especially in pvp. wile the basic gameplay is the same with hot bars and target portraits and so on to be succesfull in pvp a lot of practice is required. i should say that combo difficulty has been dumbed way down since the new expansion and now many clasess are much easier to play than back in the day. AoC still has the most engaging and complex combat i'v come accros yet. if you take the time to learn it you will enjoy it.

    4) you either love it or hate it. it's not quite as fluid as WoW movement but it's still pretty smooth. i highly suggest learning to move only with your mouse if you are going to play a melee char. for casters.....well you can play those blind folded eating a sandwich.

in summary. if you have never played this game you are missing out on one of the best mmos out to date. if you have a rig that can handle the graphycs this game is stunning (keeping in mind that it's a low fantasy setting). the combat is fun and very engaging, the story is brutaly awesome, and the sound is amazing. wile the pvp can be quite frustrating, gear based, and lop sided the pve in this game is on par with all the best games out there.

    Thank you for your reply.

If Im missing out one of the good newest mmos then I might as well try it cuz its only $9.99 at Game Stop.

Is the leveling casual? I mean I heard ppl get flunked at school or work becuz of playing WoW too much but never heard of ppl losing their life becuz of AoC.

I see that the lelvel cap is 80 and thats a very high level to reach...

  • ToolfanToolfan Member UncommonPosts: 80

Age of Conan has probably the worst community in an mmo I ever played. A bunch of virgin teenagers and 40 year old with god complexes just because they had more time on their hands to grind to pvp lvl 10 gear and are unCCable or almost invulnerable to any dmg unless of course you're lvl 10.

These man boys are the ones who chased players from the game by camping White Sand all the way until they reach pvp  lvl 3.....which is really a testament to how much freetime they have.

The PVE in this game is outstanding but not fully appreciated due to exploits and gear looking exactly the same throughout all the tiers.

The best time a newcomer can have in this game is actually leveling to 80 and a few quests and dungeons after 80. If you're a casual gamer you'll soon find out you're wasting your time playing this game and you have a life to live.

  • JakdstripperJakdstripper Member RarePosts: 2,410

yes at 10$ for the game you really can't go wrong, mind you that's "vanilla" AoC and not Rotgs. either way you'll figure out pretty quick if you like the game or not., and also if you computer can handle the high graphics.

since the expansion (Rise of the God Slayer) they implemented offline levelling so it really doesnt get any easier than that. as far as i can remember you get 1 free level for every 4 days of subsrcibed time pluss you can get double xp potions and rested xp (much like WoW). those free levels can be added to any of your characters as long as they are level 30+. it really doesn't get any easier to level, you can basicly level alts without ever playing them. or level your main to 30 and then just add the free levels as you get them.

it's actually really good since the majority of players are high levels and it can be a bit empty in the lower/mid zones. i still encourage you not to skip any zones because they are truly beautifull and very fun, but if you just hate questing/levelling there is an alternative.  i would like to add that the majority of players these days are busy in the expansion zones but there are still guilds that run old world raids every so often.

wile some people love AoC's pvp i would reccomand this game more as a PVE game. pvp is extremely geared based, with the fotm clasess rolling everyone, and premades completely owning mini games. sieges have never worked properly and they are mostly a complete lag fest. wile 1 vs 1 can be fun AoC pvp can be very frustrating if you dont have a computer that runs the game smooth as butter. this of course is on top of the skill and knowledge required to pvp.

i highly suggest levelling on a PVE serve wile you are learning the ropes. pvp servers can be brutal with vetts ganking nubes constantly in starting zones. with the free "offline" levels you can always just make a char on a pvp server later, or just tranfer your main for 25$.

i also highly suggest going to AoCuibuilder.com and downloading a custom UI. nobody uses the in game UI, cause it's just horrible.

    Some tips from a player:

    1. Beginner server= PvE Server - You can do both PvE & PvP here

Experienced player or really really interested in PvP = PvP server (Caution!)

    2. Community is as other say, vary, but find yourself a guild, and it solves alot!

    3. Map is answered mostly, its zoned and the size vary from smallest in Tortage to biggest in expansion.

    4. Gameplay depends on class choice alot, as casters are mostly like WOW in some way or another, with a few exceptions ofc. Meelee classes are where the fun and challenge lies in this title. I love a Bear Shaman myself, hard to begin with, but grows powerful lvl 40+

    5. Spend some time tweaking for max performance of system if your lacking GPU power.

    6. Take it easy, don`t rush to lvl 80, and enjoy the views! :)

The more I play this game the more it reveals its true value as a well done PVE MMO. Playing on Set PVE I haven't found the community at large to be anything but good company.  Most seem to be content to solo through the games' questing, but the times I have grouped we have always been cooperative and friendly. I have had some of my best times grouping up with total strangers.

Grouping up for the quests in the lower levels can be a challenge because the population of lower lvl players is not high. In my guild most of the players are lvl 80 and have been for sometime. But they are willing to assist low lvl players if you are having trouble with some tough mobs. Really a laid back friendly bunch, and a fountain of information about every aspect of the game.

I haven't leveled to 80 yet so I dunno what the end game is like, but the game leading up to it is pretty good fun questing and grinding. The environments are really super, not totally open world, but the zones are large and so well detailed they are fun to be in. Cities, mountains, villages, beautiful vistas, rivers and valleys --- it is all rendered so well.

As a melee character the combat is pretty exciting. In many MMOs, and RPGs in general, the combat isn't always that great, but in AoC it is one of the high points of the gameplay. Which is a good thing because you spend much of the time fighting!

Motion quality is another example of AoC's  attention to detail. All movements of your character and NPCs are fluid and life like, and this only adds to the quality of combat. The horse and rider animations are the best I have seen in any video game. You gotta see it to believe it! But you can't get a horse until lvl 40.

The music score is also top notch. It is all very fitting to the Conan universe, beautiful really. Can you imagine orchestrated music while you are going merrily along  lopping off limbs and heads with a broad ax?

Overall I think Conan is a great game if you ready for some gritty low fantasy action. The game stays true to the source material very well and if you are a fan of Howard's Conan stories you will appreciate AoC even more.

For a $10 purchase you will enjoy the beginning stages of AOC a lot. Tortage is very lush and visually amazing. If you have a solid PC you will really enjoy the game for the eye candy.

Getting past Tortage you will want to join a guild and find others to group with. This may be hard for a lot of newer players because the game is 2 years old and there is not a huge surge of new blood rushing in. There will still be some vets out there to group with on one of their many alts and you will find most group encounters quite enjoyable. Leveling up to 80 doesn't take as long as you might think, the real challenge is going to the right places at the right levels. You can find most of the level range details on your main map, but its best to ask people in game where to go and what quests to grab. Finding a guild or veteran player will save you a lot of time and headaches.

For starting off I'd suggest a PVE server since their populations are generally a lot higher than the PVP servers. You can still find PVP on the PVE servers, you just wont have the same open world PVP except for select zones.

As others have stated, PVP is gear dependant and you will need to start gathering that if that is your focus in game. If you really want to get to pvp 10 in a hurry, join a guild that holds down Cimmerian End (Bori shrines). The Bori shrines are the gayest form of pvp in the game, and you basically never have to kill anything. You just farm rocks and sacrifice it to the pvp god (seriously retarded concept).

PVP in AOC has really not changed since game launch. The fighting itself is dynamic and pretty fun but the content to pvp in is stale and old.

AOC is truely becoming a PVE game with PVP as an afterthought.

Raiding is pretty cool and there are some very interesting instances throughout the game. If you join a guild with 99% of the content on farm status, you will find yourself raiding a lot.

The new expansion zones are beautiful, but you will be grinding till your eyes bleed to get the gear your really want. Some careful planning will save you heaps of time in the expansion.

I will offer a word of warning. Most of the vet players in this game are sick of the direction Funcom has taken with it and are leaving. As soon as majority of subs run out, the servers will start to empty. Some of the reasons they are leaving is due to game breaking exploits that allow people to max their aa trees in a day. Funcom is working on fixing it, but the damage has already been done. One year of aa points gathered in one day... pretty awful (and no, I'm not refering to yag). PVP has become a joke and some pvp servers are becoming empty. Devs that were working on AOC have been sent to work on The Secret World, so you've got more junior devs keeping it running or fixing issues. Sieges have been broken since launch and are not happening on all servers. Lag is still causing problems and sometimes entire raid groups will crash to desktop while raiding higher end dungeons.

In closing, if you are looking for something to play for a few months that will keep you busy, by all means purchase AOC and enjoy the eye candy... hopefully by the time you hit 80 and have explored a lot of content, Funcom will have fixed some of the issues.

It has little going for it.

It did have potential but much like EQ2, Vanguard, and Warhammer it will not be realized.

I feel the exact opposite.  Personally, I've been enjoying the game greatly for the past 6-months.  It's the only MMO worth subscribing to atm in my opinion.  Certainly not the end-all, be-all, but definitely worthwhile until something better comes along.

Well am on Aqualonia server pvp-rp

it's a Medium one i would recomend going on Crum for PVE or Fury if u don't Mind ganking and wna do PVE as well both are full and active

     1.How is the community?

tbh it's Great as i see it ur semply Welcome Any where u go New ppl are taken care off and 80 the lvl cap ppl just bosst for help any time u ask for it at global

    2. How is the map? Is the map wide open field like WoW or are there loading from zone to zone?

Ther's loading still the Zones are quite larg and when i play this game i really think it's much better than  what ppl think about it out ther b4 they even try it out :).

    3. I understand that it would be hard to compare this game with WoW, but still if you were to compare the gameplay, how would you describe it? (Your personal oppinions plz, I am not that picky and I like variaties of gameplays so feel free to express yourself.)

i think this game is Great ..... if u wna compar it to wow it's like this ... wow easy .. this one hard and i mean it Doungns need much tactic to do u need to play ur roll right ... it's much more detaled than wow Zons chars everything

wow is more fantasy stuff funy in a way

AOC is Brutal relastic game with mature content

    1. Community is decent to be honest

    2. Zones and instances and loading maps everywhere not even close to seemless word.

    3. Best combat in the MMO genre bar none. Takes a while to get used to but its awesome

    4. Character animation is fantastic too.

    Decent PVE.

PVP sucks the wazoo. From only one map being used in the instance pvp games and its a dull map, to sieges busted still

WoW's crafting is absolutly stellar, deep and perfect compared to AOC crafting and gathering system. I kid you not on this. First you cant even craft until lvl 40 and then every single thing you craft is useless until you max it out. And thats super tedious.

In short what bothered me about AOC was it just had an OK PVE and amazing combat. but if you ever wanted to anything else its horrible. Thats why I like WoW over this, because of the options you can do. You can fish, take up crafting, enter pvp arenas and there all adequatly done. And the world seems alive. With the abaility to craft an item anywhere anytime, no one ever goes and hangs out int he cities, thee are auction houses littered through out the the game so theres no centreal meeting point so the game always feels sparse to me.

I really enjoy this game, but after awhile you get tired of running the same thing with NOTHING else to do. If there fixed sieges and added some cooler challege maps I would proabbly come back.

as long as you stick to pve servers the community is good, if you start on Tyranny server tho....its THE WORST community hands down. there is just no comparison honestly, i have never seen a worse community in any other game EVER. seriously they make Barens chat on its worst day, look like Barney's super happy fun time. because the game is rated like 18+ for adults or what ever they're allowed to say what ever they want without so much as warnings. i'm not talking just swearing, i mean some down right vulgar, racist things was the norm.

after i got sick of Tyranny's childish nonsense, i went around and checked out Cimmeria the PVP RP server(second highest pop. of the pvp servers). i'm deffinitly not an RPer but when i first joined Cimmeria i couldn't get over how good the commmunity was. it was honestly one of the best communities i ever experienced of any game including PVE games. i had just started over there. then they started doing the free transfers and it started going down hill on that server :/ not sure if the server straightened out since then i ended up giving up on it and transfered to a PVE server.

just had to atleast warn you about the community, it does vary from server to server tho as i said.just try each out ask simple questions get a rough idea of how they are without having to level up over and over on each to see. like Tyranny pretty much anything you say or ask the answer is always without fail "your mom" or worse.

the game is fun and you'll deffinitly get your money's worth out of it specially since you said its only $10 now.teh classes are fun and have some originality to them. my favorite is the Herald of Xotli, melee class honesly even tho they class it as a caster. cloth wearing melee that uses 2 hander edge weapons (swords axes) turns into a demon for really nice temp buff. they do have some nukes but most are very close range like melee close. very fun class to play i deffinitly recomend it dispite the childish community on Tyranny.

  • catlanacatlana Member Posts: 1,677

I have found the game to be a lot of fun since I returned. That being said nothing is perfect. The community varies widely by server. The pvp servers tend to have a ton of trash talking. I found my home on Wiccana which is a pve server.

  • HersaintHersaint Member UncommonPosts: 366

AoC is PvE. PvP is just plain bad. Huge grind for gear. Instanced gives feeling of close quarters. THe different classes are engaging. The deathblows are fun as well as the blood and mature themes. Community is lacking the maturity needed for the mature themes though. PvP server is good for stealthies so you can simply gank the rest of the classes. Crafting is an afterthought and really obsolete. I think if you are looking for PvE raiding, grinding for gear, solo storyline its passable.

I'm not currently playing any mmo atm but in my opinion AoC, FFXI, and WoW are the best MMOs out there atm. I'm patiently waiting for GW2. It was actually pretty satisfying to kill things in AoC. AoC is like a God of War MMO (hmm great suggestion for a new mmo..think ill get people's ideas). Mobs don't just fall to the ground after being defeated. You end up ripping their heads off or slashing their throats etc etc....with added blood splatter on the screen.

I started out on Tyranny without knowing about the server. I normally don't play on pvp servers. Why care about the community on a pvp server? A bad community on a pvp server just fuels my desire to kill them more. If there were nice people on there I would possibly have second thoughts about ganking someone.

I am currently downloading the free trial. I went into the store to see about actually buying the game and found out that I cannot unless I have a cell phone... unless I want to wait for a boxed set to be delivered here - not having a car going to buy a copy is challengining here.

Can I just finish the dl and then update or will I still need a cell phone to buy the game?  I have played this in the past and liked it but the cell phone thing is a killer cause i refuse to buy one.

    Currently bored with MMO's.

I started playing AoC via the free trial. I liked that so I went ahead and subed. As part of the subscribing process I was to receive some kind of code over my cell phone. Long story short, I never received said code. I have a working cell phone and I sumitted the info Funcom asked for, but the code never arrived. I had to contact customer support to get my account activated. It took a couple of days to get a reply to my email, but once I got in contact with a live person I was up and running right away.

So I never did get activated through my cell phone, I don't think you really need one to subscribe, but you may have to go through customer support to activate your account, at least I did.

I was able to renew my old account after downloading the trial and buying the expansion... which was odd because it was frozen, then went to pending for an hour and then Presto change-o I was a paying customer.  Oddly enough my lvl 50 Demonlogist seems to be now a 6th level and my 30 Heralsd is now lvl 13.  Not sure what is up with that.  Tried playing my Herald but I think I will start a new toon and remember how to play first.  Been awhile.  thanks for your story, though.
